1) Can someone please explain how to install applications downloaded from the Android Market to my X10 from the computer?
You will need a program like Astro File Manager to install the apps you have downloaded from the market. Put the APK file to your SD card in the folder named download...
2) Also, not all apps are free, are they? in fact I found that most apps are paid ones.
Many are paid ones but there are versions of it that is ad sponsored, you can use for free...
3) My X10i does not have the Android Market software built-in it. from where can i download that?
You can de-brand it to UK Generic to get the missing Android Market application...
4) Finally, i bought my X10 from Dubai & i am using it in India. So when will the software update for my phone be released? should i look for updates in India or UAE???
Latest news is in the end of October. You can update it anywhere. Using SE update software or PC Companion...

dont buy this phone before reading sony ericsson's blog. here is the link. just check it. i myself have this phone and is feeling like a loser now. this people at sony are all liars. they said they will give android update in q3. but even after october we haven't received a single update where as all other phones have been updated to android 2.2. this phone doesn't have multi touch. no flash. no front camera. only 65k colors. all its rivals got 16million colors. some even got amoled or super amoled screen. thi x10 only got a basic screen. just read the sony ericsson blog and see how people who already bought this phone have to say about this phone and the terrible customer support we are getting from sony ericsson. once you buy this phone then you are on your own. there won't be any updates or customer support for this phone. just check this. http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2010/09/23/update-on-updates/comment-page-38/#comments
never ever buy this phone. go for iphone/ htc desire/ desire hd/ evo/ legend/ droid/ samsung galaxy. but never ever xperia's.

Simon, 12 Sep 2010You did a lot of research and yet you bought the X10?
Th... more@ Simon - Well written points and I'd say you hit the hammer on the Xperia X10 - KUDOS !!! That being said I'm a happy owner of a "free" Xperia on ATT's network and the coverage here in NJ is excellent. The point here is "free".
@jishnu - 29K for a phone which is "outdated" according to Android standards sounds...expensive? Personally I don't think it's in the 10-15K category..Anything more is being generous :)
Anyways, I still love and am enjoying my "free" phone with all the supposedly negative points it has.

jishnu, 08 Sep 2010It has been three months now that i am using an Xperia X10i... moreYou did a lot of research and yet you bought the X10?
The only reason you should ever get the X10 will be the looks. Like most Sony products they usually have the best appearance.
Other than this it has close to no merit over other high end Androids. Best camera? Best camera software? Nope there is XT720, Galaxy Beam, Evo etc
Media Scape&Time Scape? If you really wanted these you can easily flash these on to another android with a custom rom :/
OS - However smooth it runs it is still 1.6. Comparing Windows 98 to Windows 7 is .... It lacks so many features and compatibility with new apps it is not funny.
Battery - Really? Is got a standard 1500 mAh battery, very average.
Screen - This has to be the most failure part of the phone. Lack of multitouch support just totally kills it. No possible future firmware, software can fix this as it is a hardware issue. And TFT screens.... you will have to be blind to think a Super Amoled is not miles better than this. The only other screen type who people can compare and judge by personal preference will be the Retina display from Ip4. Even then the Retina display is only better for reading texts. In all other aspects Super Amoled dominates.

It has been three months now that i am using an Xperia X10i (no different from an X10. I guess the "i" is added to the name of the model sold in asia pacific). I researched a lot before buying it, as i do for any high end product i buy. And i must say that i am happy with my decision.
Undoubtedly, X10 is a costly phone. undoubtedly it is surrounded by a lot of controversies, be it its so called "outdated" android version, or the presumably "bad" battery backup, or the space related specs. There are supposedly other contemporary phones with better specs (nexus, desire, HD2), value for money (samsung wave, droid/milestone), display (galaxy) or the legacy (wht other than the iphone), but when it came down to the process of ownership, x10 beat them all handsdown.
Price: In India, x10 costs Rs.29000, which is a tad higher than the price of galaxy, but less thn iphn 4, or desire. so price positioning is OKish, and to a starry-eyed me, its 5000 too less! :)
Looks: Here, it kills the competition. I own a white x10, and it becomes an object of desire as soon as i take it out of pocket. combined with a thin white body, 4" mineral tft display, scratchproof back and the slight curve accentuating at the top, i have never seen a phone more breathe-taking. Not even nexus. Then again, looks are subject to personal preferences.
Display: The screen is 4 inch TFT mineral, probably bigger than any othr android phone in the market (nexus, desire, galaxy feature 3.7". HD2 features 4.2", but its windows based. Dnt know abt N8). Yes, it is not AMOLED, but who cares? personally i find amoleds to be too much saturated in terms of colors, rendering an unreal appearance. But again, its subject to personal preferences.
Camera: Good pics. sharp pics. clear pics. 8MP pics. The cam software is advanced. Very customized cybershot applications. smile detection (in a phone!), touch capture. But the best part is the macro mode. u have to buy the phone to understand the novelty! :)
Software: yes, the phone is 1.6. not a 2.2 or even a 2.1. but how does that matter anyway, when it is working flawlessly and smooth, probably a notch smoother than most other smartphones? I am yet to see it hang even once. I have never experienced any call drops, have run atleast 100 applications from android market with 0% failure and fast, uninterrupted internet surfing, bluetooth or wifi. How does it matter if it is devoid of multitouch? How many other phones have timescape and mediascape? all in all, the android version wont matter if we talk about the usuability of the features. and i personally find the customized 1.6 to be better looking than the higher versions in desire, nexus or droid. And yes!! a SE customized HD video recording enabled 2.1 is around the corner (by end of sept is wht our guess guesses).
Battery: Being a banker, my phone is off the cradle for the major part of my day. also, my cubicle is in the basement where the signal strength is low. after the recent software update, the battery runs for atleast 1.5 days, even after my heavy usuage consisting of atleast 1.5 hrs of daily talktime, surfing, gaming and "low-quality signal stress". add to it the high resolution and the big, big screen.i find the talktime to be reasonable, if not better than most of the other high density display phones. one of my droid owning friend charges the phone more frequently than i do. And he has a smaller screen.
CONS:
a. I am yet to find a way to attach a document with the mail.
b. I am yet to figure out multiple selection.
c. Memory can be extended to 16 gb, whch is less than the standard specs of 32 gb in most othr smartphones.
d. Should have a bigger RAM
disclaimer: the above writeup is as per what i have experienced with my x10. by the very virtue of them, experiences can be different with
different individuals. This is not a comparison, but a process of sharing my personal experience.
