Huawei P20 Pro review

12 April 2018
Huawei was among the front-runners in the dual-camera race with the P9 and then the Mate 10, so who better to take things to the next level? The Huawei P20 Pro one-ups all current major players and comes with three cameras on its back, each unique in its own right.

It's quite incredible that DxOMark gave this phone 109 mark.. with such overprocessed image, vignetting and purple fringing. The only chance to justify it is thinking that gsmarena has got a defective unit or an older FW. Looking at the sample images with sky at dxomark, the blue sky does not look to be as saturated as that on gsmarena.. I think those are two complete different FW and gsmarena should investigate why such a big difference.

All that hype over 3 cameras that aren't even significantly better than what's already out there. And that joke of an endurance for a 4000mah battery. Nothing to see here.

Tann Hauser, 12 Apr 2018I dont know people, except zoom shot quality and good portr... moreExcept P20 Pro managed to produce photos as detailed and clean as S9+ but with its dynamic range reaching to Pixel 2 level. And zoom still works in low-light unlike S9 or iPhone X, so I think it is fair to say that P20 Pro is a significant inprovement over last year's high ends in terms of camera performance. At least it's not like Samsung who only added variable lens to "reimagine" the camera experience or Sony who barely changed anything from last generation for camera.

Anonymous, 12 Apr 2018Cant believe some ppl here think P20p uses all 3 cams same ... moreThey did though, and that's why zoomed images still look great at night. Without the support from the main sensor, that tiny 8MP sensor would be able to produce nothing but noise above the iso of 200 and so on, but so far it doesn't seem to be bad at all.

Cant believe some ppl here think P20p uses all 3 cams same time.

Impossible for 2 cameras with different focal length work together.
These two samples cant be merged.

You can merge rgb and monochrome, not wide + telephoto

Anonymous, 12 Apr 2018It's also inappropriate that gsmarena writes that Huawei's ... moreGoogle Pixel 2 takes many frames with short shutter speeds (but higher ISO setting), so it's not as hard to fix ghosting. The P20 Pro takes many frames at long shutter speeds - the whole photo taking process lasts a few seconds - hence it can in some cases be nearly impossible to remove some of the ghosting.

Isn't the audio adapter actually a Digital to Analog converter and headphone amp in a compact size?
It should therefor be possible to get a better adaptor from some other maker. Any USB-C to 3.5mm should work... Or a proper headphone amp that is class compliant (probably with some other type of USB plug).

The audio output tests, should perhaps be moved from the review, to a separate category, so that users can find the best adaptors.
Built in audio outputs should still be included.

Yes huawei use same methode as the pixel hdr+ and yes its slower because its use 3 sensor and combine them as well at the same time so its could even be 3 times slower and its would still be good.

                    Ah hater...

LG Superfan, 12 Apr 2018I think you forgot to open your eyes check out the night mo... morefound one shot with similar fov as v30(16mp) and pattern visible in v30 was deformed in p20pro(40mp), in daylight. If its about low light, also found one of xz2 with same fov, same pattern was clear and good in in it, while in p20pro was deformed, with night mode not even visible. Less noise but less detail. You can do the same setting lover resolution in other phone. Also xperia uses one sensor without ois, p20pro uses at least 2 and with brighter aperture and ois. In test shots it clearly loses, seems in real shots too. Monochrome camera alone perform the best, not that I would go back to monochome when taking shots.

They are good at posting high numbers in artificial benchmarks. I think many of you will agree with me on that, and this is where Huawei flagships beats the competition their battery enduarance and perfomance will always get better with long time usage.

The video quality is a dealbreaker for me. The camera is overhyped, and it is safe to assume that 50% of the entire smartphone audience in the world does not need good low light capabilities at the expense of jerky and poor video quality. Combine that with a previous gen chipset and no slo-mo ability , and we begin to see that the P20 Pro is not such a mighty innovation after all.

Dxomark put the p20 pro on top of any high end smartphones with an overall score of 109. S9 Plus scores 99 points.

Long story short, this is a great phone... but the Mate 20 Pro is gonna be even better. Hehehe

Anonymous, 12 Apr 2018A phone with OIS can do it, but you need to set the shutter... moreYes u can, but have to use tripod to avoid blurriness. P20 pro 4 seconds can be achieve good results with HANDHELD, where no other phones can. Dont u still get it?

I dont know people, except zoom shot quality and good portrait mode, this tripple camera setup is nothing that impressive standing out in stills, and certainly not in video.
Yea, you get superbright lowlight 10mpx shots with that looong exposure, but its a big smudge with no detail or sharpness, and its not looking like lowlight anymore, some nightshots there look actually like a dawn or evening shot, and it should look like its actually night...or not?
Without AI, full res nightshots look just like the rest.
But it you want flag video quality too...its just not that good.
Overall Good, but A bit overhyped camera setup in my opinion.
And then there is the last year SoC inside for the top price too.
                                    Just my 5.3 cents...

They did not deny OIS, but at the event they also did not mention it , except the telephoto lens.

Proof them that the AI learn system really works and battery life can be improve more than the battery lab test did. Lol.
