Asus Zenfone 5z review

01 September 2018
The Asus ZenFone 5Z has been around for some time now. Flagship ZenFone series devices have been known to border on the excess in the past, and while some of that may have become par for the course for flagship Android phones these days, the ZenFone 5Z leaves no stone unturned and comes with all the proverbial bells and whistles. As with previous ZenFone flagships, it is also priced exceedingly well positioning it squarely between the Poco F1 and the OnePlus 6 but is that really the whole story? Let’s find out.

Anonymous, 03 Sep 2018Asus is the worst company out there. Mess around so much wi... moremaybe the first zenfones 4,5 and 6 were. However I've used their fonepad 7, one of the best budget tablet/phone for it's time for 3 years without a problem, and now I have a padfone E which has been working relentlessly for 3 years with no problems other than the smallish ram for these days, I've owned many brands and this one is really suitable for a workhorse.

People who've owned ZF3 around me couldn't be happier with its performance and camera (and price). And it got upgraded to oreo with their recent zenUI iterations they're even better.
As for the hardware breaking thing, many OTAs could be incompatible with some hardware, ever heard of S8 losing WIFI after an updae? I did.

also unlike many OEMs, Asus offers bootloader unlock on their site which can be easily applied, and ZF5z has started to get custom ROMs with treble. And switching back to the original ROM is a breeze, you'd lose OTA updates, however.

For the price, Asus has made less compromises than competitors IMO and still delivered a great device. My country has the 5 variant, and I'm waiting for the Z to arrive.

They need to review after the latest system update, camera are optimized and amazing after the system update, i also notice the antutu score is not accurate in the benchmark review. i score about 172k now but before the update camera is worse that review are the old review. new update fixed all bugs and the camera too.

Asus is the worst company out there. Mess around so much with the OS that it actually breaks the hardware of the phone.

An incomplete review is simply unacceptable by gsmarena, given its usually high standards.

This review is like reading the review of a new car, which checks out the doors, tyres, seats, music system and lights, but decides not to check its engine and then absolves itself with a silly disclaimer.

Without subjecting the phone to all the usual tests, a half-hearted review is not only unacceptable and incomplete, it's also incompetent.

Sorry, but gsmarena let us down this big time and the many angry reactions in this comments section echo that dismay

I hate this kind review, where is the score? battery ratting? come on

Kiyasuriin, 02 Sep 2018Did you read the Disclaimer, they weren't in the labs and u... moreThe disclaimer is obviously there, but my simple point is this: If you can't do a full-fledged review, why post such a useless review? What's the point of this review? I can't take any decisions about this phone based on this. People read reviews so they can get an unbiased assessment of the phone and decide whether or not it suits their needs. A major reason why I come to GSMArena is that their reviews are usually very consistent and comprehensive; they perform certain tests the results of which can be easily used to compare different devices.

But I'm really not sure why they have been pushing out these fake reviews of late.

It has Widevine L1 so Netflix HD works fine
It has a usable 2nd camera. Every other reviewer praised the speakers for being loud and one of the better ones on phones.

Bloatware... It has next to none. Fewer than any phone except OP or Pixel but I consider several Google apps bloatware.

I use smallest font and size and no buttons on the UI are smaller than on my OP6 when I view them next to each other. Not the camera. In fact ASUS UI is still bigger than OP6 on smallest for both as the DPI is lower.

Firstly, thank you GSMArena for taking my comment seriously and introducing a review of this phone (now, I'm not quite sure if the motivation was my comment only, but anyways).

There's only one thing missing from it, the audio quality test which I was really looking forward to.
From the photos, it appears the device was reviewed somewhere in India, so maybe it wasn't a possibility so far from your HQ. No worries.

I have this phone for a week. It is very sw light, no bloatware, google services are very compatible and the notch is acceptable also can be hidden. Powerfull speakers and it has dual 4G LTE sim cards. Display is wonderful and is almost like AMOLED (I have also S6).
Pros: Camera low light, second wide camera, 3 mics, NFC, steel frame, fingerprint is fast, dual speakers, DTS, google mesages out of the box, google assistant out of the box, AI features, unlimited 4K 60FPS recording, FM radio, capacitive buttons gestures, no heating.
Cons: User interface not polished for other languages, ringtones selection are not that great, wireless charging missing, IR missing, maybe developers support but I don't care for that much.
About Pocophone F1 just buy it. There is no need for argument. Some are for 5Z some for F1. For me 5Z is the deal.

This is a great bang for the buck.

I also think no review is better than a half done review.

Much shame imo, it can ruin the name of a product needlessly.

Power of the pen is dangerous without responsibility in its usage, especially in today's media circus.

Why does reviewers keep saying that Asus doesn't have a good record of updating their phones. In my experience, that's just not true. Even their two year old Zenfone 3 is happily running Oreo now. Their Zenfone 5 has the July 2018 security update installed which is on par with devices from other top tier smartphone maker.

However I can pretty much fill up the battery test results exactly according to GSMarena's script.
(It became a standard where I work too ,to determimd APC (Avarage power consumption) of the phone and code apps accordingly.
                                    AHEM~
According to my tests I managed to squeeze out 84h of endurance, about 19:50h of talk time in 3G, 10:21h of browsing, about 11:09h of Video playback, and a decent 7 hours of gaming.on a SINGLE CHARGE.
Charging rates in 30 minutes pumped in a quite generous 43%, however that's not a lot.

Display and lab test is the point where GSMArena review has the highest credibility among tech-reviewer. But this kind of article is just a turn-off point. No objectivity and credibility here.

Why is this review different? Is it not possible to mail the package to GSMArena Headquarters where rigorous testing is feasible?

Or, is this a cost-minimization practice? I understand completely that getting hands on every phone is not economically possible. I just want to know why this was done.
