What is up with the low number of Xperias on used markets? All the pitiful amount I see are just Japanese docomo/kddi/softbank models which have almost no CFW support.

[deleted post]They're not making a specific model for a target market that is made up of a single purchaser/user.

YUKI93, 12 May 2023I really can't agree more. I never recommend flagship ... moreThe problem is that the pricing for Xperia devices just not attractive at all, people with slight tech knowledge would immediately compared it against with the Chinese counterpart.

Heck, even Samsung devices pricing make more sense the Sony devices. I am not saying that there is no reason for their high price tag, quality, water-proof and even removable SD/SIM card hot swap is really something differentiate them with the market competitor.

But at least the Sony pricing still make more sense than the Nokia Mobile (HMD) devices,

Anyway, asking me to buy a Xperia 10 iv with RM1699 (After discount though) still a hard pill to swallow for me, I would rather take Galaxy series or Pixel 7a, which not sure how much the retailer going to mark up again this time.

Too narrow. A deal killer. Sony, some of us use a phone to read text/letters. Min width 77+-. Maybe a 19:9 ratio? The lollipop sticks are worthless. After all, only a loser would watch video on a 2" wide screen. There are these items known as tablets.

I never recommend flagship phones, including Sony, to any of my average consumer friends unless they are heavy camera or Desktop Mode users. Mobile gaming may benefit from the better GPU, but even the GPU from the current upper-midrange SoCs, regardless of Qualcomm or MediaTek, are still more than capable for most people.

Ngl, I would easily recommend the Google Pixel to them if it's officially selling here in Malaysia, and I'm saying that as a Sony Xperia enthusiast.

Looking at the photos from this phone, it seems that Sony really isn't joking about it.

rizki1, 12 May 2023Not even a cable in the box and €50 for chargers? That is c... moreThere are a lot of reputable third-party chargers with three or four ports that you can get for the price, so it's not the end of the world. After all, all those triple-digit charging that exist nowadays require the brands' proprietary charging system.

The fact that it scored an extra 15 hours of battery endurance rating from last year's 1 Mk4 without using any LTPO screen panel proves how effective this new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is, while not forgetting Sony's new heat dissipation system.

I'm also impressed with the camera performance. The leap in sensor size from 1/1.7" to 1/1.35" really pays dividends for clear and crisp detail. Even when comparing this and last year's 1 Mk4 using the Photo Compare tool, the difference between the two is easily noticeable. As for the telephoto camera, I don't think we see a new commercially-available periscope camera that can cram 3x to 10x variable zooming without noticeably increasing the phone thickness. Maybe we'll see one exist in future, but only time will tell.

Overall, a worthy successor to the 1 Mk4. I've been holding off on Sony's 2021 and 2022 flagship phones, including the Pro-I, because of the thermal-inefficient 888 and 8 Gen 1. It's great to see Qualcomm finally got things right again with 8 Gen 2. No question, this is my next phone.

P.S. I've been searching about the IMX888 sensor. All that I found so far was that it's the same sensor as the primary wide camera of the Huawei P60 series. Interestingly, I don't see any mention of Quad Bayer pixel binning. It makes me wonder if this IMX888 is a native RGB sensor that relies on oversampling methods, just like the Nokia 808 PureView and the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Not even a cable in the box and €50 for chargers? That is crazy for cheap 30W. Chinese brands with 100W more are even cheaper.

I think they use "high-quality" cooling inside, even cheap chinese brand phones are more stable.

Best thing about the new sensor tech is that effectively you can have a smaller cameras with same capabilities to a large sensor since the photodiodes are not obstructed by the transistor sitting next to it. Top layer would be all photodiodes while the transistors sits below it meaning the effective light gathering is nearly twice or more compared to previous sensor tech.

This also means sensors can be small enough but have high light gathering capabilities. So phones can have 1/1.3 but have effective image capture similar to a 1 incher and smaller sensors can also have near 1 inch or 1/1.13 or 1/1.12, theoretically speaking. So something like Samsung's 10MP telephoto could capture similar performance to it's 50MP S23s. It's big claims but you never know. This is all speculation but it could be true enough for it to be better than slapping 1 inch sensors.

Still it does mean we can have good cameras in small bodies. Although it'll probably take between 5 to 10 years it'll be that cameras can be small but still powerful. We don't have to deal with big camera humps and ultrawides and telephotos would be close enough to their main sensors light capturing prowess to make it less obsolete.

In short, we can finally have a smaller but more powerful sensor while keeping phones slim. No more mega humps on smartphones anymore 😂. (Yes this is a long explanation but it's an understanding nonetheless.)

                                      Solid review.

I still using purple OG X1 and serve me quite well from 2019. The only weaken parts is just the battery which start to degrade, the rest is quite good and I didn't expect old SD855 still can perform very good for 2023.

I am not urge to upgrade since I am already have compact APS-C mirrorless a6000 kit as my main shooting gear so I declare my end game pursuing smartphone with ultimate camera. But at least, I have nice option down the road when my OG X1 breaks and I planning to using it as longer as possible until it completely in unusable state.

I rest my case here as that's not the point that I wanted to emphasise, but I'll refer to it as a 48MP sensor from now on since I will be focusing on the photographic aspect of this camera.

"Some stuff that can be well sone at 12, would not be well done at 48. Some penalties exist"
The entire point of having a 48MP Quad Bayer sensor is that you can switch between those two modes. A full-res mode is definitely beneficial when you want to capture additional details and this is just an undeniable fact, even though there will be a considerable increase in noise if you start shooting at higher ISO settings. The 2x digital zoom looks like crap on this phone because it's a simple upscale from a 3MP image, and it makes no sense to lock it to 12MP mode and advertise it as a 48MP sensor.
