dcdev, 15 May 2024It sounds a bit useless. This sensor is small - 1/3.5"... moreNot useless apart from the fact that a 50 megapixel sensor doesn't exist for this sensor size. You would need a pixel size of approximately 0.50 micrometer for a 48 megapixel sensor of this sensor size. The lowest pixel size available is 0.56 micrometer currently.
Phones like the Pixel 7 Pro or S24 Ultra capture about the same amount of light per exposure time from distant objects due to approximately the same focal length/f-number ratio (5.43mm). A different pixel size doesn't change the amount of light that is captured from an object.

dcdev, 15 May 2024It sounds a bit useless. This sensor is small - 1/3.5"... moreYou can use as much digital zoom as you want , no matter resolution.
My motorola has 4x with 50MP, old xperia had 8x.
Some older iphones with that 12MP 1/1.65" had 12x digital zoom.

It has jack because it's a phone from 2015. By look at least.

It's sad to see people judge software by number of updates instead of actual performance and stability. In my experience, Xperia phones have the most stable and bug free UI among any Android brands, and it remains as such for many years to come. An Xperia 5ii still feels snappy and bug-free today which cannot be said for bloated Samsung UI of S20 series regardless of number of updates they get.

Awesome photos, speakers and battery life, with four years of updates. Pity about the price.

MRLK, 15 May 2024I definitely think this phone should be a few hundred pound... moreWell yes but so should s24 ultra and iphone 15 pro max. Why does this "phone should be cheaper" suggestion so abundant in Xperia comment section but not on other brands with overpriced phones? At least with Sony you get what you don't get elsewhere such as ip65, headphone jack, microSD slot, continuous zoom etc, not making excuses for expensive price but you must be fair and criticize others for being overpriced too.

Looks like Sony has gone down the oversaturation path as well.

Sony will be done soon. LGV30, V40, V50 all had QHD+ displays, then they downgraded the V60 to FHD+, and we all know how that ended.

I definitely think this phone should be a few hundred pounds cheaper but I guess getting the WH1000XM5 bundled in softens the blow a bit. I'm currently using a Pixel 7 Pro and sick of having to charge my phone every day. It might not be the best phone on the market but this phone does excite me feature wise compared to other brands.

Well, underwhelming is an understatement.
Some positive moves forward, but the number of Android updates is still well of the market leaders. I also suspect the software support (security patches and OS patches) will remain poor.
No mention of Snapdragon Sound and apt-x lossless in the review, though I'd be surprised if these features were missing. No HDR support in Netflix is a worry too. I wonder if the BT issues the the 1V suffered from Android 14 persist here too?
Good to see purported improvements to the camera software - can't blame Sony for only minor improvements to the camera hardware, as Samsung and Apple are guilty of the same.
A 1080p screen is not necessarily the worst thing ever, given the battery life boost, but it does not sit well with the super premium image and pricing, nor does the throttling of the overall performance.
This feels like a phone that should cost a good few hundred dollars/Euros/pounds less than it does. Pleased to see an improved headphone jack and the SD card retained, but the high cost means it is not at all competitive. Hard miss from me, Sony. 1V was a nightmare to own after the Android 14vl update and I can see nothing of substance here to make me come back to the Xperia clan. I wonder if there will ever be a VII series?

That battery life and the telephoto macro are both extremely impressive. The phone is overall okay, I'd rate it a 4.1-4.3★ instead of 4.5★, but it's got some extremely good points as well as some pretty underwhelming ones. So, I'd probably give it 4.2★ or 4.3★ instead of 4.1★, but still potentially possible. The biggest problem personally for me is that the screen is now 19.5:9 and is now 1080p. Keep it as 21:9, reduce the bottom bezels a lot (while still keeping the bottom stereo speaker setup intact), and change the resolution to 1440p instead (since 1644p is too much for no benefit but 1080p is too low). Also, the brightness increase is not enough, it needs to have comparable brightness levels to the Google Pixel 8 Pro (benchmark for brightness this year since it was the earliest phone to have such a high peak brightness figure). I personally prefer 20:9 as an aspect ratio, but 21:9 is part of Sony's design identity (as is the lack of a punchole for the selfie camera; the 3.5mm headphone jack; the microSD card reader; the grippy back texture; and the dual stereo speakers setup) and it stings for them to lose that.
