Huawei P30 Pro review

26 March 2019
Huawei has completely blurred the lines between its signature Mate and P series by raising the bar higher and higher every six months. And it has done it yet again with the Huawei P30 Pro - now with an even larger AMOLED screen and a brand-new quad-camera setup that aims to become the new benchmark for the whole industry.

I am really skeptical about this new phone...i don't care about screen resolution, i don't care about 4K videos, i don't care about jack.. but Huawei... why you did not include screen gorilla glass ??? this would definitively be an issue ! you can not as customer purchase a 1000 EUR phone without being on a safety side with the screen. It's totally stupid from the Huawei team budget priority.

Just because I criticize Apple's predatory $1,000++ iphone pricing and do the same for android flagships copying Apple's $1,000++ pricing strategy doesn't mean I don't recommend them for users who really are brand conscious and image conscious especially if they have money to burn.

For the vast majority though, especially for the poor hapless ones who really should be saving the money instead for more important things, I share my insights based on my smartphone and photography learnings and experiences. If you don't like that, just ignore my comments. Gsmarena is a free speech site.

I have bought P30 pro with Huawei Watch GT promotion.

Oh you can add TECLAST fan too if you're ever familiar with the tablet brand (Teclast T20) that has 4G LTE, an 8100mAh battery, a 10.1" QHD/retina resolution (2560x1600) IPS screen, a fingerprint scanner, metal body and micro sd expansion all for an amazingly low price of around $200. Seriously, I don't care which brand I have. I'm not brand conscious and I only care about PRICE:PERFORMANCE ratio, features set, and longevity (doesn't have to be the most premium materials of construction as long as the materials used can stand the test of time).

I'm just letting others who aren't as financially capable as you know that they can buy a sub-$500 snapdragon 855 phone (Black Shark 2) or even a sub-$300 snapdragon 845 phone (Pocophone F1) and learn some photography basics and actually end up capturing better photos than the ones buying overpriced $1,000++ camera-centric phones claiming to produce 'dSLR like' photo quality (but are otherwise really just empty hype).

Not much difference in broad daylight except for fake bokeh fail and low light garbage detail in smartphones. Of course you won't notice when you make comparisons in a small mobile phone screen. In fact, you won't even notice the minuscule differences in photo quality among flagship phones unless you view them in your calibrated 4K UHD monitor or 4KTV.

ryballs, 01 Apr 2019Guarantee you majority of people won't notice the differenc... morein this world we are now - convenience, portability and speed is quite frankly what ppl like me look for in a product. so yes, i would rather buy a pricey flagship than buy bulky things just for a specific purpose.

Anonymous, 01 Apr 2019The latter. Anonymous, 01 Apr 2019The latter. Look, if you really want to spend $1000++ on a... moreGuarantee you majority of people won't notice the difference between a shot taken with an SLR vs P30 Pro.

A few months ago I gave my SLR to my daughter and started using a Mate 20 Pro instead, purely due to convenience.

My friends didn't notice the difference. In fact, when looking at my M20P photos, they still asked me which SLR I used and were surprised when I told them I used a phone..

Sure if you need to have the absolute highest quality photos, SLR is the way to go. But for the other 99% of people out there, P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro will more than suffice.

Look, if you really want to spend $1000++ on a phone upgrade because of the promised new camera capabilities and because the phone has become DXOmobile's topnotcher in camera performance, don't. But if you buy mainly for the prestige then go ahead. It's your money. At least I have shared my two cents to potential smartphone buyers - giving them helpful purchasing advice on why they might think twice purchasing/upgrading to $1,000++ smartphone for the exaggerated camera claims of smartphone manufacturers that prey on the buyers' photographic innocence.

I'd like to add, Google's night sight feature has been ported on the sub $300 Pocophone F1. And its got manual controls too in its native camera app. Still, if you really want bragging rights, then go ahead waste $1,000++ on a phone that tops DXOmark's mobile camera ratings instead of buying a real camera.
