There is no way S10+ takes better videos but OK. Video is not about still camera recording moving objects nor is it about specs such as 60fps in 4K that drops frames if you shoot for longer periods of times (in minutes actually).

Xperia 1 has two ways to shoot video and both come with different result in color, detail, stabilization and mood in general. Such a shame Cinema Pro wasn't considered here. Cinema Pro offers better stabilization in 4K compared to Default Camera but Default Camera absolutely kills with hybrid EIS+OIS in 1080p footage especially in low light. Nothing comes close.

It's also a shame burst was never considered in still photography especially with moving subject where Xperia 1/XZ3/XZ2 series absolutely kills competition when it comes to focus of the subject. Something competition truly struggles with but Samsung is the only one that can compete so it's a shame we didn't see that test either.

Overall I agree with 75% of the test, it's fair and accurate most of the time. Besides video camera where I don't agree is built quality, Xperia 1 has a bit more Gorilla Glass layering compared to S10+, it's evident in hand but unlike Samsung's galvanized frame Xperia 1 frame is painted and it will chip a lot easier. If you take Gray version then you will get galvanized frame as well but overall Xperia tends to use softer aluminum frame.

Anonymous, 17 Jun 2019where is my wireless charging coil thoughWireless charging doesnt cost 600 bucks as well as water resistance.
And i dont think its essntial and must have in any cell phone.
If we make a phone with all possible add ons.
Take the very best from every phone brand and make a single phone it will cost way over 2000 bucks but whp will buy that kind of phone?
Only few people which can afford it.

Inm other words Imagine a phone with SD855, a pure android cyanogen which is best among all android devices, 12GB ram, 1TB disk space SD card support dual sim not hybrid one. Triluminious display from Sony. 64 Mpix image sensor from Samsung with 2 front and 6 cameras at back with NOkia 9 Pureview carl zeis optic with their image proccesing SW specialy made for Nokia 9, IP69 with MIL-STD 810G, 18K mAh battery from Energizer device 5 inch compact one handed design, LG best audio which they are famous for, 65W charging from Huawei, Gorrila Glass 6 on a Shapphire screen unscratchable at 8 or less mohs scale. Nokia 8 sirroco steel alloys for a maximum possible durrability a wireless charging the best possible, 3,5 jack, some kind of supercooling made for Nubia red magic 3 with fan inside,
    And many many else.
So if wwe take all the best from all phone brands and make just special phone it will cost maybe 2000 maybe 3000 but who would buy phone like this???
Almost noone. So its a complete waste thus i said K20 pro is a winner because for much less money they make almost perfect device.

On the camera side alone, the Sony is clearly better than the Sammy if you're looking for fine detail and accurate colors.

Look at the landscape shots on both: the far distance is an oil painting on the S10. It hasn't even attempted to break up those trees - and the colours are all over the place. True of much of the foliage on the S10: it's just not very good.

Snail shot main cam: not only ar the colour flat out awful on the S10 but look at the caslte in the background - all of the detail on the blue roofs is missing where the Sony retains it. The wrought iron fencing too looks like someone has painted it in on the Sammy.

Telephoto shots too: check out the clock face on the castle - The S10 recreates the makers mark on the clock as a simple smear. But it's writing. The Sony doesn't entirely recreate it but at least it attempts to break it up.

There's no question that the S10 has a slightly better DR (though, truthfully, it's not nearly as wide as I'd expected). But that's pretty much it - the Sony is better in daylight pretty much across the board. I'll take a little more noise for more detail and a realistic result any day of the week.

At night too: I'm suprised at how bad the S10 is, actually. And I'm going to disagree with GSMA on Sammy's Night Mode too: I don't think it is better than Sony's Auto. Third night shot - street view. Look at the shopfronts at the end of the road. Even in night mode, the S10 isn't pulling in as much detail as the Sony. Not even close. The Sofia Ring image too: look at the curb towards the bottom left - a barely coherent smear on the Samsung but a defined construction on the Sony, even without a dedicated night mode. Look at the blue Plovdiv road sign on the left - clearly less defined on the Samsung.

There are some advantages with DR but niether sharpness or detail are better than the X1 is producing.

So that's my camera take, for what it is.

As to the rest: Screen is clearly better on the Xperia. Having watched some HDR 4k on Netflix and Youtube on the thing, there's no question that this is a superior screen - colour accurate, sharp, balanced: just a joy to look at - and I'm a big fan of the aspect ratio too. And I didn't think I'd take to it.

As for the rest: much of a muchness. I can get a good day of use from the Sony and that's as much as you can ask for. Stereo speakers are plenty loud and there's very good separation between the two. I've yet to find a problem with the fingerprint reader. Works fine for me.

My twopenneth: if you want the better camera and screen, you get the Sony. For me, those were my two USPs. Couldn't be happier with my choice.

