Samsung S8500 Wave review: Hello, world!

01 June 2010
Smartphone for the masses or feature phone of the future? Samsung would gladly have it either way. The question rather is, will the Bada OS keep up the pace of its debut device. We’ve been following the new smart platform since its first. Update: Samsung Dive overview added...

Great device, but still with some problems (taken from various other reviews):

- Social hub with very few protocols (no ICQ, Jabber, etc...)

- If e.g. the browser needs RAM, widgets will be closed - and not automatically restartet. So you may end up with empty home screens after a web session.

- Widgets are really (unnecessarily) big, so its usually not possible to have more than one on a single home screen.

Are theses issues fixed in the final retail version?

hurr, 02 Jun 2010What's a platform? What's an OS?Wave runs the same TouchWiz that was running on .. say Jet or something. The only difference is that being based on Bada platform is that it has native Apps and SDK to develop on, not just Java.

So sad that nearly all newly released Samsung handsets don't support iSync... (I'm a Mac user)
I always want to buy a Samsung mobile phone but this prohibits me from buying one.

bummy, 02 Jun 2010Why in the world would anybody buy this phone? Best of t... moreI dont understand your comment as tis phone is very cheap when comparing it to other phones with the same stats, also samsung has spent alot of money on this phone/os so they aint just gonna let it die app wise. And even if they dont bring out any app's for this phone other then the ones it already has its still a great phone that will do everything most people want, and lasty ther has been huge uptake by developers of this phone the only reason for low numbers now is due to samsung working out the purchase mec in their website they only have the free apps available, some of the youtube videos of ubisoft games has been amazing!!!

Why in the world would anybody buy this phone?

Best of the pack right now is obviously Android, Apple, Blackberry... Phones these days really boils down to Hardware vs OS

If you want to be "different", then why buy into something that copies the iphone interface. Hardware is nothing to be impressed with (Samsung offers other AMOLED screen phones) ... OS is experimental, buy something that will continue to grow for better investment like Android.

This is nothing more than an expensive feature phone. Buyers will be disappointed half a year later, wondering why they didn't spend that lump of money in a better phone.

Forgot to mention that I personally don't give a *** for 99% of all apps there is, only few are great and useful. I rather keep internal memory half used! Wave, unfortunately has a very small one. 8GB would fit well.
                          What I care for is:
Portability, Telephony, Audio/Video quality, decent SAT-NAV, WiFi, best screen, and yes - now also a camera! FM transmitter would be big a plus!
The rest is crap - such as games is for kids, is it not!?
BADA, will it live or not - tell me who cares if in two years this phone will be outdated and retired.
This will be my first Samsung, first touch phone and first phone that I'll buy biggest SDHC available!
btw: currently I am still using elderly Nokia 6500c

Thanks for this review, well done guys!
However I do have some important questions:
                              a) How does Wave "behave" when there is an incoming call while on GPS?
                              b) Does it really support 32GB microSDHC? You tested 16GB only...
                              c) Charging time on socket and USB (laptop).
                              d) Any news on firmware updates coming?
                              e) Full system and data BackUps to/from Windows 7 - how does it work?

After a long wait, now, any day soon I will receive this device :)

Once again, thanks and your or readers reply will be greatly appreciated!

Very good review, gSMarena. I agree with everything said. Bada will need loads of Dev's to take it to the sky. I think that they will do this as the SDK release has been good and prizes and competetions will help fuel it.

HB, 02 Jun 2010simply beautiful.. and well im sure people can live without... moreI agree with that. Bada is a new OS and you can't expect many applications though. Better than 200,000 apps and 99.99% rubbish with ads.

When Android first came out, it doesn't even have bluetooth on it. And iPhone OS?, even worse (still missing lots of features). Bada first born is a lot more better. Things will be improved with time.

Samsung would know, if Wave only has latest Android OS, it might sell 10 times more Wave but Sammy sticks with Bada.

But what is most important? Fast, smart enough, great specs, best audio and video, and big battery.

i think heavy costumized android 1.6 and tons of apps available at marketplace is BETTER than 60 apps and NOT promising os. come on see samsung cant fullfill the min 100 apps at its lunch how comes gsmarena says its promising LOL... So the os in x10 isnt the letdown compared with wave os.
However wave is a good handset at this price range.

simply beautiful.. and well im sure people can live without apps if the quality of the phone(built, audio, video etc.) is as excellent as they say it is.
