Anonymous, 20 May 2009I am thinking of getting this phone (samsung s8300), but am... moreYou can use an MP3 file to set as your ringtone...
but here's the weird thing with any ringtone, whether it's the manufacturer one or your mp3... when your phone rings the volume defaults to 1/8 for about 1 second, then it rings to the setting which you have put it at. For e.g. out and about I have set the highest volume possible on the phone which is 8/8. When someone rings me, the first second of the ringtone rings at 1/8 th of the volume and then rings at the volume I had set it at.
I thought I had incorrectly set the ringing style i.e. ascending ringtone but apparently Samsung say this is a feature.... lmao!
Another point I would like to make about the texting interface. It's not great. You don't have an arrow cursor to go back a few words if you realise you have made a spelling mistake. But then when you try and click on the screen for the cursor to move you back to the word you want to rectify, it doesn't happen!! It goes somewhere else.
Another gripe with the text messaging is that if you use the T9 dictionary. I mean most of us do. But this is so silly, you would think Samsung wouldn't have this problem after so many years of making mobile phones... but anyway.
Let's for instance take the word 'might' and 'night'. You would type those words using the S8300 touchscreen right. So then let's say you want to Then if you want to add a punctuation mark after the word 'night' to say something like '?' or even a fullstop. Once you put the punctuation mark, the word defaults back to the original 1st option of the entry i.e. the word 'might?' instead of 'night?'.
This is an absolute nightmare when you are trying to compose somethign quickly. There are ways around it, but it is loooooong!! This happens with all the phones btw, not just mine. Check the Samsung support forums for yourself!
The manufacturer is exchanging my mobile phone because there is a fault with my outlook synchronisation but I will sell it on ebay when it comes back. Luckily I can revert back to my old phone which was a Sony Ericsson W890i... and to be honest I forgot how easy texting should be and was on the sony rather than the Samsung.

I've asked this question to a numbe... moreit's A-GPS, it means that it works via the gsm-antennas from your provider. that's also the reason it doesn't work exactly, it calculates your position via the 3 nearest antennas, with a possible fault of 45 meters...
you can simply see if the device uses data when opening an application, the blue "3G"-sign in the right upper-corner turns red when using data..

Anonymous, 19 May 2009ok so you are not at all satisfied with the phone??Haha...
Well I suppose I could live with the problems the phone has, apart from the Outlook synchronisation problem.
I am due to get an exchange from Samsung soon, because they say that my phone is faulty with regard to the outlook problem, but not the others.
This is making me look more closely at the HTC Diamond 2 at the moment, but am not sure whether I want to go down the Windows mobile route..

After having this phone since 1st April, I feel I am in a good position to judge this phone accurately..
So I will start with some points that I have noticed.
Battery Life - Well I must say that Samsung have ill-equipped this phone with a rubbish battery. Although they say that it is an AMOLED screen etc etc, you don't notice the difference except for better quality of screen.. but the battery really suffers.
I have turned off 3G, turned off bluetooth, and only really use it for calls and text (low usage) and the battery life is appalling.
Interface - sluggish at times, especially when scrolling. Text interface is poor, because there is no scrolling through the text message once you have input it. And if you touch the screen where you want to modify the word, it goes somewhere else.
Synchronisation with Outlook - dreadful. HAve had major issues with this and logged it with the manufacturer adn apparently no one else is having this trouble... except when you look in the forums on the manufacturer website I am NOT the only one.
Sound quality during call - Not great. Sometimes midway through a conversation, all of a sudden the other person's voice goes high pitch and it really startles you in the conversation. Have been unable to find a decent volume to adhere to because the sound levels and quality are different each time. Very unusual.
Widgets - gradually more and more widgets are becoming available to download, but they aren't very useful.
ANything else just ask and I will endeavour to respond..

trew, 17 May 2009Does the Samsung S8300 UltraTOUCH perform poorly in Audio q... moreWell I own this phone and can honestly say that the review for sound quality is accurate.
The phone has dreadful sound during calls. Although I haven't really used the phone for MP3, I can honestly tell you not to expect wonders there either.
Samsung aren't great when it comes to sound, it's the same with their TVs.

I've asked this question to a number of other people and i had mixed responses. Some say the same as you and others say it's completely free.
I'm confused!
Why does it need to connect to the internet if it has a GPS receiver? Sat navs don't use internet. do they?

I know the phone has built in GPS.
But i just wanted to know if it costs to use it?
When you use the GPS, does it connect to the internet?
When you access the GPS, the JAVA logo comes up first while it's loading.
I thought JAVA applications were free to use? (like the games).
Using a cars GPS doesn't cost, so why would it cost to use the phones one?
Any help/info would be most appreciated.
