Sony Xperia 1 V review

In other news. I'll be happy to buy another Xperia phone when they at least come with fast charging. I do understand though the phone not coming with a charger because the charging speed is so slow and just about any Power Delivery charger will work and charge the phone at the same speed.

I'm happy that they still have the 3.5mm jack and MicroSD but unfortunately the camera still needs to come as far as Vivo and Oppo at the very least. There is too much astigmatism on the Sony phone which is extremely weird because it does have T* coating.

Jonnyboy , 15 May 2023 I also want to highlight two more things towards the camer... moreProbably any flagship can shoot raw right now. 1V is probably the sharpest, most colorful and best processed 12mp you can find.
In comparison 50mp jpegs from xiaomi 13 ultra look too unnatural with their worm like processing, not sure how it is with raws though, but colors are definitely behind xperia - being yellowish-pinkish.
As for S23ultra, colors are good enough, not yellow but cold(even if not like in xperia), but 50mp not to mention 200mp got more detail. But it's just main camera, I did not compare the other ones.
there is also the reach thing, how wide uw is, resolved detail and low light in other cameras, which depends a lot also on sensor size. In that sense has xiaomi 13 ultra the best hw, big hi res sensors with bright apertures.
Depends on use case, mi13u needs a lot of play in editing sw, with xperia its easy.

[deleted post]No. Sony is simply lacking behind the competition as far as support goes, there's no spinning it into a positive thing. They need to improve it and make the support periods for devices longer. Not just 1-2 major updates. 3 is a good minimum to start with. It's a horrible idea to ask for a top dollar for a device that gets forgotten by Sony after 2 major updates. That's just bad support. Especially bad when they basically use a stock Android, it should be easy to provide more major updates! What a sad company.

I am not convinced that back is glass. If you scratch it, it makes same sound plastic would.

I also want to highlight two more things towards the camera like feeling of this phone. At first it can shoot RAW. Correct me if I am wrong but I think that the Samsung galaxy S23 Ultra can't. In any case, shooting at RAW is not the rule for all the camera phones out there. It means you can post process the image for further improvement. Also it has lenses made of glass instead of plastic. An element that adds in sharpness.

                    Nick Tegrataker, 15 May 2023Not to mention this 48MP (I know it's 52MP but I'... moreA7s3 is 48 advertised as 12.
GH6 is 100MP , advertised as 20 (100 is just with pixel shift , not QB to bayer mode).
If I am not wrong, Fuji X-H2s is QB too, but advertised as 26MP.
It is not sony electronics exclusivity.

All these phones have to choose between 48/50MP 10bit or 12/12.5MP 12bit (in case you doubt it, just check papers from sony semicon about any very known sensor).
This is how all sensors works. Sony Electronics has made choice for second option.
Any high res above 10bit is by software, not hardware.
Another reason none of them want high res bayer.
Also, the readout at 48 is surely way slower than 12. That would impact the AF features since it does not have A1 sensor speed (no phone has) .

It is all about the priorities each brand has. I imagine similar reason why pixel does not allow 50MP at 1x.

BTW, DPR is still publishing stuff somehow.

[deleted post]At least I don't need 4 accounts with the same names to get my point across mate. In any case I'm happy to report each of them for trolling, until you learn how to behave normally here.

I stand by what I said about Xperia devices. My first Xperia XZP had 33% of the left side of the lens completely blurry in every photo. Replacing it lost me a phone for 4 weeks. Then it came back with 10% of the lens damaged.

Second Xperia, the Pro-i had an amazing camera but the screen was defective. It wasn't properly joined to the display screen, so the blacks were totally crushed and the dynamic range was completely broken. They replaced the screen and broke/disconnected my ultrawide camera. It just totally disappeared from the camera app. The company I got it from took all of them off their catalogue, I had bought the last one they had in stock anyway but they said almost everyone had complained about the phone. For €1800 it was just an expensive brick. I swapped it for the S22U which was also a garbage phone, much worse camera but at least better phone.

