A good testing for when these erasers get compared again in the future (if possible) is compare how they are when it comes to live concerts. Say taking picture of bands and removing people video recording the show from the pictures.

          Samsung the GOAT.

Guess what? Object removal was even in my Galaxy Note10 and it wasnt even labeled as AI and requires no internet connection!

I swear these AI shenanigans are just loads of corporate talk most of the time. Make the battery and software more efficient. Make the phone run less hot in demanding tasks. Make the phones slimmer or whatever.

There are many rooms for improvement and they chose making fake images out of nothing.

I like how xiaomi was second best in this test, still you gave it 1 pro and 4 cons :P It did A LOT better job than google / apple

Its crazy how people willfully give up their personal information without knowing where it will end up. Sadly it seems that being privacy conscious has become passe and few care about it.
It would have been so helpful if the article had delved into this issue in terms of what device has the best on-device functionality and what are the terms (and possible consequences) of using cloud AI.
And if you say "I have nothing to hide", you haven't grasped the meaning of privacy. To put it simply, Its why we have doors in our bathrooms. To keep personal matters private.

Mactronix, 14 Apr 2025I have an Oppo and refuse to use the camera app ever since ... moreThat's why I never buy oppo.
I always buy xiaomi because they're the most easiest phones to root.
And once you got root, you can delete all that spyware and other crapware and xiaomi phone still works lol. Boots up real quick without all that AI and find my phone junk. Even removed the security manager and phone still works flawless.
                          Xiaomi forever!

HopeFilledIdiot, 11 Apr 2025Even Vivo and OPPO have these object erasers now. Should... moreI have an Oppo and refuse to use the camera app ever since it implemented the AI eraser feature.
The permissions and access it requested for using the eraser was just pure data mining.
I get that this is how AI works and it needs data to grow and expand the library of results and actions it can draw on. AI is essentially one big IFTT algorithm and not actually AI at all.

There is the option to not use the AI eraser, however Oppo refuse to make it clear and the wording suggests that there is no guarantee they wont just gather the data anyway if you choose to use the photo app and not the AI eraser.

i grabbed these images and tried them all on my Honor Magic V3 and MY GOD how good it is! It beats everything here, even Samsung!
Only weak points are gradients, the fade is not perfect on a simple sky, but object replacements, faces, furniture, windows, pavements, stairs, anything.. it kills it! I only recently got that update and feature and i did not expect it to be this good. It's a shame you didn't include it and give it the praise it deserves.
I thought they partnered with google, so expected similar level of it. I never heard of them partnering with Samsung to get the results this good, so i honestly don't know what their secret is there. ..btw, i used brush for object marking, not lasso.

I'm impressed with Xiaomi results. Yes, it's a con that internet is necessary and also it means your pics are stored somewhere in China and nobody knows how they are used but in few cases it does the job really well. Sometimes even too good (like with additional bottle :-) ). I use Google time to time and so far had only few disappointing cases but from sample pics I see it's lagging behind. A lot.

This is excellent and one of the best pieces I've seen on this website. It would be good to have other comparisons, particularly call quality - how many towers can a phone access? They are phones. It would be great if this was incorporated into the regular testing, as a lot of phones are useless outside of cities and large towns. SOC and mobile phone manufacturers suffer no penalty for making phones that are barely acceptable as phones and are often worse than phones from 2018. Reviewers tend to concentrate on how fast/screen brightness and so on, rather than practical aspects. Others might be how does the phone deal with heavy loads, can you get it to crash, or how does it operate under warmer conditions such a hot day (or simulated in front of a heater). Great piece though, and a surprise that Samsung beat Google easily.

Apple's offline results were pretty impressive!!
                                    Xiaomi's as well!
                                    Google disappointed!

Google Magic Editor (NOT Magic Eraser) does better than all of them
