It has been done for years already.

This allows to keep cam module slimmer. Edges are cut, so portions of photos with lower quality (corners are never as good as center, no matter if lens is $5 or $15.000) go away.

    UltraHD, 31 Oct 2022I actually like Huawei Mate 50 Pro, the design is beautiful... moreThat gesture pill is another of my annoyances of Google pixel phones, you can't rid of it and it looks horrible in screenshots, whereas in Samsung, Huawei and other Android skins, you have the option to remove it.

    I understand lots of you like stock Android, but there are lots of missing features like clear all cache etc

      Brilliant phone all around. Looks very premium & Huawei is still nailing the camera performance as usual. I love the way their phones render foliage.

      I certainly hope Huawei keeps making phones & doesn't give up like LG & HTC did.

        Waiting for someone to complain about lacking GMS and lack of 5G (grin)

          I actually like Huawei Mate 50 Pro, the design is beautiful and new EMUI too. I just have one question, when will they add a gesture line at the bottom? Lol.

Photos are cut to match 27mm camera ... moreIt is much more than a simple crop, I believe they are using a multi frame technique similar to super res zoom that can near losslessly zoom into the frame to create a 27mm equivalent image, most reviewers don't seem to notice a loss in detail.

            A simple crop from 23 to 27mm of a 12.5mp image is 9mp and that loss of resolution should be very noticeable.

                  For me, despite the lack of Google services and other shortcomings, the main cameras 27mm focal length and variable aperture make it the most desirable phone for me.

                  I still long for a flat screen, and a normal screen resolution.

                  My biggest complaint of all today's flagships including apple now is that the main camera is excessively wide and the depth of field too shallow, this is the only flagship that addresses those issues. See the dxomark review that shows the importance of being able to stop down and get everyone in the frame in focus
