So basically it is heavy, throttles quite a lot under heavy load, has mediocre 120 Hertz support (yet), charges relatively slowly and it is way too expensive (and I think anyone agrees, it is pretty damn expensive, even for an iPhone).. For me there also are personal gripes with iOS as a whole and the simply awful new lens design for the camera. I guess it has the advantage of a lack in competition. And I'm unsure about the speakers "beating every potential direct rival", my ZenFone 8 has pretty amazing speakers after all.

    Cons:
"Stale looks, the notch should have been gone by now.
Compact as it may be, the 'small' 13 Pro weighs a lot.
120Hz refresh rate not widely available in third-party apps at launch.
Battery life not up to the Max's standard.
The chipset is prone to heavy throttling under max load.
The fast charging isn't very fast.
iOS (with its limitations) remains a love it or leave it affair"

    4.5 stars?
    What in the what what?

Nick Tegrataker, 15 Oct 2021Apple never advertised that they use machine learning for d... moreApple does use deep fusion, when night mode is not used in low light conditions. That's the case here.

Apple definitely guesses new (wrong) details in this image. Look at the holes and the hat of the person. Also, the leaves look extremely artificial. That's not due to interpolation. Interpolation leads to a blurry image when you use digital zoom. Traditional digital zoom would never show a person without a hat, if the person actually wears a hat. Instead it would produce a blurry image, where you can't really see whether the person wears a hat or does not. That's why traditional digital zoom is superior to machine learning zoom. I have a Pixel 3a and it sometimes can produce similar issues due to machine learning. The results can look terrible and can be worse than traditional digital zoom.

It's crazy. I thought that smartphone cameras would get better and better, so one doesn't need to buy a camera from Canon, etc, but such issues, which didn't really exist a few years ago, will make it impossible to use smartphone cameras for responsible journalism and in the end one will have to buy a camera from Nikon, Canon, etc, if one doesn't want the camera to guess completely new details that are wrong and aren't the result of interpolation.

In this image, Apple's deep fusion guesses new details, which are wrong and not even that small. So it produces a rather sharp image with wrong details. Traditional digital zoom doesn't do this. Traditional digital zoom just interpolates, which leads to a blurry image.

Such a great phone with stunning cameras, upgraded from 11 Pro and expected minor difference in photo quality, but got major upgrade for photos and video.

So happy that Apple now gave smaller one the same cameras than big brother.

While I can see some of Apple's typical oversharpening effect for daylight photos, it's actually not as severe as I would have thought. At least within the iPhone world, the photo quality has been improved from before. If I'm looking for any brand new 2021 smartphone solely based on the camera performance, I would consider this iPhone on my list. Just about the only thing that stops this iPhone from being a complete winner is the lowlight photos. It's not really my favourite.

""So, what if you're looking for a high-end phone that is also compact? It turns out your options aren't all that many""

Depend on what you mean by high-end...

There is something wrong with the JPEG / heic processing in the new 13 pro / pro max series. It looks overprocessed (which is normal in phone standards), yet lacking in details. Seems like a beta software.

We can see the iPhone 13 mini battery life peeking out ;-)

                                    IP rating?

Oh, that portrait feature for photos and videos are so painful to watch - so many glitches, even with all that "3D" ToF + huge yellow tint on selfie video.
Still, 13 is a decent upgrade compared to older iPhones. My friend is still rocking the abysmal iPhone X, so this upgrade seems like a reasonable one - he likes the iOS for some reason.
