Nokia N8 review: Director of photography

12 October 2010
We’ve come to take Nokia for granted in the low end or the business class but it seems it has lost the knack for killer phones, run out of royal blood. It’s up to the Nseries to fix it all up. The Nokia N8 may just turn out to be the right cure. With that kind of hardware. Update, 08.02.2012: Symbian Belle update hands-on...

I'm with Clint on this purely on the basis that he can construct a sentence using grammatically correct English. Why do all the fantards use txt speak?

I'll stick with my 3GS. There still isn't a phone out there that makes me want to upgrade.

The Galaxy S still looks like the best smartphone out there.

Doc, your arguments are becoming tiresome now and I have better things to do on a Friday night.

Three things I feel the need to mention first though.

Firstly, this is a Nokia N8 thread so it should go without saying that you are bound to bump into the odd Nokia or Symbian fan here. It is a bit like going to a Metallica concert and moaning about all the metal heads present. Not sure what the Justin Beiber fans are doing here though.

Secondly, I have repeatedly stated that I do not yet own the N8 so I am here reading up about the phone while deciding if it is the phone for me. I am not trying to convince myself that I made the right purchase. The same cannot be said for the iPhone and Samsung owners in this thread.

Thirdly, and related to the second point, I am unable to provide you with direct comparisons of the apps available on Symbian^3 as it has just been released and I do not have the phone yet. Honestly if the difference all boils down to flashiness then it is really neither here nor there for me. You may feel it is a necessity but I would rather have added functionality (USB on the go, HDMI, output, FM transmitter etc etc etc). This is an area I am not a huge expert on but Nokia is now encouraging development on the QT platform which by all accounts makes developing for a large array of phones much simpler. The future may not be all doom and gloom for the N8 as you are insinuating.

          Have a wonderful evening.

Clint, 15 Oct 2010Do any of those many friends of yours have Symbian^3 phones... moreOk dude , keep doing this " Nokia can do what other iOS and Androids can Do " Song .
And for ur info , Presenting something elegantly like Pulse or Awesome Notes does and reading plain thing means alot to people and users . U call it Flashy , But for us its an experience . Having pics videos along with the topic and seemless fluidity is 1000 % superior to ur so called Non Flashy argument .
And about ur comparisons , Lol ,, just would say that wait for Hi profile websites comparing ur Nokia vs iOS and Androids . Cuz 1 person may be wrong , not the majority .
And from Functionality and Flashiness check this every 1 and compare it anything on Nokia and Clint comments

                http://bridworks.com/anote/en/main/index.php

this is called Awesome notes utilizing Elegant iOS API and the fluidity of it . I would request " MY ULTRA NOKIA LOVER FRIEND CLINT " to present something on Nokia that Beats it . Just a very Minor example of Functionality on iOS and Android 2.2 Just so so so superior to Nokia and its OS .
I want Nokia to change for Good , but if it cant and continue to bring down graded product into the market , then what can we say except feeling sorry for it !!

I have done numerous comparisons between my old S60V3 device and newer Blackberries and iPhones. Usually this is after one of the owners of these phones insists on showing me this exceptional "new" feature on their phone. I then feel obligated to show them the same feature on my phone. Of course theirs may be pretty and more flash but again, for me, it boils down to having the functionality rather than how pretty it looks in doing what you want.

Let's not even bother factoring price of the phone into this discussion....

And I always find it interesting how people feel it will add more weight to their argument if they start of by expressing their previous undying love for Symbian ha ha

For a change , NOKIA lovers , lemme tell u this , that i was a Die hard symbian fan . But now , NO MORE .

Lemme be logical here . Take latest Nokia cell of one of ur friend in ur 1 hand and take iPhone 4 or Any Android 2.2 ( Galaxy S or Droid X ) in other hand and then compare it . You will get to know . U would't even wanna hang out with NOKIA any more as its STONE AGE STUFF compared to the other two . Just compare urself as NOKIA people who praise NOKIA never ever had an iPhone 4 or Android experience !!

I thought it would not be necessary to state that I was referring to the importance of the durability of a phone rather than a comparison of screen sizes. I'll remember in future to underestimate the intelligence of those I am chatting to.

Let's chat about phones with similar screen sizes then shall we? By all accounts the N8 is extremely hard wearing a durable. I have not owned one for two years so I can't comment with 100% accuracy but I would assume that the aluminium cover and plastic end pieces would mean it is far less likely that a drop will result in a smashed screen.

of course it takes hits better, i know many who also dropped iphone and it didn't broke it's all about how it hit the floor or ground.

of course if the whole phone is display it has a lot potential to crash compared to little screened phone.

Oh, and by the way, from my quick introduction to it, Pulse does not really impress me that much. It merely provides content you can get on any other phone in a glossier and prettier format. I'm sorry but glossy and pretty are far less important to me than actually just getting the news and information I seek.

The only purpose of glossy and pretty is to show off to your peers.... which does after all appear to be the main purpose of an iPhone.

Ha ha ha. So you have never dropped a phone. It has never fallen out of your pocket while pulling out your keys or wallet? It has not slipped out of your hands when carrying groceries, work files, keys etc etc? It has not been bumped off the table when out with mates?

Yip, I can see now how our phone needs differ substantially. As you would have noted if you read earlier, my friend was not playing cricket with their iPhone. They accidentally dropped it and it smashed. Absolutely ridiculous! I have dropped my N82, or it has fallen on the floor, many many times and the worst it has is a large scratch on the one corner. No doubt if that was an iPhone it would have been fatal. Sorry but that is pathetic!

Bottom line is that, besides a few of us who study the ins and outs of any phone we consider, most people have no idea about the processor or RAM in their phone. Further to this even if they did they would probably have no idea whether 680Mhz is good or not.

Of course it does allow a salesman looking for a sale the opportunity to merely rattle off these numbers and fool the ill-informed into thinking that one phone is far superior to another based just on these numbers alone. In fact we seem to have quite a few of those types on here.

You clearly missed my post a little later as we cannot say the same for the iPhone's build durability.

And I am not even going to bother commenting on the reference to it being the best in the business when it comes to the camera.

None of those things you mentioned there give me any proof as to why you feel Nokia is on their knees. We clearly have different needs when it comes to a phone so clearly you cannot speak for everyone.

"And i Like Android cuz of The Amazing customization , hacking , increasing developer data Base , amazing google services and a very very Good Support all over ."
