Huawei Mate X hands-on review

24 February 2019
"Foldable" is clearly the buzz -word of 2019. Well, that and 5G - a rather confusing situation that has been causing some evident confusion among manufacturers. Huawei clearly decided on a Pokemnon, "Gotta Catch 'EM All" approach to the situation with the Mate X - a truly head-turning device that both rocks a foldable display and what Huawei claims is the faster 5G connectivity around.

How is this a hands-on review? Nobody got to touch it other than a Huawei staff...

Even if there's a higher chance for it to break after a fall, at least this design is practical in terms of daily use. I can't see myself using a phone like the fold where the basic screen is a narrow 4.6" and something like 60% screen to body ratio.

55W Huawei SuperCharge? Oh yes! :)

The device looks interesting, but price wise and early stage of the technology which does not guarantee the display will survive even a month of heavy usage make it a very risky buy even if you have 2k to throw away.

I'd say let's wait and see.

namla, 24 Feb 2019Damn...that was pretty..ikr like a super model compared to Galaxy fold

2300 eur...thats too much. Just because it is foldable. For that kind of money it is better to go for a 2week long trip.

alexzhivil, 24 Feb 2019It's obviously limited edition and the price is accordingly... moreHere's an answer for you.. Samsung actually tried to make a durable, usable and practical device.
How on earth is this supposed to withstand falls and everyday wear and tear??
There's no way to put a case on it!
And the freaking screen is entirely exposed.
Sorry but how stupid is that! Just no.
Looks like a cool thing to use and play around with in a house though.

Sorry Huawei but I just don't see how this can be durable, and how it can be protected!
The entirely exposed screen, especially on the folded edge, thin frame that I can't imagine enduring a fall on a hard surface without a case.

Outside wrap-around screen is just a bad, stupid idea!

Where are all the Huawei zealots defending this ridiculous price?
What's with the monstrous hump on one of the edges?
I will say that the small outer screen on the Galaxy Fold is a let down but the design overall is way better than this. And its priced better too.

Tann Hauser, 24 Feb 2019Both ridiculously priced and niche concepts still. But I ... moreNobody's got anything yet. Samsung & Huawei are on their iterations of a new concept. Both have their flaws and positives. It will take them a few iterations before we get a good product. No one is fan of a small primary screen or an all body screen.

Notch-less screen, space for hi end camera(depth, superwide,...) which doubles as a selfie.
Though for uniform thickness it would need new kind of camera tech, its way more practical and better looking than samsung one. As for screen protection, I never felt safe even using gorillas, though outdoor protectors for the sides would be more than enough, without even covering the screen.

Droid, 24 Feb 2019Worse design. Screen is exposed. And that price!!! Exactly!!

Horrible and screen is exposed, loooool!!!!
                                Give me the Samsung.

Both ridiculously priced and niche concepts still.
But I LOLed at Samsungs awful design.
This..., this is what foldable concept should be, no ridiculous small front extra screens.
                                  Huawei got this one.

Well the design looks cool, notchless, no cutouts.. but that price of $2399 isnt really a cool aspect.

It's obviously limited edition and the price is accordingly, so It's not going for mass production.
But comparing it to the galaxy fold, what the hell was Samsung thinking?! They spent so many years working on a foldable phone, and yet, Huawei managed to bring us a something which looks so much better. What we got from the fold is a stupidly designed phone, super thick with 2 screens, the main one being tiny, and 6 cameras all over the place. A phone that looks like some old prototype. Huawei made Samsung look like amateurs. I just don't get it.

Looks really nice compared to the Galaxy Fold. Design reminds me of the Lenovo Yoga Tab when unfolded.
