MrGrumpy, 13 Feb 2023The S23 is NOT a compact phone. Since when has a 6.1 screen... moreIn 2010. when all phones were between 2.8" and 4.0" screen size, 2.8" was considered compact as that was the smallest screen size available on the market. Except maybe for some Xperia Mini phones which were even smaller. In 2014. when all phones were between 4.3" and 5.5", the 4.3" was considered as compact. Do you see where am I going with this?
Compact phone is a phone which is the smallest on the market. So, in Android world that's Asus Zenfone 9 and Samsung Galaxy S23. For Apple, that's iPhone SE and 14 (and 14 Pro).
And no, those big devices will not be even bigger but compact phones could become bigger then now. Why? Because all those components inside the phone takes space and big battery and cooling and many other things that are just harder to implement in smaller case then In a bigger one.
I want more compact phones as well, but it seems you think there is some kind of a rule what is a compact phone and it should follow some dimensions to be a compact phone. No, in my opinion that's not the case. Because every hand is different and besides that people have their own preferences. We are not using our phones the same way. Some people want bigger phone because they don't use a computer, so they do EVERYTHING on phone. Literally everything.
Anyways, smaller more compact phone is harder to make then a bigger one. Everybody wants high preforming chip and good battery with some good set of camera. It's way harder to put all that in smaller case and hope for tempetatures to be in line with other bigger device who have more space inside the phone. That's the reason not many phones are in that "compact" line of offerings.
Have a nice day Grumpy. Great nickname btw.. lol

Wh... moreI've never tried to compare with the iPhone 12, but as ex S21 FE (Exynos) and S22 users, I can say the S23 is way better than S21 FE, especially in the video, night, and zoom modes. Compared with S22, S23 are noticeable improvements but not that big.

I've had a P20 P... moreI have to stop you there, some of what you saying is incorrect. firstly, Honor was a sub-brand of Huawei, who only recently got out of their big brothers shadow and are still trying to and as such can't be put up to same scrutiny as the other brands. Secondly the S23 designwise is basically an iPhone 8 back with a bigger main camera and two additional cameras and a hole punch AMOLED display. Thirdly if you see what Chinese are doing with their innovative ideas, it's really quite amazing and yes Huawei is the best out of the lot unfortunately (competed with Apple and Samsung in 2019, and if I remember kicked samsung out of their second spot for a second, just before they were suddenly banned), that's why even though there is really not a lot wrong with Samsung, a lot of people are against them I think, but honestly I think more than anything we miss the Samsung of old, that quirky phones such as the Camera galaxy and projector galaxy and whatever happened to their transparent phone patent?

The 5 series should be okay as it's actually about as tall as the S23+ (just looks super tall), and if the 1 V's rumors are true, it would become shorter than the S23 Ultra, which, for me, is still acceptable

Asus is perfect in size, but it lacks an extra camera and offers a much shorter support. So unless they match Samsung with years of updates this year, I'll have to skip it again.
I might go for pixel 8 this year, if they further reduce it in size and match S23.

I think having less than 12GB of RAM is also a major con for the S23 (though 8GB may be enough in some use cases in the long term), but I can tolerate this, so I'll still consider it.
Will also wait for a few other phones' release for me to decide which one to go for:
- Sony Xperia 1 V and 5 V (will consider the 5 V if their cameras become identical again)
- Asus Zenfone 10 (just wanna see if there'll be another wave of surprise for me)
- the already released S23 Ultra (bulk is an issue, but everything else delight me)
- iPhone 15 Pro (the largest size I can accept for iPhones, and the USB-C port means I no longer have to blacklist iPhones (finally!))
Still using the LG G8, so I will definitely have a new phone this year

im sure S24 will also be hardly an upgrade unless the battery goes 4500 mah in same form factor or they offer a headphone jack or an SD card slot. flop!

As an S21 owner I find the new S23 as an old solution. Same so-so OLED with distorted on the sun colors, smaller battery, strange lenses would be scratched in a month, ... absolutely nothing interesting.
Speaking of S21, it was another tweaked product deruved from S20.
So, frankly, Samsung has already brought THREE wasted generations, S21-S23.

Totally agreed with the contour-cut camera housing been removed,it doesnt serve much to protect the camera lens but with a bulky shape out of proportionate to the overall outlook.
After reading the spec it was good that they using snapdragon Gen 2 for the S23 series
