Using Galaxy A54 from the last 3 months. I am wondering why gsmarena mentioned the lagginess in their review. Sure there are stutters here and there but there are barely noticeable. My experience till day is very smooth.

I am using A54 for severam months now, since my gf was wanting my previous S20 FE because of the camera abd I wanted a better battery life smartphone anyway.
Overall the points in the review are right, but not all of them. The phone smoothness if more than sufficient in everyday use and I very, very rarely experience noticeable slowdowns. For example my previous S20 FE with supposedly much more powerful SD865 at some point became way too choppier in everyday use after several updates and resets. Exynos 1380 in theory should be much weaker SoC but in everyday use its not noticeable at all and is much more efficient than SD865.
The camera for the price is also supricingly good, especially at night shots, but of course is no match for the S20 FE. The speakers are arguably much better but the screen is however not - the S20 FE is having much more balanced colors and there is much less greenish color shift when tilting the screen vertically and horizontally, the difference in the quality of the panel is clearly visible side by side. I presume it's because probably the two devices use different type of suppliers or displays, but still A54 is waaay far from flagship display quality and it shows.
Overall the A54 is still not the best midranger in general, but for its price, especially in discount times it's hard to find reasonable alternative at least here in Bulgaria - the Pixel 7A is ridiculously overpriced and niche, the Pocos and the Redmi prices have risen and I honestly got tired of the endless MIUI bugs and oddities after few years using them.

Ultima 9, 04 Dec 2023Not defending anything here. But i can definitely say after... moreBut this phone has a 120 Hz display. Why play at only 60 FPS, though? 120 would be a massive improvement in smoothness.

This is why is just too contraditory this review.
The whole time saying it´s a brilliant device but then fails on the most important point in GSM Arena own words
"The main downside of the A54 has to do with performance, and especially smoothness. It's rather lacking in the former regard, which we could presumably give it a pass on since it's not trying to be a flagship, but the amount of micro stutters and lag throughout our use with it do not make for a smooth phone at all.
In fact, this is the least smooth phone we're reviewed long-term in the last two years."
What´s the point on having a 400€ if the OS behavior it´s rubbish?

Even if someone wants to play pubg m at 60 fps they can use gfxtool. The temp then rises up to 39 degree Celsius. And a battery drain of 1% per 2.5-3 minutes.

Not defending anything here. But i can definitely say after using this phone for over 4 months i have barely noticed any lag. I don't know which unit the internet reviews but my a54 doesn't lag at all. Games like pubg m should be optimized for this chipset so that it can run at 60 fps. Other than one or two games all games run at 60 fps without any issue. Battery performance is awesome. The camera is the best at the current price point. I am only saying this after using the phone for a while now.

Wonder when Samsung will fix their lag issues. Their phones are the main reason why Android got the "Lagdroid" name years ago.

"but it's so much laggier and choppier than, for example, the Poco F5 that we've recently reviewed long-term, that it's been hard to wrap our heads around the fact that two similarly priced devices can perform so differently in this area"
'tis what happens when a terrible company decides to put a cruddy mid range chip in a phone instead of high end silicon. With the performance tanked even further by the cruddy mid range chip being an Exynos one. Can't believe people buy this trash.

I think those who care about getting the best specs in a midranger won't buy this phone. But those that don't care, will.
I.e. the average Jane or Joe will buy this phone and be happy about it.

Or having a friend or relative own the exact phone model you're trying to defend sorely. It's hard to evaluate if the chipset is the reason for the slow downs. The majority of customers do not mind them, since otherwise Samsung as a phone brand would have been abandoned a long ago, but those who do, likely people who multitask, work or study using their phone for some tasks, have learned bitterly that Samsung will disappoint eventually, usually by offering a software update that simply dooms your phone to be slower. Why this happens you may ask; well of course it is software related, but it is purposely done? Perhaps, I cannot say, but I cannot buy Samsung so long as they basically remove the whatever component from their software that results to this, which might mean that they have to rewrite their whole Android variant altogether. They have the resources for that, but not the will it seems, because their customers are generally happy enough and when you have the capability to always offer the most appealing mid-range model price wise, then it is probable the user will buy from you again just thinking that such slow downs are normal on an old device, not knowing that other brands can be smooth from the start to the very end before hardware fails. I have nothing against Samsung, but those who deem smoothness as a major factor in a phone, and additionally have already owned multiple Samsung phones, they know what I'm talking about. Galaxy A54 isn't even that old yet, just wait how slow it is after two or three major updates.
Yet, I want to remind you, that to understand how various companies work, you need to understand their philosophy, structure and approach to things. Samsung likely doesn't have a single highly experted software team taking great care of all updates on their devices, like OnePlus originally had, but a large number of people to pump them out for their huge amount of devices as fast as possible, since customers seem to like, even demand, quick updates. This is a recipe for buggy and unpolished updates and since you need so many people on the software side due to your repertory of devices, likely people of various experience levels work there. I like that they possibly train young people in software development, but when the customer has to pay for this in an indirect way, it is depatable should this be, though even inexperienced coders can excel if given enough time to do the task I'm sure.
Thanks for this long-term review!
