"especially with the whole easy DYI repairability angle, which suggest the phone courld stay in operation longer than usual"

Isn't it to comply with upcoming EU repairability rules ?

I could like the device and the reparability is something that other Oem´s should follow. Still with 3 year OS support.....It´s hard to justify the asking price..

300-400€ would certainly be more suited to a new brand that just hit the market. Many will say that it existed under Nokia, but the majority won´t know, and a new brand means start from scratch

And if course, with 800 nits, legibility is fine even when it's bright daylight.
            Thanks for pointing this out.

Wonderful phone sof ar, all 3 of our HMD skyline doing so great people often ask me what phone I have cause they are not used to such different design it’s quite fun to show it off to others. Of course mine black is less noticeable than my wife and daughter pink one but still looking good sadly no white otherwise l had chose the white.

                It's not DYI is DIY.

The review wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The camera is surprisingly good, but sub par battery life and performance isn't great and nor is the update policy. Yes you can refresh the battery I suppose which is good but it's still too pricey. The Nothing phone 2a blows this out the water, A55, Nord 4and you can get Pixels for less. It's just not a competitive option as much as I wanted it to be.

Nothing like Lumia devices in fact it's just an insult, just a Pulse design with clip on corners.

Claudesp33d, 06 Aug 2024I would never buy hmd again, my experience with nokia 6.2 w... moreMy brother has the nokia 7.2 and it works pretty much the same as in the beginning, it now pushes 5 years, of usage. So what where you saying?

Ottonis, 06 Aug 2024Very nice phone, especially for all the folks who love ver... moreThe funny part is that not a long time ago, smartphone flagships were "peak'ing" at around 800 nits, and that was very good, one could see the display very good in the sunlight according to the reviews here. They also mostly caused significant burn-ins when use at this hights for too long. Yet now there is a sudden problem with 1000 nits, it is not good enough and one can barerly see the information on the screen? I mean this is "whining at high levels", just like it was done everytime with the fairphone lineup, always downplaying the significant values of the device reviewed, in comparison to some paperspecs of some chinese devices, while never actually talking about the negatives of those devices it was beeing compared too. Like, tones of bloatware, crappy camera, spyware alert, and so on. Definetly biased, or who knows, maybe € are involved, or better said, demandings were not meet. HMD mostly never gave money for reviews and very few for advertising. Fairphone, the same.

Often I do wonder WHY companies release phone after phone that are just mediocre at best. They had just 1 job: Make it yellow and bring one of the best cameras (just 1!) to the back. There was no need for anything else to make this phone shine. If it would do this 1 thing perfectly, it would turn heads. But instead they, like ALL other companies, try to fill the mid-rang market, which is sadly fed by mostly xiaomi and, if you are rin for camera, pixel phones. No one will buy this or if, will keep it. Its just a waste of time and money. Bring the good phones back and if you are willing to compete, RISK SOMETHING!

Lime, 06 Aug 2024For some reason I want to bite the bullet with this phone. ... moreI would'nt say replacing, because fairphone has a lot of other stuff going under it's sleeve, but definetly a contender for the niche market of Fairphone, something i like, the more they are, the better the market, the lesser the e-waste, would also be nice to see some OS competition spike, like returning of MeeGo.

Pavel, 06 Aug 2024Another boring "cheap" phone, bring...nothing to ... moreActually, this one is one of the very few devices that brings somthing new to mobile market.

deRykcihC, 06 Aug 2024sooo... is the battery removable Not with your bare fingers like on old phones. It has glue underneath, and it's connected to the mainboard with a ribbon cable. It's serviceable but not removable.

This review seems a little hurried from gsmarena, both in eliding over strengths and weaknesses of the Skyline.

There is no overview of the camera app modes, including features such as focus peaking, handheld astrophotography or flash shot, nor any details of the Pro Mode.

If gsmarena tested further they would uncover some anomalies such as Pro Mode using the 2x tele camera for all zoom levels (auto mode uses the main cam for shots above 2x), they would also note that if you start video recording in 1x mode you cannot zoom but if you start at 2x you can. I thought there may be more testing of how the camera creates composites, or 'Capture Fusion' as HMD call it, which gsmarena covered well in their Nokia X30 review.

There is also no mention of haptics which are not great on the Skyline. Likewise, they briefly mention Qi2 but don't state it is the first Android to market that supports the standard and don't test the magnetic wireless charging.

There is an update scheduled for this month which HMD say will add 4K recording to the selfie camera, alongside other fixes and the Detox Mode.

I hope there is an accompanying video review that can address some of the omissions, I understand there is a deluge of new midrangers to cover at the moment.

(n.b. the UK pricing is much more sensible than the Euro, the 12/256GB Skyline has the same RRP as the 8/128GB Pixel 8a for example)
