Asus ROG Phone 9/9 Pro review

Where's the sustained GPU performance? The sustained CPU performance is quite disappointing to see. Even flagships from 2 years ago are beating it both in terms of peak performance as well as sustained performance, not to mention temperature. 99C is just unacceptable.

Best gaming phone in the industry? What I see are some lacklustre phones from Asus. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Asus Rog phone, but the phones they released this past 2 years just give me the impression of they are not even trying, or maybe trying in the wrong direction.
Focused on too many unnecessary "upgrades". The idea of an Anime Vision is interesting, but in pixel form? No thanks. The idea of using Anime Vision to play pixel games, unlock some hidden animations when encountering another Rog phone user are even more of a joke. Come on. You want me to buy a Rog phone just to try out the pixel games at the back of the phone? Try harder. I will consider buying one when you reach at least 720 x 480, only then I can customise something cool.
And hey, that's lots of accessories Asus is introducing here. Come on, I want to buy a good gaming phone, not good phone "accessories". It's like Asus is trying to say "hey, you can only experience 70% of it's potential if you only buy the phone. If you want to explore it's full potential, you need to buy the full set." Why not try harder to embed them into the phone? Even Nubia is trying a lot more harder in improving their phone's cooling system, rather than showing off their external cooler.
Then, AI to boost gaming performance? I may still kinda agree with picking up items in MMORPG, but assisting in ML sort of games? I don't know. Maybe just help me play and win the game? Isn't it better to use AI to boost the phone's performance? More energy saving, less heat dissipation/higher efficiency, longer phone lifespan, and so?
And the two variants offered is also a joke. Same hardware? For me, I usually won't spend my money on the lower variant, because if I want to spend, I will surely spend my money on the best, then use it for 5 to 8 years before considering a new one. But looking at these 2, it just makes me feel that even the pro+ is half cooked.
Is Asus trying too little? Or thinking too hard? Why not try focusing more on cooler design, bigger screen size, bigger battery size, premium cooling? Trying learning the good stuffs from Nubia Redmagic, or else Asus is gonna be the next Black Shark.

Pricing is wack. It's nowhere near reasonable. Samsung gets away with nonsense MSRPs because they offer discounts and trade-in bonuses like the sky is falling, but Asus is going to actually charge that MSRP. And 1080p screen! Wow.

X100 ultra hum... moreI've seen side by sides by this site and I'd suggest you check ben's gadget review video and some others
IMO the x100 ultra didn't humiliate x200 pro. The Dynamic range was just slightly better and on 2x even after pixel peeping just ever so slightly more detail on ultra.
But this is one review. Other reviews show noticeably better dynamic range overall, there are situations where x100 ultra will be slightly better but that's rare and in low light the ultra simply gets beat by x200 pro
It's a smaller sensor but it's built on a faar more advanced node and is able to process things way more quickly, I think this balances out the smaller physical size and even edges out the lyt 900 sensor in the ultra
That's just my take

Gaming phones have usually picked snapdragon because there was no other alternative. Now that there is, I would expect some gaming phones will start to use Dimensity as an alternative. The GPU scores favour Dimensity and games rely on GPU more than the CPU.

rog 6 with motherboard failure issue here which apparently pretty common according to their service center and cost 90% of the phone to fix. a little googling show it's common even on their pc product and will this apply to this phone too?

I will never get the appeal of these gaming phones when any mainstream flagship like the Galaxy S24, iPhone 16, Xiaomi 14, OnePlus 12, and iQOO 12 can run 99% of today's mobile games just fine.
I stand by my ground that phones are not and will never be suited for playing visually intensive and mechanically complex AAA games. Phones are meant for casual experiences like Candy Crush, Subway Surfers, and Clash of Clans.
Phones cannot have adequate cooling systems, touch screen controls suck, and their displays are too small. Yes there are solutions like using a cooling fan, gamepads, and USB video out, but they are not practical and defeat the portable nature of phones.
I'd much rather buy an ROG Ally X if I wanted a dedicated gaming device.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2024Very doubtful, it needs much faster clock speeds if it'... moreYou kinda forgot that SD 8 ELITE uses PC micro-cpu architecture hence why they can go above 4 ghz. Meanwhile, The D9400 still uses ARM cores hence the lower clock speeds

With normal mode, you got worse CPU performance, even antutu is on par with 8g2, but a good GPU performance.
With Xmode, CPU performance is good, better than 9400, antutu is good, but, GPU performance got worse, stability also got worse. Phone heating a lot
Seems like 8 elite problem here, OR ROG problem

Promising..Not for me, but definitely promising
I hated the last "CON" posted if it throttles on the pro w/o the gear,
is it a no brainer on the vanilla?
If you remember GW-DOS, it would be cool if something similar worked with Android.

DR is not parameter. Sensors used by industrial purposes have higher DR than tegular cameras, still do not provide images with higher quality.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2024Surely the dimensity 9400+ will be on top of every chartsVery doubtful, it needs much faster clock speeds if it's going to compete and the fact the dimensity 9400 tops out at 3.6ghz means it probably won't go above 3.9 ghz without losing it's efficiency. It would have been interesting to see a dimensity gaming phone this year but the fact snapdragon elite has been picked on all gaming phones kind of shows that snapdragon is the winner for this year..if you want a gaming phone that is. Might get myself a galaxy s25+ this year seeing as its got snapdragon elite.

I like it how the realme destroys the most powerful ROG phone on antutu with its x mode switched off. Personally I wouldn't like to be frying the crap out of a £1500 smartphone just to get the best performance.
