Oppo Find X7 Ultra review

05 March 2024

Sort by:

Even though the Find X7 Ultra will not be available outside the Chinese market, it is nonetheless very interesting to see the technological developments and advancements that are obviously possible and that big players like Apple or Samsung (and others) are withholding from the consumers because they don't want to make the perfect camera phone for their users, but just a phone that is only marginally better than its predecessor from previous year - of course charging the full price.

Software screenshots we miss that 🙏🏿

Super Android 22, 05 Mar 2024Sorry ill correct myself, the s24 and s24+ had the "in... moreWho cares if it is favoritism or not, The more popular phones get better coverage for a reason.

And the more popular they are the more attention they are going to get from reviewers. That is expected.

People are whining about the review and how long it took to publish etc.
The reviewers have to keep up with the rest of the review world and do proper reviews on trending devices and publish them on time.

There could be many reasons why this review is different from the rest. Time available to review the device before they have to send it back etc. Some omissions could be because of that, or maybe the supplier didn't want them to publish it. We will never know.

The bottom line is, that you got a decent review on a less popular phone, that is difficult to get outside China. If you don't like it, go find more reviews and read up elsewhere.
Stop whining over every little detail. Grow a pair and move on.

The most ugly phone I've ever seen. Err

jiyen235, 06 Mar 2024Bruh they didn't even dive into any nitty gritty stuff... moreYeah, filters are actually a very important part of photography. As someone who shoots with a Fujifilm camera, I basically use their film simulation filters all the time. I mean, they don't really give you a choice not to lol, as it's baked right into the camera.

I've now come to realize that every camera has their own "filter" in some way, as in the way it renders colors. The default 'filter' on Canon cameras always emphasizes a warm reddish tone on skin. Even though Fujifilm cameras are all about its film simulations, I've noticed that shots come out more natural looking than a similar Sony mirrorless camera.

One of the things I like about Fujifilm cams is the lack of a lowpass filter, so no anti-aliasing, which means sharper images. I wonder if these smartphone camera sensors come with an anti-aliasing filter. If so, the possibility of a no-AA IMX989/LYT-900 sensor would excite me. Or, if the anti-aliasing is software-based, add a camera setting to turn it off or adjust its intensity. Of course, this is just the camera enthusiast within me talking, I don't really know how much people have considered this aspect before in a smartphone camera.

Anonymous, 06 Mar 2024Is the large circular camera island a Chinese thing? Seems... moreIn no way this is a 2015 thing, lol.

Essentially, you could summarize and say this phone has a 14-135mm f/1.8-4.3 lens.

I love that smartphone cameras are becoming more like actual cameras, especially with these one inch sensors. For perspective, the Sony RX-100 also has a one inch sensor.

Bruh they didn't even dive into any nitty gritty stuff in the Master mode, just like in the Find X6 Pro and Oneplus 12 review. There's no mention of the "Master Filters" and how they change up the scene. 90% of photographers edit their photos, if they take a photo they're going to transform it somehow and these filters sometimes do the job for most normal people and hobbyist photographers, not diving into any of these filters is just plain lazy and calls into question the depth of this review. Their reviews have been quite weird lately, the Oneplus 12 didn't have any portrait mode shots and just like this review, had no photo comparison tool shots either. Recent few phones seem to be missing that, just why? These "reviews" feel less like reviews nowadays and more like benchmarks, just testing it a little and calling it a day. Why should long term reviews and these normal reviews be so different like why not talk about the software issues, quirks or any good things about the software in the normal reviews? Why not talk about screen on times and stuff?

The 13 Ultra review went into so many portrait modes and had 3 separate pages with one dedicated to the hardware and the app. It was China exclusive then and the global availability was shoddy, idek where it was available. The rating system remains confusing as always, this phone getting anything less than a 4.6 is criminal considering the last phone got it and this is just that phone but better in every way with new cameras, better speakers, better cooling/thermal stability and better battery life that is great for people who don't game. The S24 Ultra received 4.6 so maybe this phone's rating is reduced so that the S24 Ultra seems cooler ig. The display's brightness is the one thing that bothers a lot, idk what it is that they're doing to test it but it just is weird, C4Etech got 1250 nits on the Find X7 Ultra and 1700 nits on the Oneplus 12 on full field tests whereas GSMarena does 75%, idk man something's weird. And finally the thing that bothers me the most is, when was this review started and done? Was it before or after the updates? Before the updates the camera was wack but it looks good now. In the 2 month window there must've been SOME updates right?

