Samsung S8500 Wave review: Hello, world!

01 June 2010
Smartphone for the masses or feature phone of the future? Samsung would gladly have it either way. The question rather is, will the Bada OS keep up the pace of its debut device. We’ve been following the new smart platform since its first. Update: Samsung Dive overview added...

Hey guy's i've just gotten this phone and i think this review is a little harsh, but overall its on the spot. For me this phone is all i need as an important aspect which is almost always left out is looks, this phone looks very good and the inbuilt features are amazing, the only issue i see with this phone and the os is that it may be a bit difficult for the older generation, as i've also gotten my mum this phone and she's only happy about the looks/screen, doesnt get much else out of it, so if their was a way in settings to change how optimised the ui is that would be a great advantage. overall tho this phone is amazing and if your between the ages of 16-24 this is the best phone for you and if your older then you'll still appreciate the looks and professional style + bussines oriantated software. As the person below said the apps arnt a major thing in this phone but in the future i'm sure it will be even if only samsung will be developng the apps. I just saw a video of some games developed by ubi soft..... one word amazing

I have been reading up on various phone reviews now a couple of weeks, and i am seriously confused about the constant (hysterical) focus on "apps", both from reviewers as well as consumers. I dont get it at all, especially not when apps are given such a big importance when (professionally) reviewing phones. I mean, is it a phone, or a toy its supposed to be? Who older than 15 years of age needs (wants?) for example to play games on a phone? Why arent reviewers focusing at critical aspects of a phone, like in-call quality, battery time and other things that actually matters? Seriously, many reviews nowadays dont even touch the subject of in-call quality, on a review of a PHONE. Who cares about the volume on the mediaplayer, its a PHONE! Jeez! Its all about apps, mediaplayers, "social networking" and so on, things that should be considered as "gizmos" or "extras" just for fun but not more than that. Personally i wish i could buy a phone where i could choose to not have any apps, games, social networking, music players, movie players, maybe not even cameras but instead a price-cut or maybe better, more useful PHONE-related features such as better in-call quality, noise-cancelling mics, long batterytime and such things. It feels bad that we all consumers 1) dont get the choice of removing all this junk and 2) end up collective paying for it via all other phones pricetags. Even if i would buy a phone that dont have any apps, i still would be paying for the apps indirectly.

Sure, i know there are probably useful apps out there too, but i hope i made my point clear anyway, i just had get this off my mind. This phone seems kinda great imo, i just reacted badly to once again seeing all this app-mania.

Great review GSM Arena, for a great devices. I don't like and don't want Samsung device (dislike support of this company) but features are very very interesting.

Hope SE can make an High-end device like that very soon !

Steve, 01 Jun 2010This looks great but is totally pointless. Samsung should h... morebecause this one is cheaper than galaxy s. so they hope that because of the hardware people buy it after all so they can continue their no support strategies.

Multitasking ? One application at once, this is not multitasking.
You can instal many applications, but only one of them can be run in real time.

Great hardware, very poor software :(

You are testing FW JEB and there is out the JEF version (4 versions newer).
About text adjusting while surfing the web it works with double tap (at least with JEF version -proof in youtube).
Comparing Vivaz and Wave is unbelivable: they play in two very different leagues (Wave is far far better in every aspect than Vivaz except in camera-photo and NUMBER of apps,i.e. if you find a game like Asfalt or Hawx for Symbian come and tell).
Waiting for your sound test, thx it was what I expected since it has the same HW as Galaxy S.

I find your real conclusion is: beware of Bada (could improve or not), everything else OK.

What annoys me is that you say it has "solid multimedia capabilities": do you know of a better equipped multimedia phone?

Correct me if I´m wrong but this is the ONLY one in the market supporting Divx, Xvid, mkv,up to 720p, almost every audio format all this with the best quality screen on the market and one of the best music quality OUT OF THE BOX.Know any other similiar??? Android, Symbian or Iphone?

                        Little biased review, IMHO

This looks great but is totally pointless. Samsung should have stuck with android only like the Galaxy S. What is the point of the Wave when the galaxy S as almost the same stats but has an OS where there is no apps for it. Samsung is creating competition to their own phone! Come on, Drop Bada, move to only android and add your touchwiz mods if you like but don`t try to fragment the market even more. There are enough smartphone OS out there already...

Unfortunately big file for only choppy videos. But i guess reducing video resolution in WVGA will be perfect.
My Pixon 8Mpx makes better video and is louder too. Maybe will choose Nokia N8 after all....