Seeing all the photos in detail with zooming, the Xperia 1 in daylight with all 3 lenses give much better detail and color accurary than the S10+, The S10+ has a oil painting kind of effect which some people likes but it diminish details, The HDR is better in S10+ though, the sony handle lows quite good but samsung handles highlight much better.....

The low light photos in normal mode with main camera is better in Xperia 1, again it gives better detail and accuracy... But the Night mode in the S10+ really gives it a upper hand... Although you shouldn't forget the Xperia 1 has 30 second shutter speed in manual mode which can give DSLR like light trail effects....
In wide angle lens too Xperia 1 gives better detail but the S10+ controls the highlights better..... Night mode is superior...
In the telephoto lens S10+ fares much better than the other 2 lens.... They are almost similar here....

In the portrait mode S10+ is just way better, The edge detection in Xperia 1 is way off and S10+ main camera lens is off too.... The S10+ portraits are much better...
Same is true about bokeh, Xperia 1 bokeh is really a hit and miss most of the times but the blurring effect if done right is really pleasing... Main camea of S10+ don't do much better but portraits are excellent in S10+

In the selfies, Xperia 1 does really good and gives better details and color overall even with 1 lens but in the selfie portraits, it just gets blown away buy the dual camera of the S10+

Well. that is just my personal evaluation after seeing the pictures posted here in detail, Thanks

Nick Tagataka, 18 Jun 2019That's false, S10 can also record video in Samsung's own HD... moreSmart HDR of iphone is just stacking for better exposure, same way done for photos.
                  There is no 10-bit colour.

Xperia 1 , you record 4K and watch on it 1s later.

I do not agree with the conclusion at all !

Galaxy was able to win or tie every single round.
Meanwhile, the Xperia has lost some rounds pretty badly, some of which are of crucial importance like:
                    - battery life
                    - audio features/quality

Saying they are just as good is a big stretch !

Nick Tagataka, 18 Jun 2019Performance is tied between S10+ and Xperia 1? Snapdragon 8... moreYou guys still believe that snapdragon 855 better than Exyonse 9820!. I used both and there’s no different in terms of performance actually Exyons 9820 runs even cooler than snapdragon 855 and camera used to be bad, since May security patch that comes with camera fixed for both snapdragon and Exyons variant S10 plus that using ISOCELL Samsung in house sensor just as good as snapdragon IMX Sony sensor if not even better in some area.

                      https://youtu.be/LOkNCeEuAz0 S10 Exyons vs mi9 snapdragon 855

Just look at 1:56 and see how’s performance of snapdragon drops and start overheating, yeah the video in Thai, but shows how’s snapdragon Soc are weak especially CPU that throttling with heavy usage.

Smartphone vs Smart-remote.. your choice!! For me, I would be ashamed to put that xperia in my hand out in public. It looks hideous.

I'm not going to say that it makes a full difference but when I moved my microSD card in the Xperia1 from my Note8, looking at the same pictures but on the Xperia 1 they have more details which are visible with the naked eye.

WTF? "but there's a dongle to help with that (better)" when dongles where good? it is one more point to break!
"complain about the curved sides leading to unwanted touchscreen operation" this is a real and accountable complain!

Performance is tied between S10+ and Xperia 1? Snapdragon 855 inside Xperia trounces crappy Exynos SoC inside S10+ any day. But apart from that, I pretty much agree with GSMArena's evaluation.

-Galaxy is a better phone for most consumers, because it basically covers everything most people need. You get a class-leading display, great battery life, versatile cameras with decent photo/video quality, great speakers, quality 3.5mm jack output and flagship-level(if not the best) performance. I hate One UI's cartoonish look and general choppiness in UI animations but I bet most people won't have any issue with it.

-Xperia is also a very versatile phone, but appeals to more niche market. 4K OLED display has an excellent quality but shows its superiority to Galaxy's when you watch the video. Battery life is ok-ish but not great, and so are speakers and audio output from the included dongle. UI is clean and smooth if it won't slow down over time like previous Sony phones did, the performance is clearly better on Xperia, and its cameras are just as good as ones you can find on Galaxy but substantially superior when you shoot videos in low light. CineAlta app comes preinstalled in the device, in case you're very enthusiastic about mobile cinema videography.

Here's the thing though - Snapdragon version of S10+ comes with significantly better cameras, CPU & GPU performance, battery life and DAC than the Exynos one which makes it absolutely the best Android smartphone available right now. At this point it's really hard to recommend any other highend Android smartphones because it's SO close to perfect. So if you live in US, China or Japan, where Samsung sells you the Snapdragon S10+, there's not much point of getting Xperia 1 over it unless you really want that 4K resolution display especially when they are priced roughly the same.

                                  Xperia is better

With that said, HDR videos on both devices are absolutely useless since neither formats have any compatibility whatsoever on most displays on the market right now and look absolutely trash without color grading on a professional monitor. This is why iPhone XS' "HDR" video is recorded in SDR format - you can enjoy extended dynamic range and wider color space on ANY displays.
