Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera review

14 June 2018
Looking at the title of the review, we can't help but think a quick explanation is in order. Namely, one clearing up which product we are reviewing. We've seen horrible naming conventions in the smartphone realm time and time again, but as far as sheer complexity and confusion of choice goes, Xiaomi arguably takes the cake with the current Redmi generation.

I have this phone and im happy with it. I play games like 3 hrs a day (mostly more especially when i have a lot of idle time) read a lot of online news and sneaking into online shops, an hour at least of spotify play time, use gps in the morning and afternoon trips, check emails and social messaging regularly, and watch my favorite nexflix shows. I do this everyday and i still have more juice to squeeze to make myself go to sleep at past midnight.
I usually charge my phone in the morning before going to work or somewhere else and it is so easy to get my phone charged with qc 3.0 (i dont use the charger that comes with the package).
With the camera, im quite happy with the quality and speed of it, it nothing compared to high end top of the line phones though. It is i think a 2 generation upgrade from my redmi note 4x. But youre gonna appreciate it especially when you consider the cost. I just love the camera and everything.
True value phone that you wont be shy of recommending to your family and friends who are into a budget mid-range phone without sacrificing quality and specs.

Thank you.

b3rvirus, 15 Jun 2018That could be said right back at you, the use of sony inste... moreBetter quality sensors produce better images with accurate colors, wide dynamic range, lower noise.
Zuk z2 had relatively big sensor with bigger pixels but image quality was inferior because of omnivision sensor.
Mi A1 used Sony IMX386 sensor. Redmi note 4 qualcomm used sony IMX258 sensor, later models used samsung sensors and finally settled for omnivision sensors. But image quality from same spec sony sensor was best followed by samsung and worst from omnivisiin as was discussed at length in MIUI and xda forums.

MG7, 15 Jun 2018I said same sensors. Yes MI 6x has wider aperture means bet... moreThat could be said right back at you, the use of sony instead of samsung sensor, or qualcomm instead of mediatek, or 20MP instead of 13MP doesn't necessarily means better real world usage.

However better camera hardware - wider aperture & bigger sensor will always means better real world usage - faster focus, less chance of blurry photos, better results in low light, whatever the software or processing used.

Manufacturer of the sensor or comparing with other phone models are irrelevant, samsung phones also uses their own-made sensor in their high-end lineup, so does sony on their budget phones. Mi A1 with 1/2.9" OV sensor produce photos a little bit better than Redmi Note 4 with IMX 214 sensor. We are not talking about the high-end sony IMX 363 used in Pixel 2 or mi Mix 2s. Redmi Note 5 Pro are comparable but not better than global version of Redmi Note 5.

          so pixel phone

And Sony have crazy optimization for its software to counter its smallish battery problem.

Problem being, if you want comparable spec from sony or samsung, their phones can easily be 50% more expensive and the biggest problem is that while they have better optimization, they also have smaller battery which in the end, both of them still have less real world SoT to Xiaomi redmi note.

b3rvirus, 15 Jun 2018Its comparable but can't be better.. While color rendition ... moreI said same sensors. Yes MI 6x has wider aperture means better low light photos. But in good light quality should be comparable.
RN5 AI has better spec sensor, but that doesn't necessarily transform into better real world usage. Sony sensors are known for better quality and generally used in high end phones. While omnivision and samsung sensors are frequently used in budget segment.
Use of same sony sensor in MI 6x indicates that it has upper hand.

MG7, 15 Jun 2018Indian version has same ( back 12MP and front) sony sensors... moreIts comparable but can't be better.. While color rendition is more of sensor character, hardware side, F/1.9 and 1/2.55" always take 70% more light compared to F/2.2 lens and 1/2.9" sensor, means with the same processing it can produce the same photo, but with faster shutter speed and/or lower ISO.

Also mi6x has F/1.75 aperture so its not the same. And true photo comparison should be done with also comparing shutter speed and ISO settings (EXIF data)

Yesterday i bought Redmi Note 5 Pro and its worth every penny.. really superb excellent and value for money mobile

Indian version has same ( back 12MP and front) sony sensors as MI 6x, so camera performance should be better. Dual volte is coming with oreo as confirmed by Xiaomi.
                      Comparison is given here: http://en.miui.com/thread-2151903-1-1.html

                          Best mobile in a work

Please review Asua Zenfone 5 and compare the camera with this phone.
Both using SD636 and have AI enhancement.

The only thing Asus ZF5 clearly excell is audio departement:
                            - Stereo speakers
                            - 24 bits 192khz audio
                            - DTS headphone X

It would have been nice to now how fast is the charge using a QC3.0 charger. Otherwise great device (if only it would have usb-c…).

Excellent. Now, please review the Mi8 SE. :D

If only i haven't bought the honor 7x perhaps i will buy this one. It's just that it's too late for sunlight to see this phone. This is a real upgrade for the legendary redmi note 4x. Awesome!

Well done,Xiaomi...again,they`ve made an excellent budget phone...For 200euro it`s perfect for 95% of potential buyers...

AnonD-641645, 14 Jun 2018"... the supplied charger is not among the fastest" It's 5... moreThat charging rate is already fast. But you also have to consider the fact that this phone has a humongous 4000mAh battery, so phones with less battery capacity will charge faster when using the same charger and same power supply.
