Huawei P30 Pro review

26 March 2019
Huawei has completely blurred the lines between its signature Mate and P series by raising the bar higher and higher every six months. And it has done it yet again with the Huawei P30 Pro - now with an even larger AMOLED screen and a brand-new quad-camera setup that aims to become the new benchmark for the whole industry.

A few months ago I gave my SLR to my daughter and started using a Mate 20 Pro instead, purely due to convenience.

My friends didn't notice the difference. In fact, when looking at my M20P photos, they still asked me which SLR I used and were surprised when I told them I used a phone..

Sure if you need to have the absolute highest quality photos, SLR is the way to go. But for the other 99% of people out there, P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro will more than suffice.

realitychecker, 31 Mar 2019wait are you the "other guy" or the "dont buy that just buy... moreThe latter. Look, if you really want to spend $1000++ on a phone upgrade because of the promised new camera capabilities and because the phone has become DXOmobile's topnotcher in camera performance, don't. But if you buy mainly for the prestige then go ahead. It's your money. At least I have shared my two cents to potential smartphone buyers - giving them helpful purchasing advice on why they might think twice purchasing/upgrading to $1,000++ smartphone for the exaggerated camera claims of smartphone manufacturers that prey on the buyers' photographic innocence.

I'd like to add, Google's night sight feature has been ported on the sub $300 Pocophone F1. And its got manual controls too in its native camera app. Still, if you really want bragging rights, then go ahead waste $1,000++ on a phone that tops DXOmark's mobile camera ratings instead of buying a real camera.

realitychecker, 31 Mar 2019you have a wrong impression on me sir. i am not buying a ph... moreOk. So you are not buying a $1,000++ smartphone mainly because of the camera? And also, that nobody buys a $1,000++ phone mainly for the camera? What's your main reason then why you would be willing shell out $1,000 for a flagship phone? Processor speed? storage? RAM? 5G? Screen size? Well you can get all those in a sub $500 smartphone. Take away the snapdragon 855 (5G) and replace it with snapdragon 845 (4G) and you can get a sub $300 smartphone for that price. Don't you see? There's absolutely no reason why anyone should spend $1,000++ on a smartphone to get better photos (the main selling point of these ultra expensive smartphones). People deserve to know the PREDATORY pricing (excessive pricing) is all part of PRESTIGE marketing. Now if you buy a $1,000++ phone for the bragging rights, then by all means, do so. It's your money. But for the rest who value money and who really want excellent photos no smartphone can ever claim to even come close to, buy a $300 phone and learn to use manual controls. Save the change for a real camera if it's what's tempting you to waste $1,000 on a smartphone upgrade.

All listed cons are things I have absolutely no use for. In for a preorder.

Absolutely loving this beast, been using it for the past 3 days and the battery life alone has been insane.

Huawei have knocked this one out the park, particularly with the Camera, I love how it keeps Focus even at 50x Digital Zoom

rick, 31 Mar 2019buy p30 pro or LGv40 (if you need music quality & video... moreManual photo and video controls in a smartphone are not hype. I use them all the time. They are hype to those who don't know how to use them because they have no idea how dumb the phone's auto modes can get in certain situations.

Manual focus is mandatory for fireworks and other low light photos/videos to avoid focus hunting during periods of darkness and sudden brightness.

Manual ISO's and shutter speeds are essential in low light to control high ISO noise that can ruin a 4K UHD video footage that makes it look like it was shot on full HD or worse, SD quality due to excessive high ISO noise reduction.

Manual focus is also essential for taking videos of subjects behind railings or cages or anything that will cause the camera's auto focus to hunt back and forth.

Manual ISO and manual shutter speed is essential for good low light photos. Learn photography/videography basics and you will realize why manual controls are essential and a must have in any smartphone purporting to be a photography or videography powerhouse. That is essentially what makes Pixel phones and iphones poor choices for me. They don't have built-in manual controls. Although you can download camera apps with some manual controls, they don't have the same extensive manual controls flexibility as the native camera app.

But I do have the right to burst the hype bubble - on manufacturers making excessive claims about their smartphone's photographic, 'PRO' photo capabilites and perpetuating the myth that you need to upgrade to a $1000++ phone if you want the best low light photos. The smartphone industry is the only tech industry that has matured (even slowed down) and has intense cut throat competition and yet, the prices keep going up because of the claim to improved photographic capabilities. (the single strongest point for a flagship phone upgrade). I'd rather spend that same amount on a $300 entry level dSLR with kit lens + a $400 30mm f/1.4 prime lens and save the $300 (or use it to buy a new phone/phablet).

Go ahead spend $1000++ on a phone because you really do believe the low light photo quality and the longevity of the phone as a 'serious' photographic tool is worth spending $1,000++ on. I'm sure you'll be itching to upgrade to a new phone everytime a new model comes up offering even more camera modules, more megapixels, more zoom, and higher Dxomobile rating. Smartphone manufacturers for sure will love to have more users like you who upgrade to a new phone everytime some new phone model tops DXOmark mobile's camera rating system. :)
