Anonymous, 01 Dec 2019If other flagship phones (even budget phones) didn't break ... moreCorrect. It's also expensive. Not worth paying the price for a budget-like phone. Depending on your region, iPhone 11 is cheaper. Chinese OEMs even cheaper and better. And unfortunately the Pixel 3a is still too expensive and below par other than the camera, remember the Xiaomis

I forgot to say that Adobe doesn't support Pixel 3a dng files, so they are very desaturated. But Adobe supported Nexus 5x dng files. It shows that Google doesn't try to achieve the best camera experience anymore, otherwise they would make sure that the dng files are supported. The Pixel 4 had a similar issue in the first week after its release.

I bought the Pixel 3a because the Pixel 4's camera is so disappointing (bad white balance, no white balance presets, purple shadows, portrait mode can't be used with the second camera, no 1.85x zoom button, etc). But even the camera of the Pixel 3a is disappointing. I compared the camera of the Pixel 3a with the fantastic camera of the Google Nexus 5x in HDR+ On mode, these are my first impressions:
Pixel 3a's default mode has slightly worse image quality than Nexus 5x HDR+ On mode: slightly more blown out highlights, much worse auto white balance and maybe even slightly less details. The low light autofocus is also much worse and in extreme low-light conditions the Nexus 5x HDR+ On photos can be noticeably brighter than Pixel 3a HDR+ photos, the preview is also much brighter, so you can see where you focus on.
Pixel 3a's HDR+ enhanced mode can have slightly less blown out highlights than the Nexus, but the white balance is still much worse under tungsten light, Night Sight has the same terrible white balance. And when you update the Pixel 3a, Google removes the white balance presets, which the Nexus has.
Apart from the disadvantages the Pixel 3a's camera also has a few advantages: The advantages of a Pixel 3a camera over the Nexus 5x camera are a zero shutter lag HDR+ mode, a noticeably better low-light zoom, a better portrait mode and more low light details in Night Sight mode (if Night Sight can focus and if the white balance isn't unusable).

Battery life sucks, overall system performance is average, storage is small, charging is relatively slow, face recognition is serious security flaw, lack of finger print reader.
There are no real advantages besides camera.
To me that all that is not good enough to be considered best phone.

Google definitely needs to bring back the white balance presets!

Given the price and battery life I am not sure how you can give the phone 4 stars

Google simply capitalizing on Pixel user experience and regular software updates by providing below par hardware.

Things that these "tech experts" never mention in their reviews:

                  - On Iphone11pro wide angle mode looked soft af on the edges, like a lump of mess. Distortion was really bad and much work for post (perspective correction) to make the picture usable. Very limited use case.
                  - on some phone (like iphone), nightmode is automatically triggered (no option to enable/disable), therefore camera comparison is not fair as they are not shot in same mode.
                  - PX4 is not in the same ballpark as Iphone11. It's in the same ground as Iphone11pro. You have to go back to primary school to learn math if you think the pro has better value, its back replacement cost half the price of a new iphone.
                  - Cheap china phones' hardwares degrade quickly overtime, lag becomes noticable in less than a year of usage. RAM management is poor (thus the need for much more ram). You have to use work around to get their android versions updated. Hell do they even get updated at all? Even Samsung is notorious for not bringing new android to its older devices.
                  - Bad battery life when comparing this phone to a Note. Of course the result would swing in favor of a larger battery capacity phone. Ideally they should compare exact battery capacity phones. No hard science.
                  - For this review particularly forced 90hz was on, that is not a fair comparison.
                  - SOT is a very poor gauge of battery endurance. I could get 6-7hrs sot from reading but only 2hrs from GPS gaming with the same phone.
                  - Google promises 2yrs of guaranteed software update and in reality it's more like 4yrs on average. That's 4 yrs of usefulness, count your roi.

Ultimately I wish to protect our interest as consumer. What I can see is a coordinated attack of tech reviewers on a perfectly fine phone. There are too many brain washings for us to get things that we don't need. Quadruple camera? Ultra resolution screen? Overkilled battery life?

A beautiful phone, but be aware that her battery life is below what I thought it would be. Not bad but just ok. which tells me that the Pixel 4 will be a train wreck. Seriously lousy from the Pixel. I feel sorry for those that buy one, not being aware of this massive fail.

Thank you for reviewing the small Pixel 4 since you didn't review the Pixel 3 last year. Very disappointing. I'm glad I got a Pixel 3a this black friday. No regrets.

Plus detail captured is unparalleled. You get Dslr likes natural bokeh to all photos something that other phones fail to do coz of smaller sensor. Suttle little things that make it the best camera. Ultrawide and zoom cameras need improvement.

I owned every one starting with Nexus l... moreI have also been using the Pixel line for awhile now and I gotta say while the refresh rate is a good upgrade it would have been much nicer if we had more storage and more memory. If with Google storage 64 gb is kinda 2016 standards. The baseline should be 128 - 500 gb storage and 8 - 12 gb memory. I really hope Google has these kinda specs next year, I'm kinda thinking about making the switch to the iPhone. Pixel should have had 6 gb of memory at the Pixel 2/ Pixel 2 XL.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2019Dual exposure should get more credit than it is been given.... moreThe feature works quite badly because Google doesn't adjust the exposure time when you adjust the shadows. So the shadows can be very noisy in average light conditions. Otherwise this is a great feature indeed. You can underexpose for getting more highlights and then adjust the shadows. Some camera manufacturers already offer similar things like Sony's DRO or Fuji's shadows setting, but they don't give you a slider. Furthermore apparently Google makes sure that boosting the shadows doesn't make the image lack contrast or look artificial.

Battery life is a disaster. After 6 months of usage it will hold 2-3 hours screen time on one charge. Disaster!
