Huawei P50 Pro hands-on review

I don't know why Google can't make reliable phones. I've had 2 and both died in year 2. It would help if they don't keep reinventing everytime and just fix and improve...

Man, those 2 circular camera housing looks really scary. It looks as if it watches your every move, when you lay it front first. Next model, the P60 will have an additional circular camera housing, making it 3 big circular housing on the back. Imagine what that would look like, just kidding.

Hi is the P50 pro going on sale in the UK?

Huawei has produced some of the finest flagships since the past few years. It's just sad to see them disappoint due to outside restrictions which they can't control...

I'm sure this phone excels in camera & battery life as usual on Huawei flagships, but It can't be denied that it isn't as perfect as their other flagships were...

Shui8, 28 Jan 2022Love the unique design, especially those black with a bit o... moreP50 Pro is good but it kind of seems like a downgrade compared to P40 Pro in some ways... I'm not even talking about 5G right now.

Still, I'm sure it would be leading in camera performance & battery life like all Huawei flagships.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2022The nova 9 has imx766. Also, the story of imx800 being 1&... moreIMX766 is a typical generic sensor. Sony dont have the license to customized new sensor for Huawei anymore.

IMX800 is 1" (as plan). The 1/1.18" one are IMX707, which rumored after the latter. And then it turns out 707 size is actually a 1/1.28".

My main interest in this phone is the camera, but I still don’t understand how Huawei outputs 27mm equivalent images from a 23mm lens, are they simply cropped and upscaled?

The other gripe of this phone for me is the weird screen resolution.

JiuJitsuHuitsu, 28 Jan 2022If P50 Pro would cost like $600 maybe, just maybe it's... moreErm , you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

Currently using a pixel 6 pro, basically the latest "flagship" phone you can get on Android and my actual p40 pro with hardware/features/interface beats my pixel hands down (to the point I'm looking to replace the pixel with a xiaomi mi 11 pro/Xiaomi 12/oppo x3 pro)

1st point, p40 pro doesn't have mis touch problems and Doesn't have software bugs like my stupidly buggy pixel 6 pro and mis touch problems like on OnePlus and Samsung (unless it's trying to use Google service apps which is a developer/not having Google services, screen still never has mis touches).

Has better security biometrics (it's still got the best of any android device and it's 2 years old), has a clearer, possibly best readable screen you can get (it's as clear as a kindle to read, makes my pixel with a 120hz QHD screen look washed out and it doesn't need 1800nits brightness like every other flagship to have that clarity).

Everyday usage/performance is THE EXACT SAME, literally loads apps and plays content at the same speed as my pixel 6 pro except the Kirin 990 has built in 5g modem for better power saving (also picks up quicker speeds on 4g and 5g when I shouldnt really be able to get 5g "operators website saying no 5g yet" in the town I live in, pixel 6 pro cant pick up 5g in the centre of a major city) you don't need the very fastest cores for 95% of all operations on a phone unless it's the most demanding game at QHD at 120hz.

Has better all round camera set up and performance with 2 IR TOF 3D sensors, 1 for selfie and 1 for the other cameras (which all of them have OIS, EIS, PDAF/omnidirectional PDAF and AF, most having atleast 2 of them including self cam which has AF, again almost all flagships out now including apple and my pixel 6 pro DONT INCLUDE ALL THIS FOR ALL CAMERAS. Plus the p40 pro still has some of the biggest sensor sizes for all cameras Vs all other phones including s21 ultra and iPhone 13 pro max for £1200+

Haven't even mentioned the magnetic speaker under the screen that produces clearest phone call sounds you can get on phones or the fact it's the easiest, most comfy phone I've ever held.

The selfie camera on P50 Pro does have autofocus. Only the P50 non Pro variant does not have autofocus for the selfie camera.

Dxomark says p50 pro has pdaf in selfie camera & now gsmarena is saying it's selfie camera is fixed focus?

marbles, 28 Jan 2022The Chinese version is already below 900 eurosThat's the one with Kirin 9000 chipset, isn't it?

The lowlight and daylight 10x zoom photos really don't impress me at all, but I do like the daylight main and 3.5x zoom photos a lot. I'm struggling to find any single oversharpened effect from the latter. This could be a worthy spiritual successor to the Nokia Lumia 1020 and also the Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL. That said, I'll wait for the full review to come in before I made my own personal verdict about this phone.

P.S The ultrawide camera also doesn't impress me at all, but I never care about it in the first place. It's more of a daily necessity rather than a photography plaything for me.

Terrible digital zoom image quality. It seems to ignore the 64 megapixel mode of the sensor and seems to use machine learning instead.
