Huawei P20 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S9+

27 April 2018
1x, 2x... 5x. Zooming smartphone cameras are no longer a novelty - in fact a numbers race is forming. Asus' Zenfone Zoom couldn't make waves, but Huawei appears on the right track to do so with the P20 Pro and its 3x zoom camera. We figured we'd pit it against the Galaxy S9+ - the latest phone to come out with what's become the standard 2x zoom.

I can just sense how gsmarena guys are finding it hard to accept indeed Huawei p20 pro is the king! Let's just all be realistic most of you guys usually take your videos in 1080p resolution and Huawei is best stabilized at that resolution, personally I don't need much of 4k videos. So that leads me to my point, when it comes to still photos both are good but Huawei has slight advantage because you have an option to boost the scene with AI on if you wish, and now where the difference comes to play is Lowlight shots. Let's just all be sincere, with Huawei master AI off still the lowlight photos beats S9+ hands down! And when night mode is activated we all know who is the winner!! So let's stop this fanboism and accept Huawei p20 pro is the real deal period!!

All those phones take great photos, who cares?

        Pixel 2 > P20 > Pixel 1 > S9 > iPhone X

That's the reality. Samsung fanboys will argue otherwise, but that's what fanboys do anyway.

Too much camera hype for the Huawei but look at the result when compare to other device.

This is basically the results repeated all over again from the camera comparison tool: in daylight S9+ has consistently higher sharpness across the frame which unlike the P20Pro's are not the results of oversharpening, the P20Pro shows signs of aggregated clumps (from NR and oversharpening and perhaps the BW mask from the monochrome sensor) at pixel level in the place of actual detail, see the clear difference in the background castles in the snail shot. Red and blue interpolation artifacts from the P20Pro are still present at the far side of the background building, as always, so we know that interpolation is a problem even in 10MP mode, not just 40MP. Also in the snail shot the S9+ preserves the texture of the snail MUCH better while the Huawei "flattens" the snail, as if applying a coat of wax, if that's not "plasticky" I don't know what is. The shot of the mountains is similar only the S9+ shows more sharpening than usual, but even then at least it DOES have the details as opposed to the P20Pro "merging" much of the leaves together.
The 2x zoom on the P20Pro looks like a bad PS job of stamping the tree onto the blue background, S9+'s also bad but not nearly as bad. The bare tree in the building sample is also typical of Huawei's oversharpening, the S9+ correctly renders the branches as brown, while the intense oversharpening from Huawei turns it into strokes of black and grey.
The 3x zoom does do what it's supposed to do and hands the P20Pro the advantage at that magnification, and to be honest I've seen a more dramatic comparison before.
The entire right half of the first night scene in night mode is pretty impressionist, as expected, so it's best to keep away from it unless you really need an ultra-low-light shot where there's hardly even any artificial lighting, and can't do it yourself shooting underexposed RAWs and with a few clicks in PS. The regular mode shows an unexpected performance gap, strange.
In night samples showing sky only the P20Pro shows strange black blotches in the sky, but these samples still seem better than in Phonearena's night shot comparison, again, strange.

                      Fair competition.

S9+ is a good all rounder camera phone no doubt.
P20 Pro is great as well but not very consistent and have things on the camera that S9+ cant do.

My personal opinion, P20 pro anyday as i take pics daily and videos maybe once in a month, and if i do, i just using FHD and huawei good at it. I love taking night scenery pictures so P20 pro is an advantage. Hopefully huawei can provide update for its camera algorithm to be improve better and add EIS in 4k videos.

                      Both are good phones.

Wish gsma would do p20pro vs. XZ2 comparison, but premium one will be more fun to compare.

                            P20 Pro best in All.

I think the S9+ is a better overall pick. Huawei has tried really hard and got some really good tricks but it's lack of consistency will lose it the fight. Hopefully Huawei does sth like OnePlus & add 4k vid stabilisation & at least 1080p selfie video (I mean, c'mon)..

i literally puked when i saw P20s Pro night mode that was a real paint show but pro photo mode was much better at night shots but on the other hand S9 is still the king all around and far superior selfie shots at day light with superb pixel level detail. S9 is KOH.
