Nokia12, 23 Apr 2018I was going to mention 650/652 in my previous post but acci... moreHi, thanks for the reply. Some interesting information there, although I am not sure if I can agree with all of it.
I tend to exclude the screen type factor because OLED is not always more efficient, but depending on the contents. OLED is more efficient when it displays largely black color, while LCD is more efficient when it displays largely white color. So, I just put more emphasis on the screen size and screen resolution. That's just me though. Cmiiw
I know the SD650 only has two big A72 cores and four (not six) small A53 cores. It also runs them at lower maximum speed, compared with SD660. The GPU parts are different as you just mentioned.
But here's a question: when doing web browsing or video playback routine (those screen on tests), do these chipsets actually run at maximum clock speed most of the time?
Since the higher the clock speed the higher the power draw, I can imagine the SD660 draws lotsa power when running at maximum. Otherwise, when running at the same speed that is just moderate, the newer smaller process node chip should have the advantage, thus drawing less power.
And lest we forget, 28 nm to 14 nm is a pretty big jump, skipping the 20 nm.
Anyway, there are other factors that may come into play here that we haven't touched upon.
However I can't be sure without AnandTech's level of in-depth tests.
At the end of the day, according to GSMArena test, I take the Nokia's score as just good but it could have been better optimized. It got beaten by RN3 with SD650 and A9 (2016) with SD652 even more.
Cheers.

AnonD-752244, 23 Apr 2018I think what people are pissed about this phone in general ... morePeople tend to go outside where it sometimes rains and snows. If you are lucky even an unprotected phone will survive, but relying on that is a bad idea. On the other hand, if you have a protected phone you don't have to care anymore. You even can use your phone in the rain, taking photos and videos.
I've been using waterproof phones since 2014 and that's the best feature added to smartphones in the last five years. The only time I made a mistake of buying a non-waterproof phone it lasted less than an year before dying a predictable death under a tropical downpour.
As for the size, Nokia lacks a small/medium phone in its middle-end or high-end range. They already have a large lower-middle-end phone (Nokia 6), it would make much more sense to make Nokia 7 closer to S8/S9 in size, if not to Sony's Compact series.

The battery on this phone is below expectations, but could fixed with a software update, which this phone will get for at least 3 years

brandstifter, 23 Apr 2018Samsung uses water protection for midrange, Sony have been ... moreThat person whomever he/it/she is doesn't know that smartphones ranges were dictated by their SoC and not the features that it has. It's a general knowledge that everyone should know . Let us say that you have a company and you made a phone with features like Galaxy S9 with SD450 SoC. You can declare it as "flagship" of your own company but in general public you just released a low-end phone. It will be significantly slower than a competition that has a SD845 flagship SoC.

FinnishInquisition, 23 Apr 2018OP5T and Mi 6 were significantly more expensive at the time... moreThat kind of logic is wayy behind. Look at the NOW perspective and NOT the PAST. The OP5 and Mi6 were old flagships and has gone down in price. Mi6's price in the market is now in the new 2018 midrange territory while the OP5 has gone down a bit but much higher than the Mi6. Now Nokia 7 Plus' price is higher than Mi6 but just a bit lower than the OP5. It's place (in terms of price) is between two flagships that have SD835, 6GB RAM and UFS storages while only having the midrange 660 (SoC) and (probably) only having an EMMC storage. It's not that hard to compare these three especially using GSMArena's compare tool. I don't see this Nokia 7 Plus selling in the places where Huawei, Oneplus, and Xiaomi were present. It's only chance is when these 3 were totally absent or when the shipping tax were very bloated.

AnonD-752244, 23 Apr 2018I think what people are pissed about this phone in general ... more"Forget IP54/IP67, no one in routine jumps into a pool of water with smartphone in their pockets."
My friend, your reasoning is imaginary and impractical. Meanwhile you forget about rains. Having IP54/67 will certainly eliminates any concern on using a phone under rain. As I said before, it is an absolute must unless you don't leave a building. A phone constantly used outdoors will need the most durability features it can have, one of them is IP54/67.

AnonD-733422, 23 Apr 2018As I said before 2 months- Xiaomi Mi note 3 is much better ... moreThe main problem is Xiaomi Mi Note 3 is hard to find. Even in my country Indonesia, which is located in Asia (Xiaomi's main market), it is not being sold officially, it's only buyable via black market. Buying via black market like this is more risky. Meanwhile, Nokia's phones, including Nokia 7 plus, are international; they have been granted official permission to be sold here and now are just waiting to launch officially. Also, MIUI isn't everyone's cup of tea, proven by Xiaomi Mi A1's success.

