"So, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first alternative that comes to mind. The 256GB flagship Galaxy costs as much and impresses with one really bright and large Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel and an integrated S-Pen. The S22 Ultra offers excellent photo and video quality across the board, and it has two tele cameras - one for 3x and another one for 10x optical zoom. Its rendering is not as natural as Sony's, but the Night Mode, the 10x high-quality optical zoom, the better portraits, and the 8K videos, among many other tricks, may tip the scales for mainstream users. Not everyone needs to shoot like a Pro with Pro-oriented apps, which takes away some of the features like 4K60 mode that other phones offer in their basic apps."
You basically explained why this phone doesn't make make much sense - except for a very small group of people who need to use the Pro app, S22 Ultra is basically a superior device in pretty much every aspect... Why such a high rating 4.4 then? Sometimes I feel like even reviewers are fanboying Sony a bit, I guess out of fear of Sony LG'ing itself...

You can downscale resolutions while keeping all your pixels lit.
No way this phone would pull 100h on the battery test with 4K @ 120hz.
4K is triggered by 4K content, that's it, and that's perfectly fine.
Most apps can't even run in 4K so 4K 24/7 wouldn't make sense.
You can have your 643PPi once you have content that can exploit them.

The phone is running in 2K all the time unless you trigger the upper resolution with 4K content. So it's not gonna eat-up all your mAh.

Sony doing their own thing as always.
In a world of ever-boring and lookalike devices, it can only work.

Tann Hauser, 11 May 2022Cause Sony cares more for Xperias battery health over years... moreThat's not the explanation. So Sony is advertising 30 W charging speed but actually charging slower than 25 W?

Always has been like that.

This sounds like a decent phone but at 1400 eur I can buy a52s for every member of my family instead.
Oh, wait, I just did that. Other than price this phone looks pretty nice. Except throttling.

Serious improvement in every single aspect of content creation, and media consumption.
And adding MusicPro is the main deal on this 1 here.
Love it!
Tho, not being a content creator, I always will be more satisfied with the 5 series performance/price offering.

How is S22 Ultra charging significantly faster at 25 W than Xperia 1 IV at 30 W?

The screen is always 4K, all the pixel are still lit, it's the rendering that varies depending on each app, and luckily, or else 3/4 of the screen would turn black if displaying a FHD content. And with a good upscaling software, a QHD image on a 4k screen can still appear more sharp than on a QHD screen thanks to the smaller pixels and smaller grid.

LOL, 11 May 2022Great hardware, terrible software and postprocessing, no ni... moreIf they did you would have the worst flagship that year. I left Xperia phones after the Xperia Z1 because of the overheating, easy chipable glass and a year behind anyone else in camera quality (one even just bricked itself while in use and wouldn't take sim cards anymore). Same for the 1st 4k screen xperia that my mate had, exact same issues.
I've currently got the pixel 6 pro and it's currently my 2nd worst phone ever with essentially same problems (also video and photo quality has been getting worse/unpredictable with each update to phone and camera app).
Your statement couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

Back in the Sony Ericsson days, they used to lead in camera quality (along with Nokia). Ever since they became Sony, they've been lagging behind in camera quality. The hardware was good, but their software processing wasn't great.
Then since the start of the Xperia 1/5 series, they've really made some solid improvements to their cameras (both hardware & software). And the improvements are significant this year. Xperia 1 IV (& 5 IV down the road) really provide some excellent 12MP photos all around. Yes the zoom photos could do with improvement, but you gotta credit them for experimenting with new tech instead of playing it safe.

If the camera performance is anything to go by like this, that will be my pick. As much as I love this particular phone, I still don't see the need for a 4K resolution on a smartphone screen.

In entertainment electronics and particularly in mobile phones, I support the only Japanese brand in Europe (Switzerland): Sony. I own the Sony Xperia 1 III and will immediately purchase the Sony Xperia 1 IV in purple or white as soon as it becomes available. I hope soon available. Congratulations Sony.

I think I might be upgrading this year, it's a solid phone and still has all the features I need. I'll wait to see if they release a 5 IV to make a decision.
