"The periscope lenses that will fit in a smartphone can't be made overly bright, so taking zoomed-in photos in the dark isn't a guaranteed success"

Gcam will take care of this.
Yes you can on the S20 Ultra but not on the Huawei.

Whackcar, 26 Feb 2020Youtube is NOT a good place for authentic product reviews. ... moreYou don't like paid reviewers, only professional dittos? They're both getting paid to do the same thing. They both rely on income from the same ad sources. Professional means paid.

IpsDisplay, 26 Feb 2020That's a bit of a stretch saying that YouTube is "just" for... moreI like MrMobile because he doesn't do paid reviews. He isn't a "pro" reviewer, but makes valid points nonetheless. That's respectable IMO.

When i want professional opinion, i look at individual websites which are dedicated to discussing the content in question.

IMO, Youtube is not a good source of information, as anyone with a channel can share their personal opinion as a fact, which in turn will misguide the viewer.

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2020S20 has more details. Look at the red and silver car plates... moreI think you can not see the difference of alloy wheels in shadow. Even in shadow P30 Pro can capture exactly what our eye can see. Talking about number plates in highlights is not that clear as S20 ultra. Basically my point is only that P30 Pro is quite cheaper than S20 Ultra and this so called Nona binning and 100x zoom and bla bla is not a part of P30 Pro. But tell me how much improvement you can see in S20 Ultra over P30 Pro and note 10+ or Mi note 10? But you can definitely see 30 to 50% of improvement in price :)

The sample images once again show how ineffective Quad Bayer / Nona Bayer sensors are regarding the resolution. There isn't a huge advantage over the 27 megapixel Xiaomi Bayer output. An approximately 50 megapixel traditional Bayer sensor will perform better than those 108 megapixel sensors regarding the resolution.

Mr mobile is possibly the worse example you could have ever given as a credible parallel to this website

Techtablets on YouTube is a far more appropriate and credible reviewer

            YouTube is just a medium....

There are indeed slightly more details at 10x or 30x than at 4x. It seems that Samsung uses some data of the 48 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor in order to improve the image quality.

Kendra Shields, 26 Feb 2020Very well said. It seems like Samsung has dropped the ball ... moreYep. For most people, S20/S20+ would be a better deal, as they'll give the same quality images as the Ultra & save them some money. Difference will only show while long-range zooming, which the average consumer doesn't care about.

I really think Samsung should've went with a Quad-Bayer sensor like Xiaomi, so that it would give them resolution advantage (and hence more resolved detail) over their competitors.

Matt, 26 Feb 2020Let's be clear, the only people who need concern themselves... moreCouldn't agree more. The S20 series needs a re-working of the photo and video algorithms, to really improve things. The hardware is there, and rh software needs refinement.

Samsung did it with its night mode. It will do it again with the S20 Series. They just need to hurry it up.

The phone is totally overpriced as well.

Would like to see a comparison with the S20 64 megapixel mode. The S20 has a Bayer sensor, therefore the 64 megapixel mode will likely achieve better results than the 108 megapixel mode of the Ultra.

Typical Samsung processing that take years to refine. Note 10 with SONY's sensor is giving better results in certain situations.

Check out Danny Winget's S20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max camera comparison videos on YouTube. He have multiple videos out now and view it in 4K. iPhone beats Ultra in most situation using the main camera and loses in front, zoom, and ultra-wide.

I'm really starting to wonder and feel if sometimes less is more.

Rather than have a very high mp count, I would rather have a lower one, with more detail, clarity and depth of colour than a headline grabbing high mp count which is to say the least misleading.

You cannot achieve the same quality of photo as you can with a decent DSLR, not for now or the foreseeable future at least.

So just cut the headline grabbing rubbish, improve the optical system and bring things back to reality, with no silly gimmicks, just a good all round camera and decent phone.

[deleted post]Youtube is NOT a good place for authentic product reviews. Aside from some credible reviewers like "MrMobile", most Youtubers are paid lackeys who do sponsored reviews. They also lack any credentials to back up their statements, and in reality are just your average Joes & Janes who don't know the technical details nearly as well as proper reviewers like the ones on Gsmarena.

Those of us who know better will always choose professional reviewers with proper technical knowledge & credentials to review products for us. Youtube is just good for entertainment. Nothing more.

S20 Ultra price 1400 USD! Xiaomi Note 10 PRO price 500 USD. Huawei P30 PRO current price 700 USD. Is S20 Ultra 2x better batter than P30 PRO or almost 3x better than Xiaomi Note 10 PRO? In my opinion definitively not. People buying camera centric phone does not need to spend 1400 USD on S20 Ultra, both Huawei P30 PRO and Xiaomi Note 10 PRO provide better camera value. Of course S20 Ultra is not just camera.

The high res periscope camera is good but the main one not so much in daylight but lets see its magic in low light

"nowhere near what the difference in sensor size would have you expect (1/2" vs. 1/4")"
It's not 30.7mm² vs 10mm². Samsung needs to crop the periscope camera more, therefore it's 18mm² vs 10mm² at 135mm.

I would like to see a comparison of low light zoom between Mi Note 10 and S20U since the zoom lenses in the Xiaomi have f2.0 aperture.
                                      Thank you.

"At 5x the tables turn, as this is the Huawei lens' sort of native zoom level"
Has nothing to do with the "native" zoom level. If Samsung's lens is sharp, it should have as many details as Huawei (due to 12 megapixels at 103mm) unless Huawei uses better noise reduction and super resolution algorithms. Regarding the hardware specifications Samsung should be as good as Huawei or even better at 135mm.
