Nokia E71 review: Messenger of steel

24 July 2008
Following some time off since the E51, the Nokia E-series is back to the shop with a new pet for business-minded users. Nokia E71 seems to have it all to take over and build on the E61 QWERTY messengers' expertise. The suave upgrade is...

harminder-India, 25 Jul 2008brother its time to UPGRADE urself and ur phone......i,m us... moreHi. U say u use e61i , yet talk of e71...
Well ok, how is the camera it is still greenish as in 61i or normal ?
My e61i gives out greenish that is because its original resolution is 640*320... And not 2mp.
I would like to know the e71 quality or whether its resolution too is 640*320 pixels....
    Thanks

You could also consider the: Samsung i780; 624mhz processor, 128mb ram, takes SD-HC cards, GPS, WiFi and 2 megapixels in a same Blackberry like package. Runs Windows Mobile Pro (= Office, Blackberry Connect, Garmin/TomTom, etc) I have a Samsung and it's perfect for me!

        Hey Darius.
I'm intrigued. It REALLY works?! Is the picture size and quality good enough?
See, I'm in the UK, and if I were able to watch BBC iplayer on this device via wi fi this would be the killer app for me!

          Hi from Australia.

The E71 doesn't sound like it would make a fast unassisted GPS device, which I am glad someone talked about (at last). I haven't seen a review quite as good as what you have written up here and want to tell you it's appreciated.

PS. I'm a big fan of the bold RED power button :) but it's not enough to make me buy it :)

YouTube DOES work on the this phone. Every flash site visited, even adult sites, the flash worked. I was shocked.

This actually does have Blackberry connect. So if you do have a Blackberry account, I don't, you can connect that account to this device. For some reason the review doesn't even touch the email capabilities of this thing, which is on par with the best of BBs. This phone will be great competition for the Bold. I think that why BB is waiting. They weren't ready.

The fps are actually at like 20-21. 22 is pushing it. But it's much better than the review explained. I think they did have a beta version. The pictures are so-so. That's they only flaw. But that's why I have a Nikon for. Not my phone.

The Wifi KILLS the Bold too, which won't have it since BBs don't have wifi for some odd reason. The keys are close and the screen is a tad bit smaller than the E61i, but no phone is designed for everyone. It works just fine for me. Liekw ith the new PS3 controllers. Theres a 3-4 day learning curve. Once you got it. It's all love.

ViOP calls, Symbian S60 3rd, Nokia Messaging, MS Office 2007 compatiblilty. I mean, if you find flaw in this phone, you're nickpicking.

                    Hi everyone....
Iam using e61i for the past few months...
I sincerely feel e71 is not an upgrade , besides it has less real estate (display screen)
.....iam an avid surfer, i surf almost any web pages using operamini , and i have never got a low memory message.even though e61i supposed to have 64mb ram.
                    (Against e71 128mb)
My phone has black berry connect.

google maps is available free, is better than nokia maps...
The keyboard is better than e71.
If you look at the feature you can see there is hardly any significant difference.
I had used e51 for 2 months and exchanged as it frequently crashed.
                    Web was not good either.
                    Even operamini used to fail....
E71 reminds me of the budget e51...(for the design is the same)
Budget phones have limitations in quality build as i discovered.
The e61- which was older than the e51 is a superior phone...
                    Far far better than e51...

Why is it mentioned as a "Blackberry Killer" when it does not/will not support Blackberry Connect? Seem to be important to many users... even Nokia Business as Blackberry users... So it will not be a competition for the Blackberry Bold.

The specs are promising but no Blackberry Connect means that this Nokia will not be a huge succes as it could be with Blackberry Connect.

The perfect phone for me. Synchronizes perfectly with Lotus Notes (incl. 8.*), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi just works :), GPS is picking up satellites very quickly, VPN (I can logon to intranet), fast, good feel, great calendar, customizing is OK, browser is good, great sound quality, keyboard great when you get used to it, many great details you discover when you use it - and you do not have to look at fancy animations whenever you activate something. Business power! :)

                        Minor drawbacks:
                        - The left soft-button for some reason launches the assigned application slower than the other soft-key and the quicklinks - just annoying.
                        - Not THAT fast, but since you can store the visited applications in memory, this is not a big problem.
                        - On the front side, the bottom part is made of plastic. I'd rather see some quality plastic (like on the backside) instead of a the applied metal-look paint. A business phone should be solid, not flashy.
                        - Nokia Maps not as good as Google maps - so just install that.
                        - Opera Mini is still a better browser in my opinion.
                        - QWERTY keys are aligned and not displaced like a normal keyboard (but you get used to it).

                          Hi,

I own nokia E61i, and very enthusiast to buy the new E71. But I was hoping that nokia will put more language on the E71 since E71 were geared as business-oriented phone.

As a phone that primary buyer were entrepreneur & manager the phone should not be divided into country-specific language like the non-business series (non E-series).

                          For example,
a person buy E71 in New York might have a business with some Japanese, Chinese, or Korean, and while it's great to be able to read e-mail in hand phone, it's a pity if nokia E71 can't display the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean font.

As a businessman, no matter where you bought the phone, you might have the need to read other language in SMS or e-mail. Therefore, I'm hoping that nokia will put other language in E-series. Because, as of now, I'm a proud owner of Nokia E61i. But, I feel ashame whenever my business partner sent me e-mail in Chinese, and I can't read the e-mail in my hand phone.

this phone really won my heart from the very first time i set sight on it even when it was just a rumor.. design and features really do well in this phone.. however, the keyboard was my problem.. it is so cramped, i find it hard to type a message using it.. haay... i would still buy it though for christmas when i have extra money to spend on something that really wont suit me (keyboard-wise).. for now, i'm gonna have to stick with moto q8 with much better keyboard..

Nokia says 640x480 at 22fps....maybe, if it can really record like that, I will get it an pay a lot less than the E90...

I thought i can replace my p1 with this phone but im a bit disappointed with some of its feature esp its camera. Although it has HSDPA but here in the philippines we only reach 2+mbps, thats why i use wifi here in our office. Regarding the GPS, I have HGE-100 accessory in my p1 which works perfectly fine in google maps. I guess i will still stick to my p1 and wait for Xperia X1 to hit the shelves. Cheers

Just got my phone today. It's powerful. I mean, that processor must be something because no lags and I already filled up the 2 GB card. The keys are close but not un-usable. Very stylish. The email on this is faster than the Blackberry Curve I have. I'm selling that on eBay. This e71 is banging.
