LG V60 ThinQ 5G review

19 April 2020
While we were all expecting a successor to the G8, LG instead announced a successor to the V50. The LG V60 ThinQ 5G is the latest fully featured flagship smartphone from Samsung’s Korean rival. LG doesn’t go quite as hard with the spec sheet as others like Samsung and Oppo, but it also doesn’t go as hard with the price point.

I think LG workers lost their way 5 years ago.

TimApple, 20 Apr 2020Nah, they're perfectly fine provided you get a decent pair ... moreStop spreading misinformation.

Apple intentionally stopped including analogue 3.5 mm audio jacks on their devices, as they found a way to earn more revenue by selling 3.5 mm audio adapter dongles and headphones. May I put this to light that Apple was the first manufacturer which started including the 3.5 mm audio jacks on their iPhones a decade back and claimed they are following a revenue free universal standard where you plug in ANY headphone.

Apple has a closed loop eco-system, they earn from every third party that manufactures accessory for their proprietary products. And this includes any kind of adapters & headphones to their devices having proprietary ports. You have to understand the bigger picture. Apple, Samsung, Sony, Oneplus, Huawei or for the name any manufacturer are here to do business. They will take every measure possible to earn more revenue from their customer.

Any audio enthusiast or an audiophile will laugh at anybody who says 3.5 mm audio jack is obsolete. Because they understand audio and seen $10,000 audio equipment that outputs through the 3.5 mm or quarter inch audio jacks connected to $5000 over-the-ear audiophile-grade open-back headphones. Audio is analogue, because human ears are analogue and hence the audio jack is analogue.

The question you may very well ask, why other manufactures are following the same trend? Well because they now understand there is a new scope to earn more revenue and they are following this trend my making their own branded dongles and stuff. For example Meizu now have their own audio dongle which you now need to buy for their flagships like Meizu 16s or Meizu 16s Pro. They are all forcing the customer and earning more revenue. A valid and very effective business model.

The next question is, why all these manufacturers except Apple are not doing this for their mid range devices? Well bcoz removing the 3.5 mm audio jack on their mid-range devices will turn off their specific group of "cash cow" customers who are very price sensitive and not willing to pay an extra $20 for a cheap audio dongle. These customers have 50 other options to buy a phone with 3.5 mm audio jack and they will rather choose those.

This very well cements the fact that till today their is a HUGE demand for 3.5 mm audio jack. Hence all manufactures are currently targeting to fool the deep pocket buyers who are ready to pay $1000 for their flagship phone and won't not mind shelling $50 more for the dongle or pay $100 for each of the low quality headphones with their own brand names. Or in case of Apple, demand money to the manufacturer of such headphone & dongles.

In the end it's all about doing business.

you guys are the best. So far everyone saying qhd screen is useless, a waste of battery power and such. Now everyone wants it as a compulsory feature. Come on, we're talking about 6-7 inches phones not home tvs

Anonymous, 20 Apr 2020Strong Competitor for budget flagship of the Year. Only co... moreYeah, not even close. Much bigger sensor, two-way wireless charging, 120Hz, GG6... 865 alone is allegedly $100 more expensive while the price increase over the 7T Pro is around $150.

And first of all, if you're calling Mi10 Pro "budget flagship" , then 8 Pro is budget too. Both of them are priced reasonably only in China.

Also, to be called the best in any category, shouldn't a phone be global? I love the V60, but 6.5 billion people will never get to buy it.

Please later add it to the photo compare tool

It can use an active wacom stylus with options like the Note series. The only thing is you can't put the stylus in the phone so you have to carry it seperately and try not to lose it. But it is possible, not all phones can do that.

Alao a lot of smartphones don't have qHD anymore.

TimApple, 20 Apr 2020Nah, they're perfectly fine provided you get a decent pair ... moreI don't think you have any idea what you are talking about. Someone with Apple in its nice name talking about AptX and forgetting to mention LL mode... Jack size whose never a problem, the implementation quality is open for discussion. USB "pasive" pass trogh? Either you use passive dongle which relies on integrated DAC & Amp & OS chain (Android usb audio 1.1) or active one with its own DAC and amp with either default or costume driver while pass trogh is possible only for DSD in direct mode & with some costume drivers choosing direct raw output for PCM, usually this is referred as bit perfect.
It's your chance what you like or prefer but people need to have a chance. I am not ready to let go either wire's or headaphone jack one way or another.

Fearghast, 20 Apr 2020"The whole world besides Europe will be getting Exynos vers... moreOh, so even the Europe would get the Exynos?
It only makes the best version of Samsung much more limited, then!
The fact that you've said it made my claims even more applicable in reality, with less people having access to Snapdragon versions.
Anyway at least you're admitting that their own chipset is worse.
Good for providing source of facts, so thumbs up for that. Should I say thank you for correcting me? Maybe, I think it'll help lower your ego per say.

