Nokia C7 review: Rise and shine

03 November 2010
The Nokia C7 has no intention of breaking the chain of command. It is just a slimmer, simpler and more affordable N8 and comes with more conservative styling. The well-balanced Cseries have received an accomplished leader. The specs sound cool...

Sails, 05 Nov 2010It is so funny how people try to troll about the interface.... moreHeu...if you try an Iphone, Android, Win7, and then a Symbian3, the only comment you have in mind for this one is: wahou, they were producing oddly phones 10 years ago.

The high speed capabilities that people keep wanting is what has killed the netbook format. We now see Droid 2 global with 1.2 GHz cpu where are we going with smartphones like this. No wonder the batteries are suffering.

So I think the C7/N8 duo is what people like me want out of a phone even though I'll probably go for E7 for the hardware keyboard.Mobile OSes that require high cpu speeds show how the idea of optimum programming has been lost.

I am an N97 owner user. It came with a Quickoffice viewing no editing capability but Nokia has since put the full Quickoffice premium on Ovi store for free download also applies to C7. So the pay-for the full office thing no longer holds.

Yes the keyboard takes you to a separate window but lets also mention that Nokia has made swype keyboard available for Symbian^1 and Symbian^3. For ^1 it is not on Ovi store yet but you can download it free from Nokia labs.

I think the symbian UI has been overly criticized without thinking about people's preferences. For example for me, I do not like the flat menu setup as I have kids and do not want them to get to the depths of my phone just by swiping a finger. Also I hate not having a home screen like in the fruity one as I do not want my phone to look like I'm always staring at explorer.

Back N97 in particular, it is a capable phone that is let down by small RAM but it still well works great for me as I never see a need to have a lot of application open. Some of us do not expect the gaming desktop capabilities out of a smart-phone.

uk27, 05 Nov 2010TSH, Thank you for the reply. I am not skeptical at all.... moreI agree that optical zoom really helps with framing subjects, and that P&S digicams (almost) invariably have a better control scheme - if only because all their buttons are dedicated to camera functions! :--]

On the subject of zoom, you can crop after the fact to get a similar effect. With 12MP to play with you will maintain plenty of detail down to an effective ~2x zoom. Not ideal, I know, but still ... at least we agree that it's better to get the shot, no matter how, than to miss it entirely :--D

As for playing files by folder: the only devices I have a clear recollection of doing that were the iRiver MP3 players. Maybe they still do, I don't know ... but I don't think any phones do this at all. Would be good to be able to do this, as it would make custom playlists pretty easy with simple Explorer drag'n'drop. This isn't really a priority for me as I'm a Winamp user. I would create a new playlist, add the songs I want from the Winamp library (heaps faster and easier than the poxy iTunes one!) and drag the playlist into my N97 Mini (Winamp automatically detects it as a portable media device). But if you prefer to use Explorer by itself to manage your music collection it looks like you're out of luck :--/

It is so funny how people try to troll about the interface. All you need to do is consider that the interface is supposedlt the worst part of the phone then go into a store and try it yourself.

I bet after that most people end up walking out with a new Symbian device ;)

Thank you for the reply. I am not skeptical at all. I totally agree that we take more photos if there is a camera with us all the time, instead of carrying too many gadgets unnecessarily. Camera phones fill that requirement nicely. I hope they will replace 90% of Digicams in the future. But aren't they a little behind as far as settings and ease of use is concerned?. Is there an optical zoom? I saw the photos in the link. Image quality is excellent. but it is a wide shot. Are the cropped photos of digital zoom? I am not complaining but zooming (at least 3x) is a must for good framing of objects. I think digital zoom will not be equal to optical z. I haven't seen an N8 yet. Another great drawback of these phones is this, which I have already mentioned in N8 forum. No phone (with touch) can play/view music or photos folder-wise. It is a big drawback. I am frustrated with this. If there is any phone-any brand- with at least 3" display, 16M colors and touch, which can do folder-wise, let me know.

uk27, 04 Nov 2010What I mean is Camera phones cannot replace dedicated camer... moreI respect your opinion, and I was skeptical too until I saw the below page. The evidence is irrefutable: this phone actually *does* replace a dedicated digicam for the kind of shooting we're talking about (which is to say, carrying with you when you go out socially or just around town).

                http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php?topic=31278.0

I'll be the first to defend digicams for particular shooting requirements - for instance, I recently needed to do some 15, 5 and 1.6 second exposures with particular white balance settings, on a tripod. Not something easily done with N8! :--]. But what we're talking about here is whether or not the N8 makes carrying around a P&S for quick off-the-cuff social or interest photos redundant - and the link above shows that it does.

                I hope you agree! :--D

This is the best phone ever! No Sony Ericsson, no HTC, no one can build this nice of a phone! It's even better looking than the iphone! I've held it and it's just great! Good to hold in the hand, very responsive, very beautiful phone indeed. Symbian will need to get better and it will hearing Nokia's CEO opting for a continuous improvement of Symbian^3. This phone is a steal considering that you're getting one of the best navigation programs for free worldwide, have all those features, sd card, three home screens, etc. Seriously, if you set up your three homescreens with all the shortcuts you would never have the need to get deeper into the OS.

This have far greater value then for what it's selling.

TSH, 04 Nov 2010Struggling with this myself, actually. Sure, I own a goo... moreDedicated cameras (P&S included) are way better than mobile phone cameras. If you can carry them, it is worth it. There is no comparison. Camera settings are also poor compared to dedicated cameras. For example, I read that N8 doesn't have ISO value selection , instead it has low, medium, high setting. I think there is no optical zoom/anti-shake in N8.

Lol with just 256 mb ram you can expect a slow phone with no eyecandy and on top of it a weak battery. Good luck to the potential buyers!
