The 24mp samples do look a bit mushy at 100%. I think it has to do with apple overly compressing the photo. As stated, only 1-1.5mb (less than 50%) increase in file size for 2x increase in resolution? That's too little even for heic.

"And here are a few 12MP photos taken with the new iPhone. Those are the usual oily over-sharpened mess the iPhones present as class-leading photos. Well, they are not. We suspect Apple finally understood that, and it solved it with... supersampling. Magic."

After all these years, you agree 😂. I'm not even going to lookup your previous reviews and how you praised them.

So, 24MP photos are now standard? because Apple has made it the default.

Well, I did like some of those photos. The portraits with the telephoto are particularly good. And for video recording there's no better phone around. However it feels they're struggling to innovate. Like I've said a few times in the past, I hope the day comes where this rate at which companies are churning new phones slow down, maybe every two or three years. They're pushing the A17 Pro beyond the limits just to market it as a faster chipset (which honestly feels like an overclocked A16 which in turn was an overclocked A15). In turn they get a but worse sustained performance and battery life. Among orher things... It all feels stale, exhausted. Someone with a 13 Pro Max has little reason to upgrade, for example. Tiresome.

"The new Photonic Engine combines the best pixels from a super‑high‑resolution image with another that’s optimised for light capture. So you automatically get 24MP photos"

You really think you can make up stuff out of thin air and get away with it. "Source: Trust me bro" only works for your friend but not for strangers on the internet🤦

5x night photos is really impressive... Good job Apple.

But other than that, iphone 13 pro max looks really promising right now.

To those that have never seen, upscaling degrades quality. Easily masked by those sharpen softwares for video/photo editing. You can make 720p become 4k quality without looking fake and obvious.

                          Naughty apple.

It seems like the rear glass being more shatter prone was a deliberate choice by Apple.

"And those camera lenses will scratch any glass they come in contact with."

Surely another internet myth. The titanium lens surrounds protrude above the lens glass (sapphire or not) and so the lens isn't going to touch any glass surface.

Why do you say Photographic styles would be something different than filters? At least, on Galaxys they are permanent too and you can define the level of the filters, too. Photographic styles are literally just a fancy name for filters which pre-existed on other phones since years (on Galaxys since S4, for both photos and videos).

Super Android 22, 28 Sep 2023It looks like a really good phone, in the uk it will be ins... moreThat's not true. The Xiaomi 13 pro is currently £1,100 in the UK on Xiaomi's UK website and that is not their top flagship. They didn't launch the the Xiaomi 13 ultra in the UK but obviously it would be significantly more than that (it launched for €1,500 so you're talking about £1,300 if it was launched in the UK) . Oppo didn't launch their flagship series outside China this year so can't really compare uk pricing.

After quite a long time a phone I really like the night photography of - personally I'm absolutely OK with that "over-sharpening". Similar approach to my older OP Nord 2 night mode - see the pics, similar results (which is a compliment to OP). Just in case of the traffic light intersection iP underexposed it a bit - perhaps the night mode didn't switch on. But for it's restrictive system polici iP is a no go for me.
