LG V60 ThinQ 5G review

19 April 2020
While we were all expecting a successor to the G8, LG instead announced a successor to the V50. The LG V60 ThinQ 5G is the latest fully featured flagship smartphone from Samsung’s Korean rival. LG doesn’t go quite as hard with the spec sheet as others like Samsung and Oppo, but it also doesn’t go as hard with the price point.

I feel that the whole tech world don't NO what they are talking about, if a phone is lacking in addition to screen or camera specs. Its a lower speced phone to all the competition.WHAT NONSENSE LG , HAS EQUALLY As much functionality at Samsung, more than oppo or One plus and Apple. But due to it not being popular its not counted.every manufacturers stands out in something.no brand is good at everything.Thats a fair comment or narrative that should be pushed. LG HAS A HEADPHONE JACK, WITH EXTRA AUDIO FEATURES. IT HAS MANUEL VIDEO, IT HAS WIRELESS FAST CHARGING, IT HAS 8K MANUEL MODE, PLUS EXTRAS. Now Samsung and oneplus or apple are lacking in some of these these features, yet they are counted to have more due to what a smoother screen experience and a 2k display, which LG pioneered.Look I'm not brand loyal, but I like to give credit where its due Lgv60 has given users the 2 most important things when it comes to mobiles and that long battery life and good audio to hear people on the other end. Who cares about 120htz or 90htz.

I always wanted to experience this phone, but alas it never got released in India. However I am well versed with the sound signature of AKM's. I own a Vivo V5Plus with AKM AK4376 and they sound lush and sweet over the audio jack. Emphasis is always on low to mid-range but the overall balance throughout the entire audible frequency range is quite good. However they are not as accurate, clinical or precise as ESS ones found on LG's. AKM, Cirrus Logic, ESS each have their own style and I love them all.

I don't like the current three step gain output structure of LG's QuadDAC, as the first step on low impedance cans (< 50 ohms) sounds anemic. Not earphones mind you. Tricking the QuadDAC to the second step will provide meaty power.

On other hand I have seen over powering low impedance headphones can provide detrimental effects to over all sound quality. Hence I prefer the 2 step gain used by Cirrus Logic in my Vivo NEX which provides the sweet spot of ample power to drive any proper headphone and you do not need to do any kind of trickery. Same for Axon 7.

Bluetooth headphones are no doubt far worse. People who don't understand audio, audio quality & audio technology always speaks about BT headphones are the way to go. Yes for convenience factor BT headphones are ok, but not critical listening.

Can they make it a bit smaller with 4500mah battery? This is quite big. And how about updates in India...they suck at that

Besides, I'd rather have a 3k panel pushing 1200 nits than a useless dim 4k panel.
Oled burn in happens not coz of higher brightness, it happens on cheaply made oleds after the pixels are static for too long(unrealistic in the real world).

SD865 may not support 4k@120hz but it can support 3k@120hz or even 1080p@120hz.
Why Sony not giving that option to the user? All I see are excuses after excuses made by Sony fans.

3x optical zoom that they provide on Sony is useless. Same result can be obtained by cropping from Main sensor on other higher megapixel cameras.
When I say periscope zoom, I'm talking about 5x,10x optical zoom which is standard for 2020 flagships and is super useful. Portraits aren't the only thing you shoot using telephoto lens.
S20 ultra is the current zoom champ. Great pics thru telephoto lens (day or night) without any compromises. Extremely useful during videos as well without losing that great image quality.

"Chinese brands use two batteries to charge faster"
          >> So? End result is faster charging without the associated heat of 65W charger.
Besides, Only Oppo using two batteries, rest are using single batteries.

" It is proven faster charging will decrease life span"
          >>That is true only if excessive heat is generated.
Learn how VOOC and other technologies work. Chinese brands way ahead in this department. VOOC keeps heat away even when charging and using your phone. Sony Quick charge is different tech and is inferior to proprietary Chinese fast charging tech.

          https://www.androidauthority.com/vooc-fast-charging-686000/

While companies like Xiaomi using better batteries with more charge cycles despite faster Watt charging, while Sony choosing regular and smaller batteries which eventually end up consuming more charge cycles and start degradation after 300-400 charge cycles.

Sony simply charging more for bigger profit margins.

