5 megapixel face-off: Vox populi

05 December 2007
It’s been a while since our last cameraphone shootout and you know how much we love them. With all those 5 megapixel cameraphones around, our hands were just itching to make a grand 5 megapixel face-off with as many of the current 5 megapixel cameraphones as possible. The stars in this episode of our Shootout series...

i had the k800i but now i have got an n95 and the new sek850i in green the k800i camara was really good the flash worked really well. I have taken the same image at close range in the dark and the n95 when prited did not look as good as the k800i. the only really down side the the k850i is that the light senser on it seem to be quite bad because if you have your hand anywhere near the senser just under the flash the colour comes out all wrong and the flash some times does not go off on time so you just get a black picture. the zoom is fast and the camara does not take very long to take the picture unlike the really slow n95. You can nearly turn the k850i camara on and take a picture before the n95 has even turned the camara on. i dont think there is really a fully all round excellent camara phone that has got 5 mega pix but they are all good in there own ways the think that swings it for me is that the sek850i taken both micro sd and m2 memory card upto 8gb and that the camara is fast to take pics which is quite important in a phone as you dont always know when you are going to take a picture. plus all the really important functions are set as short keys along the 3,6,9,# keys.

See what I mean? another example of a fanboy here is - Huo.
Dude, no offense but your an ugly fanboy.

even an LG user estated that he needed the right ISO settings. You Fanboys makes GSMArena so dirty.

those SE fanboys that estated C as k850 photos doesn't know the phone, or their phone well.

Huo, you and your kind, the SE loyalists and the Nokia worshippers should all perish.

some even confuse what they mention, "i just want a phone, not a camera". if compare all aspect including phone function, i think SE less than a tiny chance. every function SE did, nokia did it well, and there is no true to be opposite...

wuahaha, nice prank from GSMARENA!!! the test just prove how SE fans always keep lying to their self. i see most stated C is SE K850, lol.

well, if some one said this is only half of the match and it gonna test on dark scenes.....if the test process in every aspect of camera function, definitely it test on video recording as well. do you think SE still stand a chance?

I own a KU990, and I can say that on auto settings pictures are overexposed, and have a washed out effect. But with appropriate ISO, white balance, and exposure settings, it's a completely different animal.

Just because of this review you are dumping your phone? You're easily influenced and pressured. IMHO K850i has more potential than these pictures, they are probably taken on auto as pointed out by many here; I usually use ISO 100 and this produces very nice pictures.

Im so curious as to how the shooting tests where performed.
I wonder what will happen if the g600 vs n95 came out? or n95 vs viewty? or k850 vs viewty? would it still be the same way?

Did the test use the optimal settings for each phone? Or did they just shoot-and-shoot-like-a-trigger-happy?

Also, Nokia fans and SE fans really want to win the survey, and obviously they will look for what obviously is SE's or Nokia's photos, and its easy to identify which is Nokias (Color explosion). So darn dirty and easy for them to say that it was the best because they can identify the phone's pictures...

The survey still has some faults and that they could not convey the truth. Thats my comment. If only the survey could be free from fanatics and biased minded readers, we can really know the best from the rest...

Oh darn, I was about to buy k850i and was hold back because of this review. what a spoiler. i wasn't looking at the shoot out alone but also for the features that a phone can bring. If I buy for example LG or Samsung in exchange for k850i, is it really worth it? will it give a better experience?

I'd wait a bit more but I'm still going for k850i. i like the autorotate function (the wallpapers can change pics or feature via the orientation of the phone), the flash lite themes, and the PSP feel of the menu.
it has HSDPA and Net front. That is why I chose k850i. I can live with the bugs. Firmware upgrades are always there anyway.

N95 was good, in fact very very good, but does the gps make a lot of fun? Even if it is has the best 5 mega pixel camera, I'd still edit my pics anyway. If I buy it, would I forget or regret having to own k850? But Nokia would still win the all-arounder phone, anyway.

g600's the clearest photographer phone I suggest. Also the video is good, I'd say. But I want to know what more could it give? As well as the LG phone.

The decisions have been made, but in the end instead of having the Best Camera Phone awards, it malignantly becomes The "Do-not-buy-the-other-phones" awards.

Honestly said, the reviews in CNET is more unbiased (P1i vs. E90 or E91)and really gave a good point of view about the beauty and flaw without deciding for themselves, letting the final decision be still under the users opinion. I hope in the future it becomes more this way.

Just saying what I want to say. But please, buy phones according to your preferences. And just avoid so much criticisms about other people instead of the phones.

Oh and please GSMArena, we want news about other phones as well. Be updated, look below and you will see that the news and reviews are all almost all nokias. How about phone rumors and design concepts? I think the thing that made you one good browse for mobile phone pit stop is because of your webpage lay-out (and more reads).
Oh please your contents could do better.
Sorry, its just a comment. No harm intended.

                      thumbs up to GSM Arena!

i'm looking for a new cellphone to replace my good old Siemens, and thanks to this blind-test review, i have decided to buy Nokia phone.

but, i think it will be a lot better if you guys use some sample images from profesional DSLR Camera (Canon, Nikon, or Fuji).
                      :)

                        1) GSMArena, please put up full 5mp resolution pictures.
                        2) Pictures taken with a (at least) mid-range digicam for reference.
                        3) Night shots/Low light shots

Lastly, I'm curious as to whether the pictures were all taken on auto settings. If that is the case, then the competition is not fair, since the cameras' abilities are not being employed to the fullest extent.

I said we should believe that samsung phones can take great photos.
so after N95 8GB SAMSUNG stands for the second place.

SO BE PATIENT AND SEE WHAT SGH-G800 WILL DO...........

poor SE. K850 is the great looser i beleive that k800 was good but k850 is awful.

NO!! the K850 is still better than 3 phones upside!!

                            1. N95 8Gb. carl zeiss is a fake on colour reproduction. u can see ur self... just take a snap with a N95 8Gb an compare with K850. u'll see the truth, who is the best !! the K850 is still the best camera phone with natural colour reproduction. remember... carl zeiss is fake on colour reproduction!!

                            2. LG Viewty is the new player of camera phone! they never used the hardware n software solution for the best photo!!

                            3. Samsung G600. i have tried taking some photo with this brand. and what i see is not what i get!! the color get blured! even if i use the correct setting in this phone.... so, im get stressed with this phone. the best from samsung is just slider, the screen quality, and external speaker!! remember that....

                            4. K850 ----> it's really awsome camera phone today!!! really and get closer the phone body to digital camera... rights? but, the weakness of this phone from camera form factor is the colour in the sky. if you snap the sky, you'll get the unfocus colour of the sky. and some the blurry colour from sand of brown object...

that is all i want to share with u all.... and if you want the best camera phone today, buy the i mobile 902. that was soooo really digital camera!! 5 megapixel with CCD sensor!! YES... CCD!! and it can interpolate to 8 megapixel without compress or downing the photo quality!!

so... if gsm arena wants to review who is the winner from camera phone which have 5 megapixel, the i mobile 902 is the answer!!

yes K850 has xenon flash thats y its better than N95 in lowlight...
but try to shoot without flash in lowlight, what happen to K850 photo?

its just like comparing for e.g. Wifi of N95 to conn. of K850..which one do u think is better?

lets face it...this year is not for SE.
btw..g600 is almost the same price as SE cyber-shot flagship!

                                        @gsArena
u guys are awsome...hope nxt year SE is on top...coz if not...cyber-shot logo is useless...
