Nokia N97 review: Lock, stock and touch

16 June 2009
They don’t get any bigger than that. A launch of this caliber can aptly be called inauguration day. The release of Nokia N97 is the N-series counter-move that geeks have been waiting for since November. Easily one of the most...

moreover, if someone who is not in my contacts calls me, the call log keeps only the number - but then if i put the number in my contacts, then immediately the call log shows the name already.

I keep my software update, but this was the same since the original soft version i bought my n95 with...

I used to have this problem when using my 6120c and it doesn't happen with my Touch Dual now. Its a S60 problem. Sometimes, a call or SMS and it only shows the number not the name. Sometimes it shows the name. So gets quite irritating. Now you have name next thing it doesn't have name. I think they patched it up already but I moved to another platform before the problem was resolved. This for a contact that appears in your phone book.

        Anonymous, 18 Jun 2009I completely agree with rahul. A disappointment. Definitely... moreAgree. The N97 was way overhyped. In hand, it didn't look as impressive. Boot it up the "home" screen that greets you make it look more like a social networking phone than a true blood business power house. Also they could have worked on that hinge a bit and create more space for bigger keys. That said, a quick look at the selling price and this is the 2 conclusions;
        1) The N97 is meant to promote the S60 Touch not as a genuine contendor for phone of the year.
        2) The N97 seems to be targeted at first time touchscreen S60 users. Those looking for a new Nokia but don't like the XpressMusic 5800. Those looking for a N series.
Which I think they nailed it pretty well. A Nokia fan friend of mine absolutely adore the phone. I personally didn't find it all that impressive. I mean being bias here, seen it done it with the TouchPro, Tytn2 and now the Touch Pro 2.
And the price is just unbelievable for something so well built. Nokia must be cutting their margins just to make sure the S60 Touch market sky rockets.

Both are displayed when phone is ringing. The name is not saved into call log. Only number is saved. Win Mobile phones save name into call log. If you do not see callers' name on N95 when phone is ringing it only means your operator does not support it.

N95 does not. It displays name when call is coming in, but if you missed call you have no way to see name in call log. Was it fixed?

i tried the N97 in Carrefore mall in dubai, the device is so fast and doesnt hang or anything... the screen is super responsive not sensitive as the iphone which by the way is much better than the iphone this way u cant click anything accidentally... the slide mechanism is so well designed i slide the keyboard in an agressive way and i liked it so well done...
it costs 2929 AED in Dubai which is a fair price for this device..

"nokia is a conservative company and they are sticking on their current specs and compare when did the 97 was announced? Late last year? And when did the omnia hd was? This actually gives samsung to spice up their hd. It feels good to have the best pack inside the phone but think again it is still a give and take thing... And nokia being a european company they always test their products under stringent conditions and different climates..."

How do you know Samsung and Nokia QC are different? then how do you explain the long queue at nokia care in singapore compares to the queue at Samsung Care. Samsung has half of nokia market share but nokia customer showing up at Nokia care is 3 to 4 times more. Im from singapore too and i know the situation.

For Samsung Omnia HD alto they could spice up the device and nokia n97 was annouce before that. 1 thing samsung is good at is they annouce the phone and it will be available within a few months. While Nokia and SE, when they announce a certain phone, they would drag half a yr to 3/4 a year before making it available to open market. thats a tragic as technology would have already advanced more like what u said, Omnia HD and N97. Even samsung jet, annouce this monday and its avaiable immediately. This kind of logistic planning if best for customer. You wouldn't wan to buy a technology thats 1 yr old, do you?

I really dont think the N97 stands upto the expectations of the users.
If this phone would not have been from the Nokia stable it would not have received so much of attention, any one who is smart enough to know that at the same price you can get a much better phone. And simply having Media capabilities is not enough at this level.
It lacks the precision of some of the devices which are available.
Its not Nokia's fault, it's just that Nokia has a lot to catch up too in the Touch screen market. They are actually the last to jump into this. and its kinda sad that they are selling phone with such dicy UI and claim to be Top of the game.
I would still rate the Iphone 3G S as the phone to beat.
And if you think its wrong to compare... then we should remember those days when we compared every other phone to a Nokia...
Sadly this for touch screen Nokia is a follower in the market, while its competitors are leading the path.
The Nokia have given N97 just 477GHz which is good for the day... but for the same price you can get handsets which are capable of much more....
And apart from Nokia loyalist I dont think any one would say that this phone is most advanced piece of communication device available.