If the cameras are much better than Xperia 1/5 ... and they should be - they are using better chips and better glass ... I would be more than willing to shill said amount of money for a phone with 60Hz display, (I don't care for 4K on 6,5" screen, nor do I care for 60+Hz on my personal phone), headphone jack (even typical low Sony quality), improved mics over 1/5, bigger battery etc.
Why? It does not have a notch, I like Sony speakers, I like their colour balance and the way they are implementing noise reduction, I like it has SD card slot, headphone jack etc. the only thing it is missing in my eyes is a propper desktop mode, BUT considering the quality of Sony software it could actualy be better that way.
Sonys phones are not a good deal to many users and I feel this year It will be even more apparent.

Anonymous, 21 Apr 2020Sony is cutting a lot of corners too. Dim panel, lack of h... moreXperia 1 has 689 nits. Lower pixel density makes easier for the company to increase brightness. Dont ever expect a 4K phone to boost 900 nits under sunlight. Also more brightness for oled brings burn -in sooner. It is not like LCD that you can use 100% brightness all the time without screen being damaged. Sony brought to CES2018 a panel with 10.000 nits, something will never seen for oled.
Xperia Compacts HD screen always had more brightness than bigger versions.

SD865 does not support more than 60Hz for 4K. Pointless to unlock the 120Hz mode if it cant be used with 4K. Weird that until fev/2019 none felt bothered by 60Hz, now everybody is.

Periscope. What if you want shorter focal length? Will you crop from main camera like Samsung and LG? 3x digital zoom makes resolution drops to 1/9, which means Xperia would have a 1,33MP quality at 72mm equivalent if it had a periscope. Also portraits will have distortion of wide angle lens.

OP has access to R&D from Vivo and Oppo. It makes things way cheaper.

Chinese brands use two batteries to charge faster. Two batteries with 30W, not one with 60W. It is proven faster charging will decrease life spam. Impossible for your phone to have 97% after 12 months if you use 30, 40 or 60W. You will be lucky if your battery has 85%. Otherwise all companies would be using more than 30. Any company that makes electronics is able to use if they want too.

Not cheap to bring ppl from Alpha, Cinealta, Sony Pictures and Sony Music to work on the phone. Nor to create from zero the mobile version of software with features from other electronics (tv, cameras, video cameras and walkman) ..

Be sure OP8 Pro costs less to be made.

RishiGuru, 20 Apr 2020You are correct it is the op-amps that sit between the DAC ... moreAn "op-amp" is simply a term for a generic "operational amplifier" where the output is the difference between two inputs multiplied by nearly infinity. It's an analog computational component. There are trade-offs between gain, power consumption, frequency response, and distortion even at audio frequencies a millionth of the chip's rated frequency. This is why cellphone outputs are always slightly off from perfect. They're usually still very good. The most common problem is that the output voltage is too low for high impedance headphones or the output impedance is too high for low impedance headphones. The old Axon 7 had a software switch for this, but the correct use of it was lost in misleading marketing gibberish.

Bluetooth headphones are far worse. They have an extremely low power budget and there's still no lossless Bluetooth audio codec.

USB-C amplifiers can be better if they're externally powered. All trade-offs related to power consumption and size go away.

Multiple camera setups that include macro cameras and depth sensors don't provide much utility. Multiple camera setups that include a telephoto and ultrawide provide superior utility as they give the user 3 focal lengths as opposed to just 1.

Beware that these are carrier-locked phones with carrier locked cell radios. If you check the specifications for the T-Mobile LG V60, you'll see that it will work poorly, if at all, outside of North America. This is especially dumb because T-Mobile is the roaming-friendly telco you'd have if you travel.

ESS didn't made anything costume nor gave discount even to it's own mother. They didn't even help their biggest OEM partners in resolving ESS hump. The ES9218KM2 is basically slightly (if at all) improved ES9028KM2 with integrated in the same IC the SABRE9601K alike amplifier with a tad lower output power. SABRE9601 is very good Amp but it's only enough to drive 64 Ohms cans satisfactory (not ideally) enough. There are discrete portable amplifiers that can drive most 300 Ohm's can's satisfactory for instance Topping NX3S will deliver 78 mW @ 300 Ohm's.

Th... moreYou are correct it is the op-amps that sit between the DAC and the audio jack which gives the distinctive sound signature of the device. The general trend I have seen is to use three of them (Vivo NEX S, Lenovo Vibe X3) one for I/V conversion and then the next two to amplify the analog signal one per channel to the 3.5 mm audio jack. This discrete audio solution I have seen provides reasonable drive to power upto 60 ohms to the max. Other older solutions like my Vivo X5Max uses just one op-amp for amplification hence less drive. What I mostly think ESS made a custom for one chip IC solution for LG with integrated DAC + I/V conversion + power amplifier. Correct me if i am wrong.
