famakate, 28 Oct 2021I don't think Juan Bagnell is a real photographer. htt... moreJuan is a real smartphone photographer, he even released books about it.
For that, you have to know your stuff about photography, not just point n click efforts, so I consider him a photographer.

famakate, 28 Oct 2021"And no, they are not gathering the same amount of lig... moreI don't understand why someone considers camera bumps as shortcoming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's the only way to get the best camera system in a smartphone without making the whole thing very thick. Big bumps, especially flat and wide ones, such as one the Mi 11 Ultra or Pixel 6 (Pro) also makes the phones tilt up towards you when lying flat on a table and doesn't cause wobble.
I see most people here put their 7-9mm phones into wallet flip covers making them 15-20mm thick anyways, and that's before loading them with cards. Some are probably over 3cm thick fully loaded :P
Very few use their device with no cover/case at all. So what difference does it make if the camera bump are makes it 10-12mm thick on the bump when the rest of the device is 7-9mm and the case evens out the bump? Rather that than a weak camera.

After watching some YT videos I feel like this device is more Video focused as these turn out actually pretty good. Photos are very comparable to other devices.

Its price is completely exaggerated. It's like the Sony Xperia Pro, I'd be curious how many phones have been sold.
In addition the photographs are just good, nothing more. The prices of the phones do not correspond at all to reality. This phone is just right for fans of the brand who want "full" sony equipment.

Marco M, 28 Oct 2021It's not properly used because they only use about 60%... more"And no, they are not gathering the same amount of light as if they used the whole sensor.

Aaah ok now i understand you. Yes you are right, but than it would not be the same sensor as in the rx100-7 anymore. But you are right to have a problem with that.
I would also like the whole 20Mpx sensor to be used or even better as you suggested, use 1-inch with 12Mpx resolution for even better sensitivity. But that is coming with the shortcoming of bigger bump.
Maybe they shouldn't market it as 1/inch sensor and actually on the german sony website there is not once mentioned 1-inch. Instead they use "sensor Type 1.0".

Tann Hauser, 27 Oct 2021Its ideal, for a smartphone limited physical space implemen... more"no difference in quality as to using the full sensor, just the end lower res outputs for photos,"
Lower resolution = lower quality . . .
If I take the shots from my 20.2MP, 1", RX100 and crop them to 12MP I get a worse photo. Duh!
Even if I physically move my location compared to the subject, so the framing matches as close as possible after crop, the photo still looks a lot worse, because I now have a lower quality photo with less detail.
And marketing for this device states 1" sensor and 12MP. If it had a 1" sensor at 12MP would have significantly larger pixels (3.17µm - which is 74.5% larger than the 2.4µm it has) and produce significantly better image quality.
Right now the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra boasts 36% larger pixels (2.8µm) on their 12.5MP 1/1.12" sensor in a thinner phone. . . So they have a smaller sensor onboard, but gets both the same resolution and larger pixels without being thicker.
In other words, Sony should have at least, as a bare minimum, been able to get 16MP out of the sensor and seeing as just how little processing they make in their camera software, that really shouldn't be an issue. It would still be misleading to call it 1", but at least 80% utilization is better than 60%
FYI the processing power of the RX100 lineup is garbage compared the SD888, so saying that limiting to 12MP is due to processing and autofocus point - Hah, No!

I really like this phones approach to photography, the design and the specs (shutter button, colour accurate display, headphone jack, sd card slot, no bezels, battery management, notification led, etc.), it’s a true flagship. But the pricing is way too high. It should be priced in the same range as the xperia 1III. The pro-1 offers the lens for more creative flexibility while the 1III offers an optical telephoto lens and a better all-round package. I don’t see a lot of difference between these two phones, just different use cases. This € 1.800,- are even more inflated, when you consider the short guaranteed update period of the device. When a premium price is asked, I expect a service better than the main market. If it would really use the whole 1 inch sensor and not just 60% and get at least the same promised updates as the pixel phones, I would consider it. But so it is a great but overpriced product, imho.

Anonymous, 27 Oct 2021 Let's make a survey..if the phone price drops to $800... moreProbably not. I like phones that can consistently shoot good-looking photos across a wide range of fields of view in auto, but also give me *decently* feature-packed manual mode as a safety net. I might actually enjoy shooting Xperia Pro-I, mainly while using the main camera, as it does seem to do a decent job in auto and I'm definitely a fan of its colour reproduction - but if X70 Pro+ or Mi 11 Ultra were also offered to me at the same price, I'd rather pick one from these two.

famakate, 27 Oct 2021Why do you think the sony 1-inch sensor isn't properly... moreIt's not properly used because they only use about 60% of it. So the whole 1 inch sensor is just non-sense when they use only about half of it. Again, the Mi 11 Ultra covers a significantly larger area with their lens and that phone is thinner . . . So better engineers at Xiaomi. But if all Sony had to do was actually make a camera bump, since this phone barely has one, to make better use of the sensor then they definitely should have done so.
And no, they are not gathering the same amount of light as if they used the whole sensor.
They are after all marketing this as a 12MP camera and a 1" sensor. If they had a 1" 12MP sensor, the pixels would be a lot bigger than the 2.4 ones that they now have. Not only that, even with the current sensor and utilizing the full 20MP of it and the same focal length it would yield better photos.
Imagine selling a mirrorless with a full frame sensor, but limit the software and lenses so that it only crops to APS-C. What a joke.
And just so you know, this is coming from someone with both RX100 and alpha cameras from Sony, as I think they make excellent cameras, just not in smartphones. This was so promising, and don't get me wrong, 2.4µm is still very good, but either give us the full 20 MP of the sensor or don't market it as 1". Such a wasted opportunity by Sony.
