"The 120Hz mode will maintain the nominal refresh rate when you interact with the phone but will switch down to 60Hz when idling. If you're under a certain brightness threshold, there will be no downswitching, regardless of battery mode."
This is the problem. Why not just downswitch in regardless of brightness? Refresh rate behaviour is very poor in ZenFones. There's nothing automatic about auto mode, it just drops to 60hz in every app, i.e. when not in SystemUI. Whereas, in auto mode, we expect it to drop 60hz when not interacting and shoot upto 90hz/120hz when a touch is detected. Asus UI is developed by incompetent people and is plagued with bugs here and there that aren't found even in cheap Pocophones.

I have to agree with the general opinion here. Last year, the Zenfone 9 could make sense especially in countries where it's main competition was the Exynos S22, which was kind of a mess. None of this apply here, and Asus has even lost their edge on speakers. Given there isn't any mention of vibration or haptics anywhere, I trust the motor is either the same as last year or worse. And while the Zenfone 9 might seem like an appealing option, there is no mention of it benefiting of the recent support extention promise, meaning it has probably a year left of security updates at best.
I was hesitating between Zenfone 10 and ROG Phone 7, now my preference clearly goes to the later. And again, only considering it over the ROG 6 due to it having many more security updates left.

Pretty disappointed with the upgrade. Very minimal. But Z9 is not an option as software support is basically over at this point. Glad I got a S23 as a successor to my S10e. But I will be missing the S10e side mounted fingerprint reader. The Z10 could have been so much better if the reduced the bezels, improved the cameras and gave longer software support

Congrats Asus for making cam perform worse than previous.
Zen9 was already bad at it, now someone there decides to samsungnize it.

Expandable storage would've made this an insta buy for me. Maybe if the 512gb model is cheap.

Lovely phone. Nice selection of colors, great battery life, compact size and 4 years of security updates.
I might go for it instead of S23 or pixel 8.

I also compared the new S23+ with my old phone like how fast they are opening calendar, galery, message app and my old phone is a bit faster due to reduced animation speed. I didnt buy the S23+ due to bananagate, otherwise Galaxy series is a great purchase.
