Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 review: A new experience

23 December 2008
There’s a lot to fall for in Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Possibly the hottest looker of a PocketPC is also heavy on skill. Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top. The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized...

I personally think WinMo is old hat and either needs a complete redesign or just be ditched altogether. It's slow and to be honest, just too complicated for your average user.

In retrospect there was no other choice given the price difference
I have been waiting for this phone since the announcement
In Barcelona. I opted for the G1 and am now on my third
G1 phone. I will wait for the price to drop some and then get
It. Thanks for the review GSMArena

Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noel, Felix Navidad!

Guys, I don't really agree with you, but anyway, I am more with this guy:
        "Keyboard

The keyboard itself is quite possibly the best keyboard on a smart phone ever. That’s quite a big claim to make, but let me explain why. The build quality is fantastic; the keys feel strong and robust whilst also being easy to use. The combination of metal and this robustness gives a very satisfying feel to the keyboard. It reinforces the X1’s status and makes you feel that you are using a handset that is at the top of the range. If I had one niggle with the keys it was that the tactile feedback could have been a little stronger, but overall it was perfectly fine. When you slide the keyboard out it does so with a feeling of weight, not heaviness, but of satisfying weight that makes you realise this isn’t a cheap product quickly and poorly built, but rather a handset that has been laboured over and wants to present itself well. The keys don’t feel cramped and I was able to use it to type both comfortably and quickly. That’s one of the things that you really notice about the overall design of the handset, the hardware has been made to look and feel good, but hasn’t been forced to sacrifice usability in the process."
Don't praise HTC too much ! :)... it is not that great like X1. I mean, they have their contribution, but that's all, it's a Sony Ericsson's phone, anybody can see that.

Martin, 24 Dec 2008I still dont understand why people set the iphone so hihg, ... moreI couldn't agree more!!
This X1 is at least 50 times better than iPhone.
Apple products are just over-rated. The absence of AD2P from a 'music iPhone' is just a foolish unthinkable flaw...

I still dont understand why people set the iphone so hihg, come on the iphone only look good and have a good userface, but has poor sofware(appel), poor camera, poor battery, the phone is only good if you want to use it for funny things such as sounds and so on.
Samsung, HTC, and Sony ericsson are way ahead.

"the QWERTY keyboard of the Touch Pro is well ahead of what the X1 has to offer. The Touch Pro accelerometer and active magnetic stylus are small but nice touches that add to the allure"

those a huge features if you consider a neck and neck comp between Xperia and Touch Pro, yea i agree with the guy bellow; the Touch Pro gives a smaller feel overall as compared to Xperia which in real is really tall, the only negative is that touch Pro is really thick, you defiantly see that when you compare the two not just in looks but when you hold the two

GSMarena its no secret you guys favoring Xperia and thats ok everyones got likes but when you say stuff like the touch pro is bigger and that a accelerometer which allows great gameplay and not just auto rotate UI is nothing and even considering the that you listed it as a Disadvantage for X1... its starts getting alittle a.nnoying

To all those ppl commenting about the high price: It's supposed to be a *PREMIUM* phone like the TOuch HD, of course it's going to be expensive!

As a lucky owner of an X1, it definitely *looks* and *feels* like it is worth the price - the use of brushed metal and weight gives it a solid feel vs the Touch (HD / Pro).

I've checked out the Touch Pro in store and it feels bulkier even if it's supposed to be similar to the X1. Being shorter, the Touch Pro's keyboard also feels too cramped so I don't like it.

Did wish the X1 had a accelerometer though... yes it's a gimmick but a cool one!

As a first time Windows MObile user the default setup is quite un-finger friendly, but the beauty of Windows Mobile phones is that there is a massive friendly dev community churning out quality (free!) software for those phones which fixes a lot of the issues, and in this respect I feel it beats the iPhone hands down (since the AppStore is really just another way to squeeze more money out of your wallet)

I don't understand one thing. In the review they said HTC Touch Pro is larger than Xperia. But HTC size is 102 x 51 x 18.1 mm, whereas Xperia size is 110.5 x 52.6 x 17 mm. So Xperia is indeed taller and larger and only 1mm thinner. So Xperia has a much bigger size than HTC. I don't know why they wrote it the other way around in the review.

All I have to say is WOW. I haven't spent that much time reading reviews of it yet because a) I won't be able to afford it for probably a year and b)I really only read GSMarena's reviews. That being said, excellent review guys, one of the best in a while. And honestly, all those close up shots sold me on it. Definitely one of the best looking phones I have ever seen. Simply gorgeous
