Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium hands-on review

21 July 2018
Premium Sony Xperias is where a lot of firsts happen - first 4K display on a smartphone with the Z5 Premium, first HDR display on a smartphone with the XZ Premium alongside 960fps super slow-mo video recording, and now, on the Xperia XZ2 Premium - a dual camera for the first time on a Sony smartphone (a bit late to that party, eh?).

Imagestacking with no realtime processing cannot avoid this.
Common street night shots, the most common night photo scenario, are unusable, all full of "ghosts" on P20 Pro.

I don't know why people complain about design before apple every company launch their phone with different design see all the old nokia phone, motorola, sony and others I really want that old days because I want my phone look different then every phone in market today
all are same copy cats and when you buy new iphone 7+ or 8+ and this the same design MI A1 then what's different in both phone design.

BillyUK, 22 Jul 2018This looks like a phone from 3 years ago - those top and bo... morethe phones of 3 years ago do not have 4k HDR 10-bit screens, the other phones do use technology from 3 years ago, 8-bit SDR screens and low resolutions

LG Superfan, 22 Jul 2018Yeah those curves are too much a slight would be ok but not... moreI agree about the camera and fingerprint placement. Dont think it has ever been this ugly on a sony phone.
Oh the thickness is almost 12 mm. Best curves ever.

Steve, 22 Jul 2018Film making? On a crappy mobile camera? At low light? Fi... moreActually, you don't need to lecture me that smartphone cameras are garbage when it comes to low light photo and video performance. And yes, I do own LED video lights, a camcorder and also a dSLR with several lenses including two f/1.4 prime lenses. Just because I commented that the XZ2 low light output quality is not good enough for tv viewing doesn't mean I do not want such capability in a smartphone. Certain family bonding and social situations worth capturing can sometimes present themselves when you least expect them, when you don't have your serious equipment with you. And it is those memories that I want to enjoy viewing on my 60" tv screen. If the quality is not good enough when viewed on bigger screens, I'm not upgrading. And mind you, I don't upgrade to a $1,000 phone just because its low light photo and video capability is good for mobile viewing only. I already have a smartphone that does better in low light with manual focus, selectable frame rates, manual ISO, manual white balance, manual exposure compensation and manual hi-fi audio settings.

This is an open letter and a request to the GSM Arena Team who produced this hand-on review of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium. When you publish your full review of the phone - or even now - please let your readers know if VoLTE works with T-Mobile when using the Xperia XZ2 Premium. Or, if VoLTE works with any other United States carrier when using the Xperia XZ2 Premium.

It is unfortunately an established fact that T-Mobile, and possibly other United States carriers, are disallowing VoLTE connections when using the latest Sony phones. Until shown otherwise I have no expectations that the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium will perform differently.

4G LTE data connections may go through on applicable bands, but as soon as one makes a phone call the connection will drop to 3G or an equivalent lowered quality call connection.

Tann Hauser, 22 Jul 2018Oh its optimised....to not capture motion blur in lowlight,... moreYou wouldn't get motion blur on P20/P20 Pro as long as you stick to Auto mode. You probably should concern about 3-second-long shutter lag that occurs every single time you take a photo in dual camera mode on XZ2 Premium more.
