Nokia N95 8GB review: Return of the king

23 November 2007
About a year ago Nokia released a tech-freak's dream of a handset offering a mouthwatering horde of features in a fairly compact size. The omnipresent N95 spawned a successor and now the question is how much better can it get. Nokia N95 8GB sure has good...

I actually work in a phone store and get to use, test and handle pretty much all the handsets that are posted here on GSM.

Being able to do this means that I have the both of all worlds and can use the handsets over long periods of time and give proper opinions of things unlike all the other people here, who seem to walk instore look at it, maybe test it for a few minutes, and then walk out again.

Seriously, the quality of Nokias premium handsets are just that... Premium. They have the features that customer want, with the looks and construction to go with it. If you want something with more features, then get something dedicated to that purpose and don't complain when someone tries something new to see how it works and could function for them in the future.

Basically, by all means recommend a handset that you've been able to use and benefit from, but don't judge something by looks, previous bad experiences or just to be cynical if a few too many people like it.

Sharma - do you want this phone to cook your dinner too? ffs what do you want... sure there might be other phones with one feature better than the other in certain aspects but few phone round it all up into a decent package.

xenon flash is overrated... whats the point of having such a feature when phone cams are always rubbish no matter what lens or MP they have.

OK, I have a couple of questions ONLY FOR N95 8GB USERS:

1.- the photos in the dark (in a discotheca, for example) are the

same/better quality as the N73 ME?

2.- the quality of the sound USING EARPHONES is as good as the N73 ME, AND has it got the same stereo widening?

Could you please reply my mail.
          Thanks in advance.

            @ me
what i meant was the person below implied that the only reason Nokia did not implement vga resolution was bcoz it drained battery life. That is a whole lot of hogwash. If it were so nokia would never have implemented 800 by 352 internal screen in addition to the external screen on e90.Yes e90 has larger battery but it also has a very large internal screen in addition to the external screen.plus its battery supplies power to the huge internal qwerty keypad backlighting. I think 1200mAH battery will be sufficient to power n95 8gb's smaller [relatively] 2.8 inch screen and keypad. Plus I very much doubt if people would mind if nokia kept the original 2.6 inch screen of the n95 and equipped it with vga resolution. As for the ngage gaming nokia has crippled that too...u can play the soccer demo only 10 times b4 u have to download the full game [with a fee of course].lol...so nokia earns money if u wish to engage voice activated gps....it earns money if u want to enjoy gaming...clever eh? Maybe Steve Jobs comes down for coffee at Nokia and gives it pointers on how to suck the last drops of blood from the customer.

I don't know what you people get by showing fault in Nokia after listening complaint about N95 8GB i'm sure they don't own this phone first of all this phone is not slow as people here said and if the man own this phone than why he don't that Nokia web browser is based on safari web browser that is same as iphone second thing N95 is smaller in size compared to iphone and weight of iphone is 140gm and wt of N95 is 127gm although N95 8GB is not slim as far as GPS concern N95 8GB is Not for every day GPS use if you have car better buy car GPS system N95 8GB is already heavily loaded but still rivals want more features as far display concern Display is very good adding VGA resolution will make display 4 times more power hungry for eg O2 flame has VGA display and has 1650mAH battery still it don't last more than two days so please stop posting crap.

Features are great, but GPS is useless actually if u really need it , better buy dedicated receivers and put in ur car. construction and buttons design are very suck. 6500 slider looks alot more better. so , i hope nokia will use better material to build such a high tech phone.

Let me put it down this way.....FIRST DISADVANTAGE-outdated gps...other companies like asus use sirf star3 chipset...N95 uses star2. SECOND DISADVANTAGE-incompatibility with 3rd party software like tomtom, etc.THIRD DISADVANTAGE-nokia has intentionally crippled the voice assist and other features to suck more money just after it has made you pay through the nose for the phone. Voice assisted navigation is free on other phones like the htc touch cruise and all other gps enabled phones other than nokia.4TH DISADVANTAGE-just put an old n80 display next to a n958gb and compare the two screens.....you will understand what washed out means.Nokia reverted to qvga displays just because they are a whole lot less expensive to produce. It had started on the right path with the n80 but then realised that since the other manufacturers were still dishing out qvga...they thought "hey why bother we can still get good money for these crappy screens".FIFTH DISADVANTAGE-hold an n95 8gb in your hand, feel it,roll it about in your hand...forget its a nokia....now compare it to a samsung slider...tell me very honestly which sliding mechanism you prefer...the smooth crisp motion of the samsung or the wobbly movement of the n95.but dont let me influence you...just close your eyes and feel them both in your hand. And before I get flamed I hate samsung for their hopeless battery life...im just talking about the construction here.....tell me in all honesty which one feels better to open and close.LASTLY after six months you will have forgotten all about n95 8gb and will be wondering what price you will get for the phone which you bought for nearly a thousand dollars and will be grateful if someone offers you a couple of hundred dollars for it which you will use along with 600 to 700 dollars more of your hard earned money to buy another hot phone of the moment. Would you accept such a drastic reduction in resale value in less than a year for your home audio system or even an expensive watch? Its all in the marketing and kudos to the mobile manufacturers for creating the image that you are horribly outdated if you use the same mobile for more than a year so that you keep buying their stuff. just my two cents worth. btw I use the original n95 and a n80....and i still prefer to view images on my n80. my black n80 looks newer than my n95 whose cheap silver paint has flaked away after less than 5 months....and i dont even think of using its gps .....what a joke....ull be an old man by the time it logs on and good luck trying it in a car.

To all paid Non N95 8GB user
for sure none of the people here own this phone just visit SMAPE.COM were G800 had lost battle with N95 and K850i in terms of display also in many cases Old N95 perform well tham G800 and k850i (N95 lost in few cases and in Night shot that may be bcoz of strong JPEG comprasion and LED flash) no matter what Nokia introduced u people never going to say good about Nokia also N95 8GB has best QVGA display and its brightness is very good Samsung G800 has poor viewing angle k850i has bit brighter display bcoz of 2.2" diagonal so stop posting crap if you don't know about this phone

I've played around with a friend's N95 8GB. Impressive armada of applications. All the bells and whistles you could want in a phone. However, the screen is poor even if it's big. Contrary to the review, the colours look washed out. And the entire unit feels plasticky, like you would come to expect of a Nokia handset. Looks the part but doesn't feel the part of a mobile that costs in the top-tier.

GSMarena pertains the "N95 8Gb display".

Calling N95 display excellent while in fact Samsung G800 has much much better display than the latter is a very terrible insanity. Nokia's Display edges are only the legibility under the sun, but comparing displays's color render, quality, sharpness and color reproduction even the 16M sheet on the N95 has not much to brag about - one word: biased!
