5 megapixel face-off: Vox populi

05 December 2007
It’s been a while since our last cameraphone shootout and you know how much we love them. With all those 5 megapixel cameraphones around, our hands were just itching to make a grand 5 megapixel face-off with as many of the current 5 megapixel cameraphones as possible. The stars in this episode of our Shootout series...

None of these cameras are particularly good.

The N95 and G600 show better processing, less noise, and are smoother with details. However, the N95 is clearly oversaturated, and this becomes obvious in the last picture where the yellow stamen turns green. However, it's this oversaturated color that seams to appeal to the layman. If you look at 100% crops in the N95 vs K850i shootout, the oversaturation becomes a problem in darker regions/shadows, and becomes noisy or loses details. At 1MP resolution, however, this isn't obvious. The N95 utilizes oversaturation of colors to create the impression of being detailed. Again, in 100% crops, look closely and you will notice that the N95's images look smooth because it's oversaturated colors blur the artifacts.

The G600's quality is very similar to that of the N95, but just slightly behind. While the N95 exaggerates colors to create detail, the G600 oversharpens edges to create detail. This is obvious in the shot of the building, where the door frames are distinctly black, compared to the photos taken by the N95, KU990 and K850i. Yet, when you look at the background of the building, you see all these incoherent black edges in the landscape. Similarly, in the 2nd set of pictures, look at the 100% crops. The branches lose detail because of oversharpening, and resemble black sticks. The N95's oversaturation gives the tree an oddly artificial contrast, and the KU990, while softer on colors, ultimately shows the best definition. The colors of the G600 are a mean of the N95 and KU990/K850i. While it doesn't suffer from severe oversaturation, its colors are oversaturated as well, and are not accurate. The KU990 and K850i (while washed out), consistently show similar colors. The G600 departs from that. If you look at the Phone Arena shootout, with a Canon SD630 as reference, both the N95 and G600 produce false colors. The KU990 is the most accurate. Lastly, the G600 is prone to highlight clipping (blowing up bright colors). In the 2nd picture, the red roof becomes white, and in the 4th picturee, the yellow roof becomes white as well.

The KU990 is similar to the K850i. It isn't as smooth with details as the G600 or N95, and shows more noise in dark regions/shadows, its colors are the most accurate (refer to Phone Arena shootout, with a Canon SD630 as reference). Its pictures rank somewhere in the middle. When compared to the N95 and G600, it is ostensibly poorer, because the former cameras oversaturate their colors. However, examining 100% crops shows that it is on par with them in terms of detail. In fact, the N95 loses out on detail at times. Look at the 2nd set of photos. There is a blue poster with the face of a woman on the playground. The N95's rendering makes the poster look clearer by oversaturating the blue and white, so the font on the poster looks clearer. However, because of the oversaturation, the face on the poster loses detail. The face is more fully rendered in the KU990. The KU990 also suffers from some quite bad purple fringing. See the 3rd and 4th pictures. Lastly, the KU990 does favor reds, and has a red tinge in some outdoor shots, still its colors are the most accurate.

The K850i looks the poorest at first sight, and most people will quickly completely dismiss it. Its pictures are washed out, yet its colors are true. They are often similar to the KU990, in terms of both color and quality. Both show the same amount of noise and artifacting, although this often looks more severe on the KU990, because its deeper colors highlight it. The K850i is not actually that bad. It has a good amount of detail, although this impression is marred by the washed out color. Look at the 3rd set of pictures, 100% crops. The bark of the tree looks completely smooth in the G600 and N95. The K850i shows its pattern far more clearly. In terms of color rendering, it has few faults. There is very slight purple fringing in some photos. Its color is probably the most accurate, if we discount the washed out effect. It has good potential for post-processing.

you guys, actually you forget, some phone tested in this web might have different firmware with the one sold in market. In case, Sony firmware really differ in some country. I meant, latest firmware might correct the photo quality. Besides, there are lot of software to correct photo shot, not to mention, adobe photoshop, fireworks, etc.

nice one..but it would be better if there will be a new camera comparison featuring Samsung G800, Nokia N82, together with N95 8GB & SE K850i..All with Xenon Flash (except N95-8GB but its camera is quite good)

please keep in mind that the settings used was automatic settings. you can broad the possibilities much more with manual/advanced settings on each phone.

and keep in mind that the competition is only half way. we still haven't got the shots from low-light/night scenes.

Zoom the pictures and take a look at the number plate of the car on the right side."Y450CB" Do you see the difference ? On which picture can you read it more clearly ? Also try to read the car next to the "Y450CB".Guess this pictures tells you which produces more detailed pictures.

Congrats to the N95 as being the winner.

But we all know that it has post-processing features that oversaturate the colours hence making the pictures look more vivid. I have a SE K850i myself and I am happy with what it can produce; an unmodified picture of what I take. I can post-process the pics myself in Photoshop even better, so it's all good for me.

Although I am dissapointed in the poll... makes me want to sell the phone, hahaha.

hi,all my friends who wrote there reiews .i am challenging all of u .the pictures provided by gsm marena are fake.i have n95 and k850 too.i have taken pictures from both mobiles both mobiles are same in quality. but k850 win in moving images which my n95 dosent captures.

one important question why gsm mareena not taking pictures which are taken during extreemly in dark places.

take pictures from ur n95,g600 &lg viewty and from k850 and then see which one is the best. and who is the winner.

from my point of view the real battle is between n82,n95 8gb,k850,g800.......
