BlackBerry Torch 9800 review: Living the Olympic creed

24 September 2010
The BlackBerry Torch is not the first phone to give you both a full hardware QWERTY keyboard and an ample touchscreen in a smartphone setting. But it’s a debut for BlackBerry and one that will probably shape the future for the next generation of RIM phones...

i like this phone to look at.its a blackberry worth having. until you start using it. i found it to be slow sluggish. nice screen but just not very responsive. the slide idea is pointless. i liked the the storm. as a device. its good. but very heavy.

only time will tell. but the old curve still is the most popular b/berry. so the choice is yours.

i have in the past few days had this phone and having had the storm 1 and storm 2 this is massive improvement its navigation and multi tasking are brilliant rim appear to be finaly taking on board what the users have been asking for far better than storm 1 and storm 2 i would recommend this phone to anyone well done rim look foreward to your next new handsets.

I am not 100% sure your conclusion is correct regarding RIM's goal to go maintream. I think they may create devices that appeal to that market, but they will never stray from their business minded, security conscious ethos.

Hi all, BB users, and haters :) I just purchased torch. It's been so great! Perfect! People are staring at me as if I were a celebrity when I'm holding it.:) BB users in here (Indonesia) are more than just a lot! Anyway, I've gotta question that u probably can answer, why can't I edit my profile (sounds and notification)? When I tried to edit, it didn't work. It felt like it wanted to open, but failed and failed and failed again. So I can only use ringtone and notification sound as the torch is set. I hope my "perfect" word for torch will be lasting long time. Looking forward to having answer from u friends(BB lovers)

BlackBerry is BlackBerry at the end of the day. It’s no iPhone killer we all know what it does and meant to do. Reading reviews are one thing, experiencing it is something else.
I recently got the BBTorch 9800 and think it’s a great device. It’s a big step up from previous models.
Browser is very fast, pinch to zoom is smooth enough.
Loudspeaker is LOUD (GSMArena must have had a faulty device, perhaps they need to review the device again).
                                    The Torch is NOT slow.
                                    BATTERY LIFE IS GREAT!
                                    Sync music from iTunes.
Normal capacitive touch screen (for those who don’t understand or confused, its NOT click touch screen).

However if slide out QWERTY + touch screen isn’t your thing, then the next best thing is the Bold 9700. Soon OS6 will be available for that.

Reading as many views as possible the consensus seems to be that this is modest mid-range phone, with short-comings. RIM promised much more. With leaks of the Storm surfacing it seems reasonable to expect that the Torch is only designed to be their mid-ranger, and the Storm 3 (which given the previous disasters at least needs a new name, otherwise it hampers itself from the start) is going to be the product that delivers. Seems to me that if it fails RIM will be in big trouble.
