There is no 13.

48 locked at 12 for same reason done to A7s3 and pixel 6/7.
Some stuff that can be well sone at 12, would not be well done at 48. Some penalties exist.
Also, does not make sense the 8K for Cinema Pro since the other two cant do it. User would be locked at one focal length for whole project.

    It is not 4:3 ...."

I know that and I already pointed that out in my comment on the press-release article of Xperia 1 V. I'm saying it's 52MP because that's just the resolution of the sensor, in fact if you re-read my comment, you can see that I said "the centre 3MP portion of the **12MP** image", not 13MP.

          It is not 4:3 ....

You can never use more than 48MP in 4:3 ratio.
          Imx300 (z5/XZ) was total 25.1 or 25.3MP , 23 effective.
          Multi-aspect too.

Same or almost same FOV between photo and video modes prevent loss of resolution when EIS is used.

Anton-, 12 May 2023You install the G cam and that's it, you'll have ... moreGCam historically hasn't worked well on Xperia from what I remember. Moreover, it doesn't address any of the issues I mentioned at all.

James Nana, 12 May 2023Some much potential but packed with features that appeal to... moreIf someone is casual user, should not even spend more than 500 on cellphone to begin with.

It is like buying Dell Alienware laptop just to watch videos and read news.

                    - The actual screen-on battery life falls behind the competitors, but in the tradition of Xperia, it has a very good standby time so it manages to score similarly to other flagships in terms of the overall battery endurance. Sony's idol power consumption management has always been stellar since 10 years ago, which is definitely worth noting.

                    - It's good to see Xperia 1 finally gaining an auto brightness boost. Sure it doesn't outshine the competition, but hey, at least the display remains mostly visible outside now. That extremely primitive HRR implementation, though..

                    - Unimpressive performance stability in both CPU and GPU. I thought Find X6 Pro wasn't doing particularly well in these torture tests among all the 8g2-powered flagships, and oh boy, Xperia 1 V turns out to be even less impressive overall. Although to be fair, it does throttle a tiny bit less than X6 Pro in the GPU part. In the end, S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Ultra still take the cake here.

                    - I would say the main camera performance is quite impressive. The details are sharpened than I would like, which could be said for almost all phones apart from the recent Xiaomi flagships, but I like the general colour rendition and the lack of oil-painting effect, and the sensor's significantly improved light-collecting ability over the predecessor is clearly showing in the night time shots (although they are pretty noisy for some reason). This time around the lens is tack-sharp corner-to-corner, too!

                    - What is questionable, however, is that Sony treats this sensor as having only 13MP rather than 52MP - I could be generous and let the lack of support for a full-resolution output in Photo Pro and 8K recording in Video/Cinema Pro slide, but the fact that it doesn't even utilise the extra resolution in 2x zoom but only upscales and oversharpens the centre 3MP portion of the 12MP image is.. very disappointing. Pixel 6 situation all over again, folks.

                    - Excellent video quality during the day, but falls short at night. I guess the message here is "Just capture the footage in HLG and adjust the exposure later for the maximum quality", but it's not extremely practical if you *just* want a good-looking low-light video and don't want to fiddle with the footage.

I would definitely like to try it out in the store, but since Sony hasn't released a new phone where I live since the OG Xperia 1, my hope is pretty thin.

Some much potential but packed with features that appeal to only a niche of the market and for a premium price no less. Many casual users who want simple point and shoot camera devices that also have to be good gaming phones will probably go for other devices with cheaper prices.

[deleted post]Xperia 1 IV had mmWave.

[deleted post]what do you need the 18GB ram for? just for bragging! because this phone can run so smooth like butter even if it has 8GB of ram.... 12GB is more than enough with it's power efficient CPU and GPU.... it's not about high numbers but it's about the capabilities.

Anyone else a bit disappointed with the textured back and ridged sides? I prefer a smooth phone because it’s easier to clean. So much dirt is going to get trapped in there!

The only thing like about this phone the ability to shoot 4k@120fps, no ugly curved screen other than that nothing and hope it’s not going to throttling fast due to SD card, 4k OLED and 4k@120fps Sony should’ve put big a&$& cooling system including a lot thermo paste.

GSM Arena might want to reshoot the test rig shots. There's an IMX686 phone from 2021 that has clearer feature detail than the Xperia 1 V in good lighting, and I find that either hard to believe or really discouraging for Sony.

Just want to move from s23U to Sony Xp1 V,