I think what people are pissed about this phone in general is its price tag, and I kind of agree. Specs have given a new way how people look at smartphones and judge them. For the specs, it seems a 300 EUR price would have been much more appropriate and acceptable to a bigger population.
However, one can also see the negatives being pointed out for this phone. Most commonly been:
1. No IP54/67 protection
2. Too big to hold
3. Battery not living upto expectations, considering its size
Every one is entitled to their opinion, however, with today's smartphones, I think most important thing is performance and how snappy is it, considering apps are demanding more and more each day. My Lenovo P70 always was smooth for around first 1.5 year, running facebook, instagram, messenger without problems. Lately, it started to struggle with facebook installed, instagram wouldn't be that snappy anymore. A phone that is able to fight off the app demands is the right phone. Forget IP54/IP67, no one in routine jumps into a pool of water with smartphone in their pockets. My younger brother once put the good old Nokia 6230i into a glass of water, I kept it in sunlight for a day and bingo, it worked as if nothing happened. The smartphones will get bigger, because people ask for it.
The battery performance is not blowing away others, because its a 6" LCD screen - hardly efficient. Why it has LCD is another discussion. On standby this phone performs exceptionally well, it is screen on all the time that is poor result (been using it for couple of days already, can confirm this)

LLL, 23 Apr 2018I just rechecked Xiaomi Redmi Note 3's battery test results... moreI was going to mention 650/652 in my previous post but accidently hit submit button. anyways ..
650 uses only 2 cortex a72 cores rest 6 being a53 so it isn't a fair comparison ..
Fair comparison would be SD 652.. Which uses 4xa72 .
Like I mentioned before that you can "either" get efficiency at same ""clock speed"" OR you can get more performance at same power level ..
So SD 652 example is galaxy a9 2016 .. with 4000 mah battery it gets 13.5 hours or so in web browsing but endurance and other numbers are fantastic mainly because of using super amoled that has much lower power consumption..
In SD 652 a72 clocked at 1.8ghz and a53 at 1.4 ghz and gpu is at 600mhz .. SD 660 at similar clocks would have been way more efficient but manufacturer has gone for more performance instead of effeciency .. And increased clock speed of a73 to 2.2ghz (23% more )and a53 to 1.85ghz( 28% more ) and gpu to 850 mhz ( 41% more ) .. For roughly similar power draw..
As a result ( some additional performance improvement because of using a73 vs a72 ) it gets big improvement in performance ( check benchmarks ) but power consumption remains roughly same or marginally higher
In antutu v6 from Android central benchmarks SD 653 - 80k and SD 660 -120k .. Gpu alone is 50% faster here check more benchmarks
Some other example of SD 660 based phones are oppo r11 and r15 pro .. R15 pro got 10 hours in web browsing with super amoled but 3400 mah battery ...

Locked bootloader is the least of my concerns. However, it would make the phone more futureproof, allowing enthusiasts to keep it up to date even when the manufacturer abandons it.
Now please explain me, how would waterproofing, smaller size and bootloader unlock turn it into a flagship.

I like Nokia's approach, but waterproofing is a must for everyone who tends to get out of basement/school/office, and the size is uncomfortable. If it was smaller and had water protection (and, ideally, an unlocked bootloader), it would be an awesome phone.

DroidBoye, 23 Apr 2018Yes, OP5T is a much better choice. People should use GSMAre... moreOP5T and Mi 6 were significantly more expensive at the time of release. If you wait a year, the Nokia 7 Plus will also have fallen in price. They're not comparable.
Besides, part of the price of the Nokia are the 3 years of guaranteed updates that you definitely don't get with OnePlus and absolutely not with Xiaomi. You can actually buy the Nokia 7 Plus in a year and still have a good 2 years of Android updates remaining.

Bdhdhd, 23 Apr 2018Umm how about one plus 5tYes, OP5T is a much better choice. People should use GSMArena's compare tools and see that this Nokia 7 Plus should be priced cheaper that what it should be. Even the Mi6 could beat this no problem in overall utility for the phone. Never buy midrange when you can have flagships at similar or much lower price.

I just rechecked Xiaomi Redmi Note 3's battery test results. For a 5.5" Full HD device running SD650 (built on 28 nm process node) and powered by 4050 mAh battery, it scored 93 hours battery life (21 hours talk time, almost 13 hours web browsing, and almost 13 hours video playback).
Nokia 7 Plus, with just 6% smaller battery and slightly taller screen but running a chip built on 14 nm process node and pure Android Oreo, could have been better. Again, what gives?

anon4321, 23 Apr 2018These new chips are nowhere near as efficient as manufactur... moreNo, they mention correct specs .. When they say generally this chip is xx % more efficient then it is in comparison to similar chip at ""similar clockspeed" of last gen..
SD 435 (28nm ) in redmi 4 gets 11.5 hour something in web browsing , and SD 625 (14nm ) in redmi note 4 gets
Around 17 hours on web browsing with similar battery and bigger screen..
And SD 625 clock speed is much higher than SD 435..
SD 450 in redmi 5 gets 13.5 hour or so in web browsoing with only """"3300mah battery"""" and bigger screen than redmi 4 with 4000mah.. This is significant improvement in efficiency and a more direct comparison relatively although clock speed is higher and screen is bigger here
Now All of the above are octa cores based on low power and low performance cortex a53 cores exclusively 8x A53 ..
This SD 660 in Nokia 7 plus is powerful and has 4 x coretx A73 based cores which are meant to deliver performance and aren't power efficient..
Look at performance numbers in geekbench your SD 435 - single core 659 , multi - 1820 , this SD 660 gets single core 1619 and multi - 5893
In multi that is more than 200% faster than SD 435 ..
So you can't compare it with SD 660..
And SD 660 can't even be compared it with SD 630/625..
