Well done GSMArena Staff, I really liked the article.
Too many statistics though, and you should have added the milestones.
Important & Legendary phones like the N-91, N-95, etc. almost changed the market when they released. So, they were like milestones.
Also, there were preferred mobile series too, like N-Series, E-Series from Nokia and K-Series, W-Series, from Sony Ericcson, etc...
While someone was hooked on to N-Series for their every phone, others had more intrest in W-Series, for example.
All this should have been given. But otherwise, I loved your efforts while going through the article... A good initiative taken and well formed article.

Someone, 16 Jul 2010And even with the Japanese companies and all their high tec... moreI know that the Iphone is popular in Japan. Japan is NOT focusing so much on the smart phone segment. They like to produce phones with AWESOME cameras, with awesome screens, they like to produce many waterproof phones, they like to make very big screen phones now(visit NttDocomo's Japanese site in english and see them).

Egyptien Boy , 15 Jul 2010no, I don`t agree with you installing 13.2 camera in a mob... moreI don't agree with you too. Japan is the BEST in terms of Megapixel, in terms of screen, in terms at making waterproof phones with IPX7, IPX 8 capabilities! Japan is advanced enough at making waterproof fingerprint sensor phones. I "check" their technology, I have some experience. I follow and I like them since 2006. :D

Great article GSM arena, 5 stars for your staff that made it possible. I have lived most of the history of mobile phones and I remember when my dad got his first phone, a Nokia 5110, I remember how it refused to get a phone and he was late, 43 years old when he got his Nokia, now he has a 5530 Xpress Music while I refuse to get a touchscreen. I have always had candy bar phones just the first one was a Samsung with flip keypad, from then all were candybars, a Motorola C202, then a Pantech C310 (kept it for 3 weeks, boring but my frist mobile with color screen), Siemens C65 (my first camera phone), Nokia 6230 (my all time favorite, it just had it all even an mp3 player and memory card slot, uncommon back then), a Nokia 6682 (my first Smartphone, a hell of a phone by the way) and since 2008 I have a 5700 XpressMusic, which I plan to retire soon, now I want some Wi-Fi enabled device on the 200-250 U$ range.

it brought me nostalgia reading this muchly appreciated article. it didnt mention ericsson r380 being the grand daddy of smartphones and touchscreen; way before the legendary se Pxx series.

omg what i remembered... i was about 14 years old when in 2002 my first mobile phone was brought at home. i will never forget the wonder and eye popping astonishment i felt when my 7650 turned on (really). it was the first time to see such a small color screen and a digital camera and a telephone (!!!) all together. that is why i love nokia since then. when another phone will make me feel like this again? make something great please.
btw great review

MOBILE PHONES AFTER 20–30 YEARS:
1.) Record super hi vision-33 megapixels video
2.) Playback via the built proektor33 megapixel video
3.) Photos 50 - 120 megapixels
4.) Multicore processor 20 – 50 cores
5.) Memory card to terabytes, and later in petabytes
6.) Image and the keyboard will be projected into the air
7.) Technology generation and conservation of energy - a few months or years of the phone without recharging
8.) Navigation with projected video images of cities in real time
9.) Teraflops processor
10.) Data transfer rate - a few terabits per second
AFTER 40–50 YEARS:
1.) Holographic mobile phones
2.) 3d holographic projection games, operating system, browser, photos, videos and more…
3.) Video conferencing (social networks and more) in real time and the natural 3d resolution - human eye is unable to distinguish projection from a real person
4.) petaflops processors

ok so we've had "the shedding of antennas", camera modules, vibrators, infra red, bluetooth, wifi, accelerometer, colour screens, touch screens, proximity sensors, qwerty keyboards and gyroscopes.
Can anyone guess the next best feature to be introduced, hardware wise?
looking forward to ideas :-)

Very good review. You caught the essence of mobile phone evolution. And you made me remember all those great phones back in the days that i`ve owned: v80, 8210, k750, 3310, d500, sl55, x480 and many more.

Mobilemaster, 15 Jul 2010Well... We know that the Japanese phones are the most advan... moreno, I don`t agree with you
installing 13.2 camera in a mobile phone is not an invention or progress
it makes the phone heavy, large and pricey
- 5 or 8 megapixel camera phones serve the everyday photographing purpose nicely (if you're a professional photographer, you should buy a separate professional digital camera instead of a phone )
actually, I belive the most advanced country in technology is the united states
Technology lies in the processors and GPU processor (american Qualcomm, for example dominate the vast majority of touch screen smart phones and have reached 1.5 ghz processors and dual core mobile processors) operating systems like Windows mobile,Andreod, Palm, Blackberry, and iPhone OS are designed in the US
satellites GPS (Gps one), screens, Wi-Fi(qualcom, Marvell texas instruments) and Bluetooth(Broadcom)
all these technologies sourced from the US