Also, the low light 2x and low light 1x photos are the same lmao, 2 months for this. The UW cam, more than being less detailed I think is just less sharpened. The main thing I'd say is problematic compared to the last phone is the depth of field of the UW cam but if you have no problems with that, the UW photos are fantastic, just soft. A little sharpening in an editing tool would easily fix this and anyone who uses a phone won't think "oh no my phone's photos are so soft I should've gotten something else", they'll think "oh wow the photo's a bit soft for me, lemme just crank up the sharpness a bit lol".

walkman8, 05 Mar 2024If only the main camera had the same color science as the t... moreidk about you but most of the time when I take photos of people I use the telephoto lens and it seems Oppo has tuned it like that, the main cam is a new sensor maybe that's why they're having trouble lining it up properly or they think when people take photos with the main cam they'd like the people to be brighter so that they look "better"/contrast the background better. This IS an asian phone after all and the lengths some asian influencers go to is craaazyyy.

Anonymous, 06 Mar 2024Is the large circular camera island a Chinese thing? Seems... moreIf you have 2015 hardware like in the S24 Ultra, then yeah the island's gonna be smaller

Amazing natural looking photos from all cameras. UW is less sharp than others because of relaxed sharpening. With my S23 Ultra set to "image dimming" medium will give similar sharpness.

3x camera has a great lens and sensor, 5 times better than my S23 Ultra it seems.

Only let-down of the Find X7 Ultra is the 2x zoom, which is way sharper on the S23 Ultra. Also I don't like distortion correction of ultrawides, looks weird and ugly. Seems only Samsung and Sony let you disable the distortion correction.

6x camera is sharper than S23 Ultra's 10x camera but its a shame they didn't try to shoot above 6x since its a high-res sensor.

Is the large circular camera island a Chinese thing? Seems like multiple companies use this design and it's really ugly. Feels like it should belong in 2015.

Super Android 22, 05 Mar 2024They have had the phone in the office since January 14th, ... moreIt is actually Xiaomi that has the most coverage if you count the number of reviews on this site since the start of 2023 until today. Xiaomi has 35 reviews versus 27 for Samsung (if I counted correctly). Basically, though Samsung and Xiaomi get the most coverage on gsmarena. This is not surprising as those are the two android brands that are most globally available also get the most clicks/views and thus earn the most money for gsmarena. As these two brands launch more phones globally they also probably supply gsmarena with more phones globally and there are usually conditions attached to that in terms of when to publish the reviews. Companies supply reviewers with the phones as a form of advertising/marketing and the relationship may break down if the reviewers don't follow the conditions and/or are too negative in their reviews. This is a business remember and they have to make money to pay their salaries and continue providing reviews. It's not a charity. Thus they have to make decisions about which phones to prioritize and which relationships with manufacturers to prioritize. They are likely to priortize the brands that make more money. That is a normal business decision

I've bought this phone. Been having it for 3 days. Can't say I'm regretting anything but yeah battery is quite a bit inferior, cameras are OK but fhe UW downgrade makes 0 sense (UW is very important to me), night processing of the pics is so-so (and what GSMArena didn't mention, actually they did but did not explain; 6x isn't almost ever turning on during night because it's f/4.3). I like this phone but I as well might replace it with the X100 Ultra as it's HP3 will be 4x f/2.5 (FX7U's 3x is f/2.6!), only if the selfie department doesn't disappoint there..but yeah, Oppo might fix all this with them updates as this is crap bb for this result on Geekbench when not running in high perf mode

And to be clear, once again, I'm talking about cons, just a reminder that FX6P got 4.7 or 4.8 by GSMArena so I'm kind of let down by this phone as I expected a beast tbh but this ain't bad either.

Do not misunderstand, Vivo X100 Pro is absolutely not worth over this phone as it leaves quite a bit to be desired in other areas, but the Ultra? Hell yeah, well, probably.

Oppo and Vivo decide where launch their phones. BBK was just a holding company but apparently it doesn't even exist anymore as it has been disbanded.

                                3. Vivo launched the x100 pro globally in many countries
                                4. Oppo did launch the find X5 series globally but they didn't launch the x6 and x7 series globally. This was probably influenced by their patent dispute with Nokia. According to gsmarena they will launch the x8 series globally though now that the patent dispute has been resolved