I wonder if it's possible for you to have a conversation without resorting to trolling and just making pointless emoji reactions toward other comments. Let's see if you have something actually intelligent to say. It's cool if you like these phones, but just replying with drivel is going to get you banned.

S Yu, 15 May 2023>The 4.3:3 multi-aspect sensor has a larger area than th... moreNot to mention this 48MP (I know it's 52MP but I'm talking about the photo resolution here) sensor essentially acts as a 12MP sensor - No 48MP mode in either JPEG or RAW, and it doesn't even crop from the full resolution image when you're shooting in 2x "zoom".

Sony isn't exactly known for the most honest marketing when it comes to the image sensor specs on their phones (e.g. The "type 1" sensor on Pro-I) so it doesn't come off as a surprise to me, but nevertheless they should've just straight-up advertised it as having a 12MP sensor instead if they lock it to that binned resolution.. what they are doing right now is quite misleading to say the least.

You have to clear up in your head the target group of this smartphone. This phone is for people that do not wish to carry around a camera with interchangeable lenses but still want a camera like phone with ease of use. So it must be portable, with camera like controls. And that is exactly the case here! It's not similar to the other cameras! It has PASM, eye autofocus,it can shoot 30 shots in a second (!) ,it has focus peaking and it simulates a dedicated camera in many ways. The image quality is not the best out there. It needs improvement in low light performance. With a tripod you can compensate that aspect a bit. And you can also attach quality speakers for high quality audio. You can take a lot from something that fits into your pocket.

                                >The 4.3:3 multi-aspect sensor has a larger area than the mainstream 4:3 sensor, and this can be used to improve video stabilization.
...These people are confused. These people are severely confused. With a given diagonal, the larger the aspect ratio the smaller the area. This is not rocket science, it's primary school math.

                                Among other factual mistakes.

And given the unwarranted hype over almost everything about this model and the usually forgiving tone regarding the glaring shortcomings(e.g. still no DRR??) one has to suspect something fishy here.

Sony says the new main camera on Xperia 1 V has "double the low-light performance" compared to the one on Xperia IV - But one important detail that needs to be noted is that the sensor area itself has also increased by 70%.

Taking the difference in F-stop into account, this means that the new technology only brings roughly ~60% of improvement in performance in dark scenes, which is still substantial but not as massive as Sony claimed 2 years ago when they first announced the tech.

I had their Xperia XZ Premium and it was a beast of a phone back then. Single sensor absolutely destroyed everything. Though I had to return my first one too because 33% of the lens on the left-side was defective and made all of my photos turn out totally blurry when I compared with others on Reddit and XDA. When I got it back, it was more like 10% of the left side that was blurry, so I just left it. My ex got it as a hand-me-down after 1 year. Otherwise I loved that phone. Didn't even care that the bezels were massive. It was a joy to shoot photos with.

Xperia Pro-i was next. Huge disappointment. Amazing, amazing, amazing camera. Utterly garbage phone attached. Overheating in 5 minutes, throttling immediately. Crashing camera app. Both vlog screens DOA. Accessories were far too expensive. Support was horrible and the screen (which seems to be the same on this phone) had completely crushed blacks and broken dynamic range. I sent it to get fixed and they returned it with a disconnected ultrawide sensor and thought I would not notice... The returned phone had very visible residue from the re-gluing still visible under the corners of the screen.

I complained to my provider and they sent it back and took all of the phones off the shelf and discontinued sales because they had so many dissatisfied customers. I moved to the S22 Ultra but with it's Exynos 2200 it was arguably a worse phone even... the camera was total garbage compared to the Pro-i, although everything else was better. It still throttled a lot though.

Sony really needs to do something. They have some really amazing ideas but they fail so badly at the execution. Put proper fast charging in the phone and figure out better cooling so you can. Cut the price by at least 10-15% too.