In what way did I exactly point out that Sony phones are better because Samsung phones are worse?
Well obviously that would be the case when we compare the two. All I was pointing out the whole time is that the Xperia 1 Mk II wouldn't exactly be the best phone of 2020, but it certainly wouldn't be as bad-performing as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which is absolutely horrible for a modern day flagship phone costing over $1400 from a very reputable brand as big as Samsung.
Delay to official release is caused by the pandemic, and also because they're preparing the phone to be more polished before the first release, unlike Samsung which made the autofocus more reliable only after it gets publicly released.
Though I have to say that I'm also irritated by this common habit of Sony in releasing flagships in the first half of the year.

Anonymous, 20 Apr 2020How about: No bashing - deliberately and repeatedly bashin... moreBashing and criticizing are exactly two different things.
I'm doing the latter because for real, there are true evidences that back up my claim. In contrast, all that you're trying to do is bashing because you don't even have any scientific data or experiment to prove such claims, so it's pretty pointless to even argue with people like you. Be glad I'm not doing anything much this quarantine so I'm wasting my time explaining basic things to you. The fact that my comments even bothers you so much makes me a happy entertainer for knowledge for myself.

Trolling is everywhere. Not all trolls are blocked by GSMArena, but I'm certainly not trolling at all. Again, how can it be like that when everything that I'm saying is actually backed up by countless facts based on real life testings and real users' experiences?
Maybe it's you who's trolling. You were saying something that absolutely makes no sense right from the start, but also gettin' mad when I speak real stuff.

Why would I be guilty of those things? Don't call me wrong doings that you're doing yourself. You put light on me for being a troll in order to put attention to me because apparently it's you who's trolling.
I've pretty much said many things similarly on this page, and there were people who responded much nicer and more intellectually and sensibly than you're doing. Bring back those people so I can actually have a meaningful discussion and not waste time to trolls like you.

Ofcourse the Xperia 1 Mk II isn't out yet, but I'm solely depending on the specsheet alone, but given Sony's track record of making smartphones, there's absolutely no doubt this new one would also be a brilliant device that's closest to perfection, as far as quality and versatility goes.
Well again, why am I saying this again? You wouldn't listen and get it anyway, so good luck trying to find the attention that you've been needing badly in your whole life.

Anyway, the slim form factor of 21:9 allows it to be held easily with one hand.
If you're not happy, then move the f- on.
I also hate your nonsense screen cutout, but I never wished nor asked for it to burn in hell, so yeah, just shut up.

People who have never used true wireless headphones shouldn't be allowed to make comments about them. 3.5mm has no place on a modern phone, it's a waste of precious space that's better used for haptics of battery. 3.5mm on a desktop or notebook computer is perfectly fine where space is apt but not on mobile. Not to mention that it's extremely redundant given that USB-C audio passthrough exists - just get a passive adapter and you still have the same quality on your wired headphones.

3.5mm is gone and good riddance.

Dont get LG phones!!! I muself have one. Phones are great maybe for the 1st 6 months of buying coz after that you fall way back in the software segment. I have got the Vseries and though android 9.0 came out 2 years ago, I still haven't seen the light of it yet. Pathetic customer service who keeps on blaming 3rd parties for the delay in bringing it out, when all other vendors have moved on to android 10.0. They touted some unknown global software development centre which is all a gimmick.
No wonder they continue to post losses in their mobile segment as people who already own a LG phone will never order another one or recommend to another.
SO STAY AWAY GROM LG PHONES

No, bud, the reason a lot of people refuse to give up the headphone jack isn't just quality. Buds are annoying to deal with, the quality does suck, and there's tons of latency so you can't play games very well on the phone with audio seconds behind.

Bluetooth and AAC suck, that's why we stay to the jack.

I'll not be long and try to make it short...As years of using iPhone and then switching to Android... I had great experiences with old LGs and specially OnePlus (but to be honest camera set up was always more or less a miss). Now that Huawei has ban from Google (also HONOR = best value performer), I'm happy to see LG is back. This phone gives you most important features FIRST. Great battery, Solid screen (and best is that IT'S FLATT), great overall audio experience, best processor and it's not overpriced. So as I'm from EU and I use a lot Google services and I don't like other generic Chinese products (XIAOMI, VIVO, OPPO,...and as I said OnePlus lost me when turned back to loyal comunity!!!), I'm left to either LG or Sammy. But Samsung cheats Europeans with it's own EXYNOS instead of Qualcom's BEST!?!?!?! In my opinion I was first shocked when LG left out some of features, but then after a while, they did BEST compromise and deserve to BE BACK. LG just PLEASE improve your UPDATE policy AND I'm absolutely sure you'll surpass competitors (only decent is left of Google = HUAWEI / HONOR).
