Nokia N97 review: Lock, stock and touch

16 June 2009
They don’t get any bigger than that. A launch of this caliber can aptly be called inauguration day. The release of Nokia N97 is the N-series counter-move that geeks have been waiting for since November. Easily one of the most...

Just another bug ridden symbian Nokia, like the N95, N96....

        www.n97geeks.com/General/nokia-n97-stress-test.html
i wonder if gsmarena would perform a test like that?
        hmmm... not likely

Michael, 22 Jun 2009You complain (on page 3) about the D-Pad being on the left.... moreI agree with Michael, I'm used to the d-pad on the left side on various consoles including gaming on pc which I use the w,a,s,d keys to move(I'm a right hand user). It's a button that generally doesn't get used as much as others and so doesn't require quick repetitive pressing which the right thumb does best if you're right handed. Especially when this is a 'touch' phone, why scroll up, down, left and right to get to something when you can just 'press' on the screen?

You complain (on page 3) about the D-Pad being on the left.

                What's wrong with that??
I'm right handed, I'm used to d-pads being on the left... Tell Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and all past and present game controller makers that the d-pad is on the wrong side.

Ok this is not a "Gaming Device" but you can play games on it.

Seriously... I look at the d-pad and feel at home when it's on the left, in fact, I challenge you to show me a right sided d-pad.

Great review on the N97, very detailed and usefull, thanks a lot!
I have one question, since I'm not realy sure about the color I'm going to choose. On the pictures of the black version on this website the chrome around the edge of the telephone looks broze, rather than the expected silver. Is this the natural color, or does it just look like that due to the way the light shines on it?

                        thanks in advance

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2009 moreover, if someone who is not in my contacts calls me, ... moreaaa i understand what you mean now...

but i hardly consider this an issue, by the way - at least not important to me. I did not know also the Windows did that.

As far as N97 is considered, I am a very satisfied user of N95, my second phone is BB Bold (which is a different, but a very good phone - I used N95 as a main phone, and BB Curve as a second phone, but with the Bold - I switched it and my BBold now is my main phone).

I had intention to switch to N97, but now I am reluctant to do so, it just seems not worth it to spend the money on n97, as it does not offer anything in addition to my (second phone) N97. If it is touch I would like to get, then obviously I can look at better phones, not excluding iPhone (which I used for a month or so before)...

Finally, and not discussing the price here, I think n97 is a good phone if this is the first high-end phone of Nokia you are going to use. Otherwise, I do not consider the upgrade an worth option.

The n5800 which feels cheap does everything this phone can at less than half the price. This is definitely not a $700 usd phone for me.

moreover, if someone who is not in my contacts calls me, the call log keeps only the number - but then if i put the number in my contacts, then immediately the call log shows the name already.
                                    ------------

You have the same problem I described. The name you assigned yourself is not the same as CID name. Nokia need to fix the problem with saving CID name in call log when the calling number is not in contact list.

You're looking at one of them right now. N97 has a built-in PDF-reader as well as a 3,5' nHD screen (640x360).
