Nokia N900 review: A new hope

26 November 2009
It’s crystal clear by now that the Nokia N900 has almost nothing to do with the traditional Nseries values. The full QWERTY side-slider may look similar to its double-digit mates but the Maemo experience is completely different...

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2009well, the mockup is fake, but talking to nokia they dont sa... moreOf course there is one coming, call it N920 or something else. That will be the Maemo 6 device.

The point is that people are talking and recommending practices without really knowing what it will look like, or what will be the specs. Will it have MMS? Capacitive screen? Keyboard? Guesses...

And the point of it not being an N series (3xiY person):

- they're marketing it as their "flagship" device
- it is a phone
- the shape is on par (blurred the tablet/phone).
- and their model is an "N" followed by numbers.

What else did you expect? It is the successor of their high end Nxx + Symbian line. It is N series... they made it be that.

very impressed. though i don't think the size is bad. this is a tablet at heart and in that sense it is very slim. compared to the n810 etc.

unfortunately i think people maybe viewing it too much as a new nseries smartphone but its just not in that category.

I also beleive that nokia has put hardware and not the software to support it so that the maemo community can play without hardware limitations, eg IR and FM radio.

I am not too worried on a personal note regarding the radio as i think that a device like this is more suited to internet radio where i can pull up any station i like.

well done nokia, a good addition to the port folio, one i will invest in after seeing the possibilities :)

martinkem, 27 Nov 2009i love the multi-tasking part of the Nokia N900..which is b... moretry samsung jet, and you wont miss capacative screen at all... multi-touch is just a gimmic... One finger zoom is far more handy, cause it allows single hand use.
So the down side is that Nokia cant make as good displays as Samsung, but its not about the technology of resistiv screens, its all about the implementation.

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2009your wrong about the camera at this stage. the 12 megapixe... moreCOOL STORY BRO
But last time i checked A4 is far from "standard" for printing pictures, it's standard document printing size. And again, a cell phone camera is a cool feature, nothing more. Most people use it to snap a quick pic when they don't have a camera on them, not for serious photography. none of this would ever be worth printing in the first place, let alone on A4.
But i can already imagine you being the kind of person that relies on your 12MP phone camera for all pictures, so you have to convince yourself that it's actually of any real use.

Honestly, so many of you are missing the point.

This is an INTERNET TABLET, NOT A PHONE

It just happens to do calls well because it's a Nokia.

If you are looking for a touchscreen phone, then go get one!

I'll take the web browsing, multiple apps at once, the bevvy of features, the video, the Maemo OS, and the potential for future apps on an OS that developers are already raving about before the damn thing even comes out yet!

Go head, get your iPhone, your blackberrys and your HTC's, go head no one is stopping you.

But for something that doubles as a netbook and phone, all while having internet connectivity at all times, I'll gladly take the N900!

PS - go to maemo.org, and look at the apps that are already coming out, that include the MSOffice suite for free among others...

Nokia is facing the unenviable task of telling to their suppliers that company’s first Maemo 5 powered phone has been delayed due the overwhelming demand and that they will not be receiving units until December 4th!

A very curious thing on the Eldar’s review, is that he names a ”Nokia N920” that doesn’t have keyboard. The review is a bit long, but under the ”Text-Input” tab you can see that he refers to this unknown device which is a Maemo powered device and apparently lacks a keyboard. Very interesting that Nokia is planning on having multiple devices running Maemo 5 and not just the N900. Stay tuned for more news on the Maemo 5 platform and the rumor on the N920!

                                    - He created a phone to show his preferences.
                                    - He designed the physical phone, that's why he didn't care putting the old Maemo UI (obviously, the N920 wouldn't have that UI, but at least the one on the N900).
                                    - Finally, I belive, Nokia wouldn't put out a design so close to that of the iPhone. All black would be more reasonable, and not a simple "clone".

The famous leaked pictures from Nokiaport.de are not what it seems. It was designed by a person who never claimed that it would be the new Maemo 6 device. Call it imagination, user fan art, but not N920.
