Xiaomi Mi 9 review

20 February 2019
An eventful Mobile Congress might be upon us and it's shaping to be nothing short of a blast. But the first flagship for year 2019 is now out and it's not coming from Spain but China - indeed, we are talking about the Xiaomi Mi 9.

Erht, 21 Feb 2019There's a different type of stabilization, a closed-loop vo... moreYes, I've read about Closed-loop VCM tech they employed. But it seems that this tech only helps the autofocus function of the camera. Meaning, it will be able to keep track and focus objects much faster. This is useful in well-lit shots where objects can easily be monitored by the sensor, which in turn will communicate to the Lens and the VCM. So yes, it still does help in the stabilization 'like an OIS'... but that doesn't seem to help in long-exposure shots where camera sensor stability itself is a major concern. Long-exposure shots(like the Night Mode) has little concern on the 'autofocus' function of the camera, where the VCM is most applicable. On the other hand, Long-exposure shots concerns more about the stability of the sensor - which considers the entire frame of the shot to be steady. LE shots are less on autofocus and more on sensor stabilization, given that it considers the entire frame of the shot(like landscape mode) and not a focus point alone, even though they take multiple pictures and stack it to produce a final output. This translates to subpar quality of night time shots. Im looking forward to this phone. So i hope Xiaomi will optimize its camera software to maximize the benefit of employing the close-loop VCM tech.

Wait.... no SD card expansion, no headphone jack, no optical stabilisation... just a brand new fast SoC... but they kept an IR-blaster and the (white only) notification LED!

Am I supposed to be thrilled now? Seriously?

Anonymous, 21 Feb 2019He's lying. Mi 8 is still around 380 USDBecause you don't have direct access to China, and have to rely on 3rd party resellers who price it at a premium to earn profits. Some of us CAN buy directly from China though.

Here's a current Chinese listing of the Mi 8
                  https://item.jd.com/7437780.html

2399 yuan, with an instant 200 yuan off coupon. So 2199 yuan, or about $327.

They've increased the price a bit during the Chinese New Year period.

Picked up the second one on a clearance sale for myself. $245 is 20% off. I'm not a fan of the giant notch, or MIUI's aggressive RAM management as whitelisting apps seem to work only sometimes, but other than that we're happy with our Mi 8's.

Of course we're using GCam, why wouldn't you?

Maybe now they are price like that. I have to agree with the above guy. The xiaomi forum is full of complaints. I even complained there but no xiaomi moderator replied. So i deleted the forum app as it is a waste of time. It's true there is a lot of bug as well. Auto brightness is broken. 1080p 60fps/120fps has been removed, battery drains faster, notch is not optimized, apps looks out of place, notifications sound do not work well.....should I continue? By the way when Xiaomi started selling this phone, they advertised it as a Flagship. So I do not understand your thinking about being a midrange. All the functions that are either broken or barely working, you are saying it is working great. And the camera is really bad in low light after the pie update. But if you use gcam it is good.

It is a midrange phone by price, that crushes any other midranger in performance, screen and camera quality. The cameras are awesome including low light and backlit conditions. Good battery life too (7 to 8 hr SOT).
