Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) hands-on review

13 October 2018
The world's first quad camera smartphone. Kind of has a ring to it, doesn’t it? Depending on how you tally up the snappers, that statement is true and unquestionably so, if you only consider the rear camera setup. Frankly, we can't exactly say we are too surprised. It was more or less a matter of time. But, if we had to place some predictions, our money would have definitely been on a more obscure manufacturer finally polling out the quad camera card, rather than Samsung.

"Samsung's UI also lacks gesture navigation out of the box."

How is it a CON of Samsung's UI, edi***?? This shows Samsung is NOT A FOLLOWER of Google's cra**y iPhone X gestures wannabe.

"The bottom of the handset hosts the single speaker grill, main microphone and the USB-C port. Right next to it - a good old, trusty 3.5mm audio jack. No dongles needed."

Sounds like music to our Android Truthers' / Users' ears :D

"On one hand, we love that Samsung leveraged the huge body of the Galaxy A9 (2018) and opted for a dedicated microSD card slot, alongside the duo of nanoSIM ones. No hybrid setups here."

Seems like what Galaxy S9, S9+ & Note 9 should have done IMHO.

At first I wasn't a big fan of the back design seen on the GALAXY A8 STAR, because it doesn't look like a SAMSUNG phone, it was kinda ugly to be honest. But now it seems like I am starting to like the back design, of course I'd recommend them to move the cameras to the middle if u can still reach the fingerprint sensor naturally, but at least for now it's still acceptable. I like how SAMSUNG is trying to innovate these things in mid-end smartphones instead of the high-end flagships, four cameras is considered crazy for a mid-end. Well, like what GSMARENA said, there are problems with the white balance in photos, TheTechChap also pointed that out too. Pre-production units shouldn't be taken too seriously, all SAMSUNG need to do is to fix it through a software update, and after that the smartphone is probably good to go

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Super AMOLED screen. Large 3800 mAh battery. SnapDragon 660.

128 GB of Internal storage with 6 or 8 GB RAM! That's awesome for a mid-ranger.

3.5 mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. Nice gradient colour options too (Lemonde Blue looks sweet and unique).

Great Camera combination, like that of the LG V40. Looks very promising with large primary resolution and f1.7 aperture. Although the Depth Sensor is probably just there to make up the numbers. And the Telephoto sensor makes it even more redundant. Selfie camera seems good too.

My only gripe is they should have gone for the centrally placed camera alignment, like traditional Samsung design. Also, they should price it right too. Waiting for the full review.

Still, if Samsung is willing to take such a radical approach with a mid-ranger, just imagine how the S10 will turn out! Exciting Times!

Price must be convincing otherwise four camera hole is just hole.

Whackcar, 13 Oct 2018Price isn't good. The camera quality is not impressive. No ... morethere will be more improvements , as they said this is an early pre production unit , should wait for the official ones with final improvements . and it's quite good actually , details remain good with very low noise even with 100% crop ..

Price isn't good. The camera quality is not impressive. No IP certification even though previous versions had it. Bland design.

If they had priced it reasonably, i would've approved it, but where it stands, i would suggest you to look at alternatives instead.
