OnePlus Open review

The cameras seem to be superb. I have used the GSMArena photo-comparison tool and compared the One+OPen with the Sony Xperia 1V, which seem to have exactly the same main camera sensor.
Here is a notable difference: In the low-light scene, the Sony always chose lower ISO (350) and longer exposure time (1/15s), while One+Open camera chose high ISO (I think it was something like ISO 2500) and shorter exposure time (1/50s IIRC).
The results are interesting: On average, both seem to generate very similar output, however, the Xperia pictures seem to be slightly less exposed and display more detail.
That being said: 1/15 s of exposure time is photograpically quite a long time, and either one has really very steady hands or the lens stablizing and electronic image stabilization are so excellent that they allow for such long exposure times without introducing any blur from camera shaking.
That being said: 1/15s works of course only for static objects. If there are moving objects or subjects, they will all be blurred. But then again, the Sony is famous for its manual settings ability, so if someone needs to shoot moving objects in low light, may manually increase ISO and lower exposure time.

Currently, the One+ Open seems to be the best foldable device, hands down.
It has the best camera setup, gorgeous screens and its overall construction and build quality are arguably among the best one can get.
Nontheless: This all applies if you are in the market for a foldable device AND if you are willing to spend 1800E, which is almost twice as much as you would pay for current non-foldable flagship devices.
So, the price is the obvious elephant in the room that needs to be measured against the use case of such a foldable device:
Most people who are into photography and are willing to pay the extra buck for getting the best possible camera experience on their phones are not necessarily the same people who are into hardcore gaming (who would appreciate the extra large screen) and are not necessarily the same people who are video/media aficionados who use to watch movies on larger screens even while on the road.
So, the target group would be people who have all three or at least two overlapping interests (best photo, large screen media consumption, hardcore gaming) AND are willing to sell a kidney in order to get enough money for such a device.
From my personal and highly subjective perspective, a much smarter and more cost-sensitive solution would be to pick a non-foldable device with similar camera performance (e.g. a Galaxy S 23 Ultra, which in its lowest configuration can be had for as low as 1000E) and a dedicated small tablet for the best movie watching experience. Decent small tablets in the size of up 10" are selling for 200E or less and do have much better battery life.

AHP, 19 Oct 2023max anyone would want to pay for One Plus fold/open is -30%... moreIDK why people are considering the Samsung superior. This looks so much better. On Fold 5 you are also getting like S22 photo quality whereas the OnePlus Open it's flagship class performance. I'm happy to pay more for a better phone. It's not like Oneplus is Tecno.

WOW - could it be? A phone that doesn't oversharpen the sh*t out of its photos?? Amazing!
I already consider this camera better than the iPhone, Galaxy, Huawei, etc simply because of this.
How beautiful it is to see the grass and leaves not smeared. Colour science also really appeals to me too.
Despite all the flaws, well done OnePlus for making such a great camera for this phone.

Galaxy Z Fold5 can be cheaper than the Open. Z Fold5 support S-Pen and complete IPX8 so OnePlus Open with that price is joke.

Inner Display: 2440x2268px resolution, 1.076:1 aspect ratio, 426ppi;
Cover display:, 6.31" LTPO3 OLED,2484x1116px resolution
And awkward inner aspect ratio...........
So tell me.....
What is the meaning of 2 screens when both are running same resolution?
Funny thing is "we will be watching black bars most of the time in that giant display".... LOL
Foldable are meaningless to me unless they provide near 16:9 ratio in inner and near 20:9 ratio at outer display.

I really like what they've done with this phone. The large round camera module with bumpy leather and separate flash reminds me of an old school camera.
The photos are very good overall and the software is the best on a foldable. I reckon this is now the best fold on the market.

Bodygard, 19 Oct 2023The Z Fold5 512GB costs today €1300 brand new. That's ... moreI couldnt find it anywhere for that price searching for all pricing on online stores (going in to a brick and mortar store might be different/different per country or state). Average ive just checked is more like:-
£1700
$1700
€1800
This is for the 512gb model, only place i could find that price was a review website saying it.

Chad oneplus, oppo and honor on their way to teach scamsung how to make a foldable with flagship features worthy of the price tag. I have used chinese phone since 2017 and I own fold 4 atm. Honestly software differences are so exaggerated. My next phone is totally not scamsung anymore

Anonymous, 19 Oct 2023it's absurd. Any ultra expensive modern phone doesn... moreBecause $150 dont have the top end chipset with QHD HDR 120hz+ LTPO screens, up to wifi 7 connectivity (once available), the best cameras on a mobile device (and usually only 1 not say 4 useable cameras) fast wired, wireless and reverse charging... The list goes on.
A $150 phone are designed to essentially be throw away work horses so focus on microSD slot and Jack while keeping production costs down to make a bigger, more consistent profit. That means usually 720p, LCD low brightness screens, single speaker, no IP, polycarbonate build, at best wifi 5 connectivity, etc etc...
Flagships with all of the above are generally seen as too expensive vs the mainstream choices (xperia and RoG phones as an example, foldable phone levels of pricing at times).

LoneOwl, 19 Oct 2023The best Oneplus device of 2023 is Nord 3.
Highly compet... moreTbf all foldables, s23u and iphone PM phones are all too expensive, its why YoY we are seeing a decline in phone sales whether its slabs or foldables. (i believe a lot of flagship/foldable sales are 2-4 year contract deals/renewed contracts not outright bought).
Also the fold 5 is generally between £1700 to £2000 so actually is the same price/more expensive, atleast buying it via most online stores. Samsungs own store its £2050, some prices involve some galaxy buds too so really its very give and take with price vs the Open.

Anonymous, 19 Oct 2023Why Android always lie when it comes to brightness level 28... moreYou're confusing HDR brightness to auto outdoor max brightness. It can peak at 2800nits (or close to for, im guessing, certain HDR content playback). Also if you're phone is running its screen at 2800nits most the time good look having a useable phone (either for battery or life of the panel).

AHP, 19 Oct 2023max anyone would want to pay for One Plus fold/open is -30%... moreWhy would you wanna pay the same for the fold if its a worse device (technically speaking)? So fold its fine at £1600-£2000 but anything else no?
The open has 2 FAR better screens, gets better overall battery endurance (based off gsms testing), faster charging with the actual charger in the box, better cameras too.
I think most people just wouldnt pay these prices no matter the brand tbh.

"The OnePlus Open employs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset by Qualcomm, and it should be among the last top-tier phones to use it before the Gen 3 arrives in a few days."
Totally doubt that. Brands will keep on using 8 Gen 2 as next year's affordable flagship. If the 8 Gen 3 proves to be an overheating mess like 888, 888+, and 8 Gen 1, expect to see higher resurgence with 8 Gen 2.

Anonymous, 20 Oct 2023See ricciolo on twitter.
He shows photo of this device an... moreThat's clearly a propaganda/troll account, look at how they uploaded an extremely low-resolution, low-quality photo without even citing the source of their information lol. Judging from the position of the inner front-facing camera, the one that has a deeper crease is the Fold, so they (and you) completely got it the other way around..
Meanwhile, the actual crease comparison between Fold 5 and Open from a reputable Twitter user:
